Evra extends contract

I'm happy that Evra's signed on. With Ferdinand and Vidic leaving, this leaves us with little experience in central defence. With Giggs also gone, we have no leaders in the dressing room other than Evra.

I don't think Evra extending his contract will result in the new full back getting less playing time. van Gaal will always pick the best for his team, and if it means Evra will get little playing time, then so be it.

The big thing about this is that we have someone who can actually be a capable backup player unlike Buttner. Also, when given a good amount of rest, Evra is still a good full back who can defend as well as attack. We were screaming for someone to come in and play regularly so that Evra can have a rest. Evra's still a good option for high-pressure matches, and a fresh Evra is always a good option to have.

That's ridiculous, why would Shaw want to do that knowing he could probably start at Chelsea or another club if he accepts them? Same goes for Evra in relation to other clubs. I don't see why either of them would be okay with "sharing", one will have to accept he's the starter and will probably not play except in minor cup games or injuries.
Shaw is 18 and his experience amounts to Southampton. Evra is 33 and isn't going to play every game. It patently isn't "ridiculous."

Delighted with this news. Really did not expect him to be happy to stay playing second fiddle to Shaw... Assuming that will be the case. Not got the number of fixtures to keep both playing as regularly as they like so it'll surely be Evra who's going to be losing out.

If he's prepared to do this for the love of the club, then my love of him is reaching new heights!

Um yes it does. You have to convince the player to stay and only then can the extension deal be activated.

You dont have to convince anything. The offer was always on the table, it had to be per the terms of Evra's clause, whether United wanted to or not. Sure in the end we might have said we would be happy to have him stay a year, but that changes nothing on the transfer front. We still need cover there.

If anything it would be a good thing. Get in Shaw or some other leftback target. He has a year of guidance under Evra.

He's not, Berbatov could have left on a free but we activated the 1 year extension clause in March, even though we still planned to move him on in the coming window, it was so we didn't miss out on a fee.
It's reported Van Gaal wanted him to stay and Evra has said he wanted to stay. There is no indication the extension clause was triggered off with a view to sell him. Evra would not have signed if he wants to go. Berba's case was not the same

Pogba's experience, to bring that nonsense up again amounted to Manchester United reserves, yet he has made the step up to being a first teamer for a big club. Shaw has had way more experience, so expecting him to be satisfied to sharing time with Evra when he knows he's better is a bit ridiculous. And the same applies to Evra too. So, who's going to be the first teamer in your scenario and why should whoever that person is be satisfied with being second string? Or do both play one game on, one game off?

In which case, he won't sign and there won't be a problem.

And the same applies to Evra too.

Again, he won't extend if this is the scenario. Only he has, so we will have to see if Shaw signs.

There will be no "first choice" The position will be shared. Horses for courses, if you like. And Shaw gets a season of learning from a veteran.

Really good news that. He may have become a liability over the past three years or so and the main defensive weak-link - midfield aside - of our first team, but in a squad capacity he is far better equipped than Buttner for that role and he would also provide the ideal deputy for a young, promising fullback - providing we sign Shaw - given his vast experience in the role and quality he's shown throughout his United tenure.

You also have to take into consideration the effect there could be on the team if we completely dismembered the old guard within one season. Ferdinand had to go due to the season he has endured and the lack of professionalism on his part, but one of Evra and Vidic are capable of playing on one more season in some capacity. As it is, the latters future was the first to be decided, so it became vital Evra stayed.

I'm sure he will hugely benefit from the far lessened workload he will have when we sign Shaw. Buttner is just a poor, converted winger and hopefully Paddy's extension means Buttner's future is also settled.

Great news. I think he will have a better season now that he will hopefully have some help.

Winning is in Evra's DNA. I knew he would never leave the club on such a low. He would want to leave Utd as a Champion.

Great news. Obviously, we still need a quality left back, but Evra being one of two for that position is great news. At his best, he was arguably the best fullback I've seen (but it was for too short a time period to label him better overall than Cole or Irwin, his top level though...). He's lost a bit of pace, but he is still faster than most. At times this season, and last, he's looked a little tired, but he's not been poor this season as some would have it. Overall, he's played slightly better than the average of the team, imo.

He and Shaw would make a perfect LB-pairing for me, but Coentrao would also be sweet.

Great news, now to get in a long term left back to phase in over the length of the season.

Important to keep an experienced head while we lose such experience around the team. I think it's a sign that they know the Shaw deal will be tough though. Great to keep Evra but there is still a serious need to improve at LB.

It makes sense to keep him & sell Butner. If Shaw were to sign it's nice to have cover with his kind of experience. Plus he can pass on some of that experience to Shaw & help improve his game.

If we still bring in Shaw this will be great news.
If renewing Evra's contract makes us give up on signing Shaw, then it won't be so welcome.
If Shaw doesn't want to join us or Southampton don't want to sell, then good news.

What I'm trying to say is, Evra signing an extension can only really be judged with our transfer activity. Still, I'm glad he's still around as he's one of my favourite United players. Possibly ever.

Thrilled with this news. He's still got plenty to offer, he just needs to be rotated more and not expected to play 90mins week in week out.

More than the footballing aspect, it's the character and the presence of Evra that's great to have. A guy who really embodies Man Utd.

Indeed. You should see some of the comments in the Newb equivelent thread. Some are fecking disgusting and having a go at Evra for potentially scuppering the deal with Shaw like he's some piece of shit that you can just discard rather than a player that loves the club and has given us absolutely everything he's had for the last 7 (?) years.

Great news because I love and respect the guy as a footballer. Not that great news as I think his game is a complete liability at fullback and he is one of the first players that needs replacing.

The newbies are mostly retards and I'm glad I'm not a scout anymore  Evra extending his contract has nothing to do with Shaw, it's Shaw who will ultimately decides if he wants to join us or not.

He's still a quality player, he just needs to be used correctly. You can't expect a player of his age to play 90mins week in week out, get up and down the pitch as much as he does, and still be mentally switched on at all times to defend correctly.

Yeah, I know.. Hence the 'complete liability and first player that needs replacing' bit.

Yes but he wouldn't be a "complete liability" if he wasn't expected to play week in week out. We need a LB to provide competitin for Evra, not necessarily to replace him. But obviously any player brought it in would be with a view to replaceing him long term.

The experience thing is completely overplayed. Last season with all the title winning experience on the squad we finished 7th this season so I am not to chuffed by losing some experience heads. I know he loves the club and gives his all that but, that does not change the fact that he was horrible last season. So unless Evra shows much better form next season this was a terrible move.

Sure, I should have added the suffix of 'in the first team'. He shouldn't be a starter anymore and someone at his age is only offering experience. Which I am more than happy to have because I enjoy him as a person/footballer.

Oh yes, the captain bit as well that just popped into my mind. I am not sure I was every really happy with him wearing the armband. But I absolutely loved how he handled the racism incident on the field and the guy 'gets' United. So I am not going to shun that.

If we were getting rid of players that had awful seasons last season then we'd only be left with De Gea and Januzaj. The season just gone should not be used as a barrometer of how good anyone is. It was a disaster all round.

So no one thinks this is insurance in case Shaw falls through?

This has nothing to do with Shaw. As per the terms of his contract Evra's had the option of a 1 year extension on the table for months now due to the amount of appearances made.

Wouldn't surprise me if he delayed signing because he wanted to see who would be in charge next season first.
