Evra extends contract

Obviously good news.
If we do finally sort Shaw out, it'd be mad to expect him to start 40+ games on a higher stage straight away, so he and Evra can job share.
Yes sir. It would be crazy to expect an 18 year old with a huge price tag around his neck to play an entire season at Manchester United.

Well if Evra left on a free transfer, he could have pocketed a hefty singing on fee. I don't believe there is market for him actually. He has a rather large salary and with a fee involved now most of the clubs would just not be interested in him.

Just because he's signed a new deal doesn't mean there's no possibility of him moving elsewhere. Yes it's good news that he's extended just in case the Shaw deal goes tits up but it's best taking it with a pinch of salt, I still think Evra wants to move.
I would think it is. No player signs a one year contract when they want to leave.

So happy that he is staying on, hopefully his personality and passion for the club can rub off on the other players. Would have been too uncomfortable losing all that experience an certainly in Evra's case, character in the dressing room.

Evra triggered the 1 year extension clause offer (played a certain amount of games last season). So it has nothing to do with any deals going to or not going to happen.

Um yes it does. You have to convince the player to stay and only then can the extension deal be activated.

Give me some examples of teenagers moving from mid table teams to giant clubs starting 40-50 games in recent seasons, "sir"

Good news...as long as this doesn't mean that we have given up on signing Shaw and that Evra is going to play every game again.

Great news! He's my favourite player at the club and has been for years. Now get rid of Buttman, buy a young LB and ease him in. Evra can still be very good if he's not played 40+ games a season.

Shaw has been the first choice LB at Southampton for almost two seasons now. And we will not have to worry about European Football next season. If we get Shaw I hope Evra does not cut into his playing time at all.

Based on what?
Based on that he's always said he wants to end his career back in France or maybe elsewhere.

What world are you living in? Do you know what a contract being signed means?
I live in the real world and not some fantasy land which seems the place you live in. Yeah it means in some cases it can increase the value of some players, just like the situation with Nani.

So why did he sign?

Which is completely irrelevant in this case.

Any questions?

Shaw is an 18 year old who has never experienced the weight of a massive price tag, nor the pressure that goes hand in hand with playing for a club like Man United. He will have to be eased in.

I don't know really, i am happy, but what does it mean for our new LB? I don't think having both Evra and Shaw is sustainable really. Neither of them is suited for a "cover", especially without LG matches.

Though Shaw may be destined for genuine greatness, and perhaps very soon, he still need to prove he can make the step up to elite club football. Likewise, its always good to have healthy competition as well as a mentor who is not threatened by you.

Im sure part of Evra's extension is under the explicit understanding that he is expected to tolerate being dropped in favour of Shaw as well as mentor and teach him all the tricks he knows. Evra knows he is in the autumn of his career and will now be thinking about he legacy effect too.

Assuming we sign Shaw, this is the best scenario possible as proper sucesion planning. And lets not forget Evra came in and had to displace the very popular Gabriel Heinze. And he did not to too badly out of that.

Glad Evra is staying another year. Hopefully we will get Shaw and we can let them battle it out to be first choice.

I love Evra and all he has given to the club but, I think he needed to be shown the door. Out of all the players in our first 11 he was by far the worst. Whoever is our first choice LB next season I hope Evra does not cut into their playing time at all.

What's with the general assumption of Shaw being a done deal? Am I missing something here. We have known things to go tits up irrespective of what we hear in the media. Has Shaw or the club confirmed it? If yes, then I am sure I have made a massive fool of myself.

Your real world isn't really real at all, sadly.

Don't worry, you haven't. It pretty much is being reported as a done deal in various sections of the media but nothing has been confirmed yet.

So how does this work in relation to Shaw and whether it happens? Shaw is good enough to be an automatic starter, so I don't get why he'd want to come to Untied and be "shown the ropes" by Evra or play 2nd fiddle to him or whatever nonsense. On the reverse, I also don't get why Evra would want to willingly stay on and play cover, knowing he could still probably be a starter for a French club somewhere.

Duncan Castles is now saying that Van Gaal wants Evra and Shaw to share the position.

Good news. If of course Shaw comes in then it'll ease the pressure on him. I think Paddy could still probably offer something if he isn't playing as many games. He must be our most capped player over the past 5 years.

Thanks for confirming that. In that case I would be highly skeptical of calling Shaw a United player and including him in discussions about our future direction. A certain defender from Chelsea is fetching them 40m and they can very well derail our bid for Shaw. I will only be convinced once I see him with Eddy holding a United shirt.

Which is what a few of us have been saying.
That's ridiculous, why would Shaw want to do that knowing he could probably start at Chelsea or another club if he accepts them? Same goes for Evra in relation to other clubs. I don't see why either of them would be okay with "sharing", one will have to accept he's the starter and will probably not play except in minor cup games or injuries.
