Erik Ten Hag: Press Conference in Bangkok

He said Maguire will be captain because “he has achieved great success”. Hopefully he gets him playing better than he has shown so far.
It was a pretty obvious answer really. As he said he's been there 2 weeks and barely knows the players yet. Changing the captain at this point would be way more damaging to morale.

No need to rock the boat at a point where he's trying to rebuild confidence.

The question about how Frankie De Jongs style of play will fit in at the club was the most pointless question. No manger is going to talk about a player that has not signed for the club.

He said that he'd had a really long chat with Ronaldo and that everything was fine. So I'd assumed that he was aware of what was going on behind the scenes and everything was all good.

But the journo rightly clarified that by asking if that long chat had occurred before or after Ronaldo went awol. Turns out it was actually before and he's not spoken to Ronaldo since he requested the personal leave.
That goes along with reports little after ETH was appointed that Ronaldo is happy to stay and work with ETH.

Dunno why anyone arses with press conferences. You rarely learn anything new.

And? He’s saying him and Ronaldo had a long chat about his future here presumably a few weeks ago. And Ronaldo is now missing the tour due to a family issue. The fact he hasn’t spoken personally to Ronaldo about his family issue is irrelevant.

For the record I’m convinced Ronaldo is off and ETH wants him out but there was nothing contradictory in what he said at all.

To be fair we did learn that Maguire will stay on as captain.

Contrary to the caf's belief that a top coach will come in and take captaincy away cause Ole had no clue what he was doing giving it to him.

How?

We have a good squad and will only bring in the right players. When pressed he said we need to strengthen midfield and attack. So basically everything Ducker etc have been reporting correlates.
Sound. Wonder then if he wants Martinez as DM if he only stated about strengthen in midfield and Attack.

The main lesson from that EtH press conference is to not pay any attention to EtH press conferences. He won't give you anything. I'm fine with that, tbh. It's just a bit of a change from what United fans have been used to.

True. That's largely because of the inane questioning, though. I guess that's why they are on sports desks instead of doing proper journalism.

Not the most charismatic is he. But hopefully it won't matter if he entertains with his football.

Annoyed that Harry Maguire is the captain, but I suppose he wasn't going to say anything else. Hopefully that changes as the season starts and he realizes what we all know.

If you have a long chat with a manager and you're giving the impression that you're fully behind the project and can't wait to contribute and help him be successful, that conversation is going to take a very different tone to one where you are saying that you definitely want to leave because the club ain't all that and you have your reputation to think of first etc., etc.

Right. Except he didn’t say this. ETH specifically said they had a good chat, Ronaldo didn’t say he wanted to leave and that’s only something he’s read in the papers, he isn’t for sale and is a big part of next season’s plans. Since that conversation happened he’s missing the tour due to a family issue. That’s the version of events laid out in that press conference.

Disliking a black man doing what a lot people do, for no apparent reason except for being a ‘fraud’. Yeah I would think it has racial undertone.

Unless people can identity why he’s a fraud ?
Why does it have a racial undertone? Does it have a racial undertone for disliking Goldbridge for doing the exact same thing?

Flex & his company was pulled apart on Twitter years ago, if you must set yourself up as a "fancam" to make money off slating the club 24/7 then being an actual United fan would be a good start for your credibility - which is also why him & Goldbridge etc are "frauds". I don't like the fancams and the concept of them, never have, but I guess my relative ambivalence towards McKola because at least he's a genuine United fan must be rooted in racial undertones too?

Agreed and this response is really the only way to handle the situation.

If we want to find someone who will pay for him, which seems unlikely already, we can't go around confirming that he's desperate to leave. What is more likely though is we can't shift him and this messaging just makes his last season with the club not start under the headlines of how he's unwanted etc.

So, the main takeaways:
  • Ten Hag is towing party line re Ronaldo (not for sale, missing tour due to family issues, planning with him in the team next season).
  • Ten Hag hasn't spoken to Ronaldo since Mendes told the world that he wants to leave, but he did have positive talks with him earlier in the summer.
  • Maguire remains as captain.
  • We are looking to strengthen the midfield and the attack (interestingly, not the defence, which makes me wonder if L. Martinez is perhaps a midfield target?)
  • Ten Hag thinks we will need more players next season than in a normal season, due to the unusual physical demands placed upon them by a mid-season world cup.
  • There is apparently a human being called 'Flex'.
  • We can expect Ten Hag to be the antithesis to Rangnick in his dealings with the media - very little given away, not much embellishment - one word answers given where appropriate.

"We want to have the right players. We have a really good squad, we're working on developing our way of play and if the opportunity is there, we will strike"

My oh my, doesn't sound too optimistic, but maybe it's just his style and not wanting to reveal much

Transcript of the presser please :(

And you believe all of that do you? That's my point. If the conversation had taken place before Ronaldo went awol, he would not have told ten Hag he wanted to leave then would he? That only came to light a few days before he was due back for training. And exactly how much time does he need? Isn't Ronaldo training in Portugal?

To be fair we did learn that Maguire will stay on as captain.

Contrary to the caf's belief that a top coach will come in and take captaincy away cause Ole had no clue what he was doing giving it to him.

Yeah that's true. Mostly it's just 'I cannot talk about other players', 'It's a good test for us', 'looking forward to it/working hard'.

Used to be on the United stand and now has his own youtube channel, United View. A lot less negative diarrhea and honestly not bad listen. He goes on skysports now and then as well.

Or he's not that interested in transfer business. He's a coach first and foremost. It's the polar opposite of someone like Solskjaer who had close to no interest on what happened on the training ground and just worked for the transfer windows.
