Europa League 2011/2012

Think this is going to be the most exciting Europa League group stage yet. Usually I wouldn't watch them to save my life, but the Shamrock games and a few others should be exciting.

Shamrock Rovers the Caf team 2011-2012?

Reinstate Sion, says Swiss court
A Swiss regional court has ordered UEFA to re-admit FC Sion to the Europa League group stages, according to the club.

Sion were excluded from the tournament on September 2 for fielding ineligible players, with Celtic promoted to the competition in their place.

UEFA are currently hearing the Swiss club's appeal against their expulsion ahead of Thursday's opening group game against Atletico Madrid.

A statement on Sion's official website read: "The civil court has this morning ordered UEFA to admit FC Sion as a participant in the 2011-12 Europa League and to take all the measures necessary to include them in Group I of the UEFA Europa League for which FC Sion have qualified.

"The Canton de Vaud Tribune also orders UEFA to consider the players Stefan Glarner, Billy Ketkeophomphone, Mario Mutsch, Pascal Feindouno, Jose Goncalves and Gabri as eligible as FC Sion players and to admit them in the 2011-12 UEFA Europa League.

"The order has been declared immediately binding."

Sion beat Celtic 3-1 on aggregate in the play-offs but were expelled for fielding ineligible players after signing six players when FIFA stated they were in the midst of a transfer embargo.

Celtic are now preparing for a game in Spain but Sion's controversial president Christian Constantin claims his side also intend to travel to the Spanish capital.UEFA have declined to make any comment until a decision is reached in today's appeal hearing.

Erm, this could be interesting.

FFS, God knows whats going on:

Celtic and Sion now both claiming that they've been given go ahead to compete in Europa League. UEFA statement due in next half hour

Ok. sion are definitely out. Celtic will play in Madrid on Thursday

Sion are apparently travelling as well still.

They must have tickets for the match or something :)

How did they not know they had a transfer embargo? How does that even happen?

Me in Rennes.

Swiss club FC Sion took their feud against UEFA to Bern, saying Wednesday that they had written to ask the Swiss finance minister to withdraw tax breaks to Europe's football governing body.

The feck? Sion, who the feck do you think you are? Learn to take it like a man

Looking forward to Celtic playing Atletico Madrid tonight. Celtic are quite simply woeful away from home in Europe and have been for many years. I wont complain if i see them get a good hiding tonight. Falcao, Arda Turan and Diego should all be playing in the new look Atletico side.

Is this one on TV?

Can you not call Shamrock Rovers 'Shamrock' please? It is not the done thing.

Also, I hope they lose 100-0. And are thrown out of the competition for being cnuts.

Well it's not just you...Sky Sports do it too. I blame them.

Anyway..you should hate them rcoobc. They're a shower of wankers and this whole Europa thing is going to feck up Irish football even worse than it has already been, which is pretty bad.

Do you mean by the fact that they will get more money than other clubs and dominate for a while? It might work the other way with other clubs raising their game and improving because of this. You could be right though. Could go the way of a one team dominate all for a while though. i hope not mind. Few of my friends have started to go back to LOI matches. Renewed interest

My interest stems only from its rags to riches story and that they seem to have a good connection to at least a few Caf members. A few people seem to think the money that goes into Shamrock Rovers from the Europa League will see its way into the rest of the league sooner or later.

Hopefully the league will remain competitive though.

Could somebody pm me a stream for the Spurs game later, got a mate coming round to watch it and I haven't got ESPN.

Or any good sites to use when the time comes. Myp2p is down.

Watching Spurs v PAOK here in Greece. 0-0 at HT but PAOK were awarded a penalty,, scored but had to retake it because Cudicini moved off his line. The same pen taker took it again and missed. Spurs fielding a few reserves and have had the better of the half. Townend is playing very well on left wing but Pavlochenko is playing his usual, like a donkey.

Sadly not.

FT 0-0 PAOK v Spurs.
Spurs very lucky to get a point. PAOK hit the bar in last minute and Cudicini made 2 brilliant saves.
Some luck it's true, but then again the ref failed to give a blatant penalty to Spurs in the first half when Kane was very clearly brought down.

Harry was right to field a mainly youth team: a decent result in a difficult away game, valuable experience for many youngsters, most of the first team rested for a much more important match against Liverpool. Job done.

Yes, as you say job done and it was a tricky tie in front of a very vocal crowd. Thought Carrol was very good, along with Livermore and Kane. Thought Pavyluchenko was rubbish though.

There was an article that talked about Rovers' qualification and what it really means exposing this whole 'isn't it jolly good for the league' thing for the rubbish it really is. I'll try and find it, it articulates it better than I could.

I would articulate it as "Rovers scum" to be fair.

What can I say moses, I really don't like them.:)

Me either dude, and my bro is a season ticket holder and they are no located in my old hood, and all my old mates who ignored LOI while I went to Bohs and Pats are all now 'lifelong' fans. Twats. How do you think it feels to be me?

Yeah they're the worst. My biggest fear is that with Tottenham playing kids Rovers might get a result on them, adding more wheels to the bandwagon.

It's from a Shels fanzine Bread, so it won't be online, I'd have to type it up. I'll have a look tomorrow, take the main points out of it, and stick it up for you.
