Ever Banega

Wouldn't it work almost perfectly with those 2 together? Martinez holding with Banega given the freedom to move from box-to-box? From what I've seen of Eber, he looks pretty mobile on the ball & Martinez, whilst strong, is certainly no slouch. Id at least have faith that CM would be covered defensively, with more then enough technical ability to retain the ball for us.

But you've watched much more of Banega, probably both tbf. So I'll trust your judgement on this one. Though I think they're both massive talents, and young - which is a bonus.

They are both talents for sure, and I dont think their pace would be a problem next to someone with decent pace like Fletcher or better than decent pace like Anderson.

But both Banega and Martinez together may be too slow to close down and get back to help out with balls that by-pass the midfield. So I'm thinking they'd both be at their best with a faster player next to them. I dont think speed is a big issue for an individual player in central midfield, but for the partner to have the same issue could be taking a risk

Martinez is pretty much the epitome of box-to-box. That guy would be wasted just sitting back.

He's currently playing CB. He doesnt usually go box to box in general play, instead he spreads the ball to the wings and front players and its on set pieces he'll get forward and get some goals. Wouldnt call him anymore box to box than Carrick

^ Yep, that's how I've seen him aswell, though he has the ability to add to the attack when the team is on the front foot (he's technically very accomplished on the ball and a good passer as well).

He's actually very similar to Carrick IMO of course, but with a bit more bollocks/edge/steel about him. Which is what I like. Ekeke, please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Anyhow let's not derail the thread....Banega

Martinez is quite a physical player which is strange for a Spanish midfielder of quality these days. He can play in a slick passing side and his own passing is quite good. I wouldnt go overboard with it, but I do think he can rival Carrick's distribution at his best so it deserves mention. I just dont see him as the defence splitter and creative force that players like Modric and Banega can be. He wont be bullied or pushed off the ball and he can put a tackle in. I havent watched him in Bilbao's defence this season but it wouldnt be a big surprise if he's doing a good job. The only actual issue is that, like with Banega, he's not that fast. So its probably best not to play him next to other players like that. I'd imagine that having several slower central midfielders trying to close down the oppositions passers in midfield arent going to meet great success because the ball will move faster than they can. Just speculating though

Nah, sounds about right, though Keane/Scholes midfield was never blessed with pace either - but the game has moved on since.

I'd be delighted with either player tbh.

Not lots of information but...

It's Javi but it might be pronounced with a 'b' if Xavi's name is anything to go by, so it'd be an easy mistake to make.

For me its our defending in midfield that is sometimes questionable rather than our creativity.

@ Sarni - thanks mate, figured it had something to do with the pronounciation. Though still a bit uncanny for a national rag to make that mistake!

@ Chief - I'd agree before spending on creativity, we need more of a defensive midfielder/leader but sometimes a talent comes along which you just cannot miss out on and Banega easily falls into that category. He also puts in his fair share of defensive work.

Came off after 20 something minutes against Leverkusen with a knee injury. Valencia have already lost Canales for 6 months due to a knee injury, if Banega is out for a similar time then they can pretty much kiss goodbye to 4th place in la liga this season.

I watched Valencia v Malaga for just five minutes and he played two fantastic passes. The solution, sign him up.

Was his first full game back from a month and a half or so out injured. Wasnt his best match but he had his typical 4 or 5 pieces of mouth watering play trying to put Soldado's hatrick on a plate for him.

this thread has the potential to be a muppet hotspot during january...

Just read above someone saying it would be a muppet hotspot come January. Surely the muppets need something to feed off!

Well lets put it this way. We're being linked to Biglia, Banega's international team mate. Not only does Banega have more talent in his little toe than Biglia has total, but Gago is a better player than Biglia. And thats saying something

Have you seen a lot of this Biglia? I read one of these reports about him and they compared him to Redondo, though I thought it was a bit odd that he's 25 and playing for Anderlecht.

I've seen too much of him already, although really thats a handful of times for the national team. He's your average holding midfielder

I've spoken about his contract situation earlier in the thread, cant be bothered to go look back myself :p But if I recall he had like 18 months on his contract last time I talked about it. So he's getting towards his final year

What would be a fair price for him with 18 month left in his contract?

I have always rated Banega as a perfect signing for us. Probably better the Modric because of has a sharper end product. His most valuable attribute is that he can control and deliver the ball under high press and in tight situations.

We will probably not buy him but if there are another player out there similar to Banega we should be alert and ready. Class player.

I dont know, I'd think Valencia would want about what Silva and Mata went for before him. somewhere near the 30 million euro mark. But all the time his contract is running down, the less they can expect to recoup. We've seen with Ashley Young that even a player in his last year can cost a sizable amount and we've also seen that United have been willing to pay it. Right now I'd say about 23 million euros is the kind of fee that might Convince Valencia to let him go, and a top club like United might be willing to pay if they decided he was the player for them. But there's always the chance that Valencia get him to sign a new contract in the coming months, especially as their financial situation is now the best it has been since about 2008. So they should be able to reward some of their best players with improved deals

Well what would Fergie be looking for? ....A defensive midfielder that is happy to spend time on the bench when we play 442 as Carrick and Cleverly for sure will be starting those games. And a player who will come off the bench in a midfield 3 to sit in front of our defence when we are playing away to tough teams like City etc!! Does Biglia fit into that catagory? Yes...Would Banega be happy to spend lots of time on the bench? Probably not
Is it better to sign a stop gap with Pogba and Tunnicliffe coming through the ranks or better to sign an expensive player that will hamper the progress of some of the younger players coming through?

Does anyone what his release clause his? Wasn't it pretty low this past summer when Inter were linked with him?

I dont see why Biglia would be a better option than the likes of Pogba. We have plenty of experience in midfield now with Giggs, Carrick and even Anderson has played plenty of matches now. We dont need a stop game, we need improvement
