Ezequiel Garay

If Vidic leaves I think it would make sense to add another experienced defender. De Gea, Jones and Smalling are all pretty young, Rafael as well, Evans has got to the place where he can be a regular but he's not quite a leader yet and so it really just leaves Rio who by the sounds of it, is having to do a lot to manage his back. I think we'd need some extra experience particularly in europe. If smalling gets over his injuries it may well be that in a few years we become overstocked there, but for the next couple of seasons I think it would make sense.

This thread is hilarious.

Every two weeks this thread gets bumped by some report by Portuguese newspaper/journalist saying we've signed him/have an agreement with him and the discussion about central defenders gets repeated and the usual moans about not us signing a midfielder. We've signed him for 10 times in the last two months according to Portuguese reports.

Why would our best CB leave, and if he did, why would we replace him with someone who is around the same level as our up and coming English CBs that we spent a chunk of money to secure a couple of seasons ago?

If Vidic were to leave we'd either go for the top CBs or we'd go for another long term prospect and bump Evans, Smalling and Jones up the pecking order.

That's good, I don't have to think positive thoughts about him then.
In that case, if we have to get an experienced Real Madrid centre back in for some reason, I'd prefer Pepe.

So true.

Even more of a pointless signing than Young

Have a feeling the news of his signing will be unleashed tomorrow to counter Bayern's Thiago signing and soften the blow.

How exactly does signing Garay soften the blow? It will infuriate me even more.

This is obviously a Fergie signing...can Moyes cancel it at this late stage?

Knowing our luck with Center backs Carrick will still end up playing there against swansea

Worth remembering Rafael is our only real specialist right back, so Smalling and Jones will have to fill in there occasionally. And with our record of injuries, it's almost guaranteed either Vidic or Rio will be out for a while next season. It's also possible this might be Rio's last season with us as a first choice center back.

Signing an aggressive, experienced defender who is strong in the air won't be the worst thing in the world. I don't think our younger defenders are ready to make the step up just yet. You could see the difference Vidic's absence made to us as a team last season.

Fabio is more than capable of covering his brother. If that wasnt the case, it must have been senile for Sir Alex to start him there in the champions league final

Varela? And Fabio is more than competent there, better than Jones and Smalling

We also have Jones as one of those CBs and he's arguably the best crosser. More than good enough to get games at RB

What's the bets that if we get him, not one of our defenders will get injured next season...which would be good of course, but would leave a couple of lads unhappy with lack of games.

Moyes was later quoted in saying "Garay? Because he's the hero Manchester deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll sign him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A top red."

Serious question for those who've watched him: has/can he play in midfield?

Doesn't it say something that Madrid never wanted him back? Even though it looks like they get about half of his fee so he'd cost them a lot less and their defence is far weaker than ours?

Madrid sold him for 5million and now we are getting him for nearly 20 mill, and Real get half that fee

Sounds like a good deal.....for Madrid :(
