Europa League 24/25

People are naturally fearful. We are the worst Man Utd side in the modern era and even when we were good we had a habit of being soundly beaten by Spanish sides in Europe.

It's a nonsense myth that we have some block against Spanish sides. In recent years, we beat both Real Betis and Celta Vigo in Europe. We of course, lost to Villarreal in the final due to Solskjaer's tactical inadequacy and Atleti in the CL because Bruno dropped a horror show and we were nowhere near Atleti's level.

And we beat Villarreal in the group stages of CL. So that's 3 wins and 2 losses. Ie, we lose and win against Spanish teams as we lose and win against other teams. Nothing out of the ordinary.

The tie will be hard, not because La Real are Spanish (they are also only 11th in La Liga), but only because we have 3 recognized forwards and a decimated squad. Also, many Spanish teams are prime divers and drama queens, and refs usually give us the short end of the stick.

Sociedad, Lyon and Roma/Bilbao to make the final.

Now would be a good time to find our goalscoring boots.

Can't see much joy their for the 2 English sides - difficult to see United beating Sociedad especially with Amad now out for the season, Spurs may squeak past AZ but I think they'll be beaten in the QF.
Spurs will win it, if they have some luck with injuries.

Quietly confident. We've clearly downed tools long ago in the league while we've picked up decent results in the cups. Home in second leg could be key and hopefully this comp will give everyone including the crowd a lift and we'll be well up for it and raise our game like we have done in some of the bigger games this season already.

We would have beaten Villarreal in that final if it were not for individual mistakes grrrr

You're entitled to that opinion but I'd have much preferred Spurs draw.
Recent history shows us that Spanish teams are to be avoided and we have 2 on our side and probably a decent Lyon side who pumped Rangers in Ibrox sandwiched in between.
The way I see it following teams have a chance of winning the EL: Spurs, Frankfurt, Lazio, Roma, Lyon, Bilbao and yes even United.

3 on Spurs side, 4 on United's side, that's not that big of a difference. But if course this is highly subjective.

That we look as bad as them, most likely.

They're even less capable of scoring goals then we are. 20 league goals all season. They're closer to the relegation zone points wise than we are, and they've lost four of their last five league games. Hardly a terrifying proposition is it? Both teams look pretty similar yet people are acting like we've run into some invicible foe.
Almost every foe is invincible for this United side.

And we are only getting one of Roma/Bilbao on our way to the final, not both…. But how dare you leave out the mighty Sociedad ?

Need us to be the plucky underdog cup team for the rest of the season. Even at our worst, we still win more trophies than most clubs. Cautiously confident, not based on evidence of this team but the history of our club, that we'll turn our for at least one if not both cups.

Yeah I'm not really seeing a much easier side of the draw either. Spurs have to play some decent teams to win it.

Funny thing is Sociedad are 11th in La Liga, they've lost more games than they've won and Lyon are 6th in Ligue 1. Neither of them are pulling up any trees domestically yet we are so horrible that nobody believes we can get to a semifinal.

And even if we do, Athletic/Roma seem well beyond our reach.

Squad value: 1st
League table: 3rd
Next round: playing the 13th

Everybody who thinks that United doesn't stand a chance against Sociedad should take a long look at the EL results so far this season and then another one in the mirror and asking himself why he is so scared.

I don't even fear the tie, I expect us to lose really. I'm just annoyed that it will to another rancid Spanish side who have more interest in "dark arts" than playing a football match. Fecking horrible teams.

I guarantee there will be at least six instances of a Sociedad player going screaming while holding his face over the two legs.

Because we're absolutely terrible

Well we are actually favourites to beat them so yeah.
Would't put United favourites against any team at the moment. Have struggled against the worst sides in the Premier league at home, and now add in the season over injuries for Amad,Martinez.

Coming back from Spain with the tie in the balance will be easier said than done let's be honest.

Squad value: 1st
You lost me after that.

The United squad is thread bare, just look at the bench from the last game.

To get past Sociedad-Lyon-Athletic and then likely face Lazio in final...yeah not happening for us. We'd have to play out of our skins for 5 of those 6 legs and quite frankly this team isn't capable of doing it once!
What a sad reality. And this is such a soft cup this year. Hardest route possible, but it’s not really relevant as we’re likely out at the first hurdle.

If you think we can't score a goal to save our lives, check out how many goals they've scored after 24 matches. It's going to be a celebration of the sport, when we meet, i'm telling you...

They're both scoring and conceding less than a goal per match. That is proper Pulis-at-Stoke stuff.

They’ve also conceded as few goals as Real Madrid. If they do get the first goal, it’s going to become very difficult

Who is home first leg? And when are these played?

I'd have preferred 3 out of 4 of the SF options on the other side of the draw. Just Lazio I'd fear from those. But if it does end up being those, then they're every bit as strong as 3 out of 4 of the options on our side in Roma, Bilbao and Jose's Fenerbahce.

The last 16 and QF options were similar either way. Was hoping for AZ or Midtylland rather than Galatasaray or Sociedad, so a shame to get one of them. But Galatasaray were the one I mainly wanted to avoid, Midtylland the one I most wanted to play. So when it came down to AZ or Sociedad there wasn't a huge difference. And QF options looks similar whichever side of the draw we'd been on.

Overall, would have probably just about preferred the other side but, either way, the much bigger issue remains us and our form and attacking limitations rather than which of the reasonably similar level of opponents we face.

We are fine in cup competitions. We have beaten much stronger opponents in cup competitions, we will reach the final.
