Ezequiel Garay

I do think Portuguese football newspapers don't do anything but push the agendas of the clubs. And they're dedicated football papers (3 daily ones), unlike yours there.

Even at Benfica forum they seem to think this is extremely unlikely, given your other options. But Benfica, like Porto, needs to sell every season nowadays. If he doesn't go to United he'll likely go to the likes of Russia or whatever.

"Garay at United worries Vidic"

"The announcement of Garay's signing by MU is imminent and Brittish press relates that Vidic is extremely worried about it. He will talk to Moyes to know what the manager's plans are and might ask for a transfer if he thinks he won't play regularly."

This from Record, Portuguese football newspaper. I translated.

Sports journalism is so cheap. Their only reference is the "Brittish press" but after googling I didn't see any other source talking about this other than a shady website I never heard about. That said they're still adamant he's going there, and remind us of that every two days.

I wouldnt worry about Vida freakin out man. He'll understand his worth at the club - sure he's Captain for Gods sake. He'll also understand that he's had injury problems for the past few seasons & has missed nearly a season & a half in that time, so he'll most likely welcome the club covering their bases in case he breaks down again.

I like Garay & this is definitely a Fergie target. Fergie's been chasing him since before he went to Real (many moons ago), so he see's a player in him. Fergie rarely gets it wrong with defenders to be honest & Garay had a pretty good season last time. Of course there are probably better players out there, but who knows how good he can be at United?! Going to a club of our stature, could increase his performance levels by 10/20% & even at that - he's rated very highly by all accounts. He's a good age aswell - 26 i think, so he's served his apprenticeship & United wont faze him in my opinion. Just hope we have better luck with another Argentine & he doesnt try to feck us over like Teveth & that son bitch Heinze!

The bigger & better the squad - the more options we have for continued success

With Garay following a MUFC page over the past few months, I think this'll happen.

I'd say Ferdinand will be the one seeing less game time rather than Vidic.

I say that looking at the reports in recent months, if we had wanted this to happen, it would have happened by now.

I've gone back and forth on whether a CB really is needed. The only way picking up Garay makes any sense to me is if we're committed to making Jones a defensive midfielder and/or Vidic will be sold soon. Whatever happens, we have trust the club knows what it's doing.

That Vidic is worried about any defender in the world joining is just stupid. He is probably the best Central defender in the world and our captain, every other defender should be worried, not him.

In addition his caracter is so strong that he would rise to the challange and be even better because of it (Like Evra).

Didn't want to create a separate thread as there is a mention of Ezequiel Garay and it's not the most reliable source, but we have apparently "registered our interest" in Davide Astori of Cagliari according to The Express.

There was a mention of our interest in the Italian papers yesterday, as reported on Football Italia.

There are youtube videos of Garay:

With Ferdinand turning 35, Vidic's two years of injury problems (and today we read he's pulled out of the first leg of the tour with sciatica) I'm not sure how anyone can question the logic of us being in for another CD.

I'm big fans of Evans, Smalling and Jones but am I comfortable with them taking what is likely to be a significant strain of the season? Not really, no. Not yet anyway. Maybe in a couple of years but I doubt we can patch up Vidic and keep Rio able to play 30+ games a season for that length of time.

So you already have 5 CB's competing for two spots and you want to bring in one more? Even if either Smalling or Jones play RB thats still 4 CB's for 2 spots. Also Rio was struggling with injuries two seasons ago but didnt we patch him up and keep him injury free these past 18-24 months? Vidic is younger and as a result will be okay even though their injuries are not the same.

One is quite old and game time will be limited. One has had horrific injury problems and they look like they're continuing and two are very inexperienced.

So we ignore Ferdinand's age, Vidic's injury concerns, Smalling and Jones' in experience just say 'We've got 5, we're fine' ?

Between Anderson, Carrick, Giggs, Fletcher and Cleverley we've got five CMs. But I'm sure you wouldn't say we don't need anyone purely on the basis of having 5 already?

Silly comparison.

How the feck will Smalling and Jones get experience if they don't play? And it's not Garay is actually better than them either

I think you can argue the logic of this on the basis that we already have 5 CBs competing for 2 spaces:

Rio
Vidic
Smalling
Evans
Jones

To then add a 6th top class CB is over egging the pudding. If Rio, Smalling and Vidic are not fit we still have Jones and Evans and reserve team back up for the tour in the shape of Wooton and Keane. We would then expect to be able to get one of our first team CB fit by the start of the season or have Either Wooton or Keane as emergency back up. Just think of the competition in CB if we have 6 CB competing for two spots and everyone is fit, it would be ridiculous.

CB is a position we would prefer not to do too much rotating in as well and we already have Carrick for extreme cases (I personally never want to see him there for as long as I live but for extreme circumstances he is still an option).

It would be a silly scenario if we have to rotate in this position just to allow our 6 top class CB to get games, we should be focusing on other areas.

I'm not sure about Wooton, I reckon he will be a Premier League defender but not United quality but Keane does look like a great prospect who could perhaps make the jump this season.

Okay first of all midfield and defense is totally different for us. We have a much better defensive lineup than we do in midfield. Smalling, Jones and Evans are still young and learning. There is no use if we invested all this time, effort and money in them and we dont give them enough playing time to grow. Vidic and Rio are not under the knife and are not going to miss months of game time. We can still play Fabio and Rafael at RB and Evra and Buttner at LB. So we dont need to worry about the FB situation.

And regarding your midfield analogy, Fletcher might not even play again. Giggs is dreadful in midfield. None of our defenders are neither dreadful nor are in danger of ever playing again. So three central midfielders for two spots? Obviously we need a replacement.

I have my doubts about Wooton as well but he's perfectly fine emergency backup at this point and should hopefully continue to develop.

Our five midfielders are not that good, in fact only two of them are reliable options.

On the other side, Rio was one of the best CB in England last season, while Vidic after his return was ridiculously good. Evans has shown in his last 2 seasons that is a very good player and very reliable. Both Smalling and Jones have potential, and in 2010-2011 Smalling was a great player for us. They don't have enough experience, but the only way to get experience is actually by playing. How they are going to get experience and become good if their limited playing time will get even more limited? Also, Garay hasn't shown to be that much better than them, in fact I don't think that he is better at all than Smalling in his debut season. As I said before, this looks to me a pointless and potentially a harmful signing. I hope there isn't any truth on it. If Vidic is going to leave then ok (though I would have preferred someone better, like Hummels for example) but I cannot see a reason why Vidic is going to leave.

You lot are mental. Comparing the situation in our defence with our midfield options? It's like comparing Buckingham Palace to Bebe's cardboard box.

La Nación journo says we've reached an agreement with Benfica for Garay.

The only surprise is that the tweet isnt from 6 months ago or something when we were first said to have reached an agreement. We've signed him 7 times since

We have Vidic, Evans, Jones, Smalling and Rio..
Rio will last a couple of seasons.. is there really a need for another central defender?

We've also got Michael Keane and Tom Thorpe coming through. Baffling decision to spend so much on another defender, unless someone is leaving. We're going to end up with Jones as a permanent midfielder at this rate, and it's not his best position:(
