Evra extends contract

I'm happy with this.

Evra's experience is going to be helpful next season with so many senior and seasoned pros already gone.

Good news, he still has a few years left at top level and it wasn't his fault we couldn't rest him even in the summer friendlies. If we use him carefully, given the fact that he doesn't get injured very often, we're going to be more than okay in the LB position next season.

He certainly is a player from whom Shaw will learn a lot. I guess this also confirms the rumors about Buttner's future at the club. In an recent interview LvG refused to talk about United's transfer targets but when a journalist asked him how can he consider Buttner good enough for United when he doesn't consider him good enough for the national team, van Gaal's response was that it wouldn't be fair to discuss the player's future without having spoken with him first.

Anyway it's nice that one of the very best foreign players who have worn the red shirt is going to stay with us for one more season at least. We still need his experience, his winning spirit and his leadership skills. Imo if he doesn't have to play weak in weak out, he still is one of the best LBs around. It's a shame Vidic didn't wait a few months before signing to Inter, i'm sure LvG would've convinced him too to stick around for one more season.

Awesome news, very happy to hear that! Now let's get Shaw tied up and at least we'll have sorted out one of our problem positions.

The Frenchman, whose contract expires this summer, was set to leave after enduring a miserable time under previous manager David Moyes.

Things are said to have come to a head in a bizarre row over bacon sandwiches in a lounge at Manchester Airport before the club jetted out for a Champions League away match.

Staff at the airport are said to have laid on the butties as a goodwill gesture but the Scot was reportedly furious with Evra when he took one.

On the flight the mischievous defender is rumoured to have made a passenger announcement, explaining that there had been a change to the in-flight menu and that it would be bacon sandwiches all round.

:D

I don't get why people think Evra and Shaw in the team is a good idea, and why would Evra ease Shaw into it. Shaw is a young player, he needs games to progress, and he will be expected to start most of them. Evra on the other hand may well be past his peak, but he is still a marvelous athlete, he rarely get's injured, i just looked, he made 40+ appearances a season 7 years in a row. This season he made 45, including 33 in PL. I just don't see how it could work in a way that it would benefit them both. Especially without european football, one of them would surely have very limited time on the field.

The combination of his superhuman resistance to injury (has he ever pulled a muscle?) and lack of cover means we've never had a chance to use Evra sparingly. He's been showing his age in the closing weeks of the last couple of seasons. If we do sign Shaw it could give Paddy a new lease of life.

Good to hear that. If Shaw joins us he should be the first option for the team but having Evra as a backup/alternative if Shaw doesn't hit ground running makes me feel much more save than only having Büttner.

Bacon sandwiches

Glad hes staying for the reasons most have said. We will play between 38-50 games this season right? Even though its pretty much one a week now, this will be good.

Just because he's signed a new deal doesn't mean there's no possibility of him moving elsewhere. Yes it's good news that he's extended just in case the Shaw deal goes tits up but it's best taking it with a pinch of salt, I still think Evra wants to move.

Based on what?

As I said in the other thread, I'm sure he could have had a massive contract at PSG or Monaco but not many players leave this club for money.

Players like Pat are why this club's history continues from one team to the next - he'll be a vital building block in the creation of our next team under van Gaal, without doubt.

I agree with this. I would imagine Shaw will be thinking very hard about whether he wants to be cover for Evra, even if it is only for a season. I wasn't convinced of the wisdom of paying so much for Shaw a few weeks ago when it seemed certain Evra was off. Now it seems crazy.

What world are you living in? Do you know what a contract being signed means?

Thank fook. Shaw will be a great player but having Evra around is a huge bonus after losing Rio and Vidic.

Why do you lot assume we're getting Shaw? I think the fact that we haven't heard of him since the bid over two weeks ago speaks volumes.

I am glad to hear that, I like him and he is still better backup than Buttner, but I really hope he doesn't start in more than 10-15 games next season.

Probably in the world when United extended Berba's offer in 2012 in order to sell him. We had that option on Evra, so it makes sense to extende his contract. If we can't sing Shawn then at-least we have Evra, otherwise we can keep both of them for one year or sell Evra for a couple of millions or so.

To be fair, Ogden was on MUTV earlier saying that he'll join and that it's just a matter of time.

Was that what happened? Signed to extend in order to sell him- the whole purpose of signing?! You're not understanding it quite right mate!

Evra is 33. How much do you think an extra year is going to add to his worth?

Yep. We had the option of extending Berba's contract (we usually have this option on most of the players like X + 1 contract, the player can't refuse the extension) and then sold him a few weeks later for 4-5m.

Evra's extension clause was activated because he played a certain amount of games last season, it wasn't a compulsory extension, if he wanted to go he would have.

You're wrong on all fronts

He's not, Berbatov could have left on a free but we activated the 1 year extension clause in March, even though we still planned to move him on in the coming window, it was so we didn't miss out on a fee.

Obviously good news.
If we do finally sort Shaw out, it'd be mad to expect him to start 40+ games on a higher stage straight away, so he and Evra can job share.

Evra can put in some big displays and know he won't be over taxed as per the last 5 or so years, and Shaw can take a step out of the limelight every so often.

If I'm not mistaken this would make him eligible for a testimonial. Too bad Vida left a season earlier.
