Asking them to run 14km in the heat a day after the game is not likely to make them run more in the next game.

If he wants to hold them responsible for playing poorly a good start would be not playing the players who underperform, or ideally replace them. I bet that won’t be on the menu when the time comes and we will see Shaw, Maguire etc. as first names on the team sheet against Liverpool.

This reminds me of when Poland hired a 65-year old Smuda with 1980s methods prior to Euro 2012 and he ended up running the whole team into the ground because he felt it would make them tougher.

He can't do that due to clowns above him

I agree with this. Where was the fury before now? He has been backed, it's just that we he spent the money poorly (Martinez) and not at all (FDJ) they are 100% on ETH. As for the Ronaldo circus, he seemed desperate to keep him for some reason. He had his chance to let him leave when he asked.
And you think buying Martinez and malaria is enough backing. Stop spewing nonsense and reason.
Waiting for fdj till window close and getting him is worth it.

No. Have another go at reading what I posted.

We don't have the squad to punish underperforming players bar a few positions though. Is he supposed to start Garnacho in his first game against Liverpool? Is James Garner against Liverpool a good idea as his first real Premier League game? We need actual competition for places all across the field and we don't have that apart from left back and center half.

Also I don't think it is fair to say he isn't holding them responsible when he made 3 subs at halftime and said after the game he could have subbed the other 8 players.

I'm guessing we've already discussed Ten Hag's comments about him telling the players to play it long to beat the press, and the players not doing it?

Frank's comes out to say the targeted Martinez with long balls? OK the only long ball he did not deal with was from a corner that was flicked on. I still think ETH has to start Varane if he's fit . Martinez imo can play if needed as a DM . It's been a nightmare start , contrast to last season with a good start. Time will tell no need to panic,or listen to all the hasbeens ex pros who can't manage a team just Talkshite.

I'm sure ten Hag would love to replace them. Literally reports are coming out that he's pleading with them to make signings. Every presser he is saying we need signings. The board just doesn't care about being successful again.

What is this obsession with EtH walking?

Not only does it seriously damage EtH’s reputation (effectively running away when things get tough) but it just plunges us further snd further away from the top 2

What elite manager is going to come to Man Utd if the most exciting young manager decides to walk 3 games into the season. No one will.

Some of you lot live in FM land.
Because it's the honourable thing. 500 years ago people in some parts of the world were obsessed with putting a sword through their midsection.

Optimistic. 8.5 miles constant in 30 degrees is pretty intense to be fair. Don't get me wrong these professional athletes on 100s of thousands per week shouldn't be huffing and puffing but they will feel it after a full weeks training plus a game the day before.
Brentford players managed to run that extra distance all within 90 minutes. The wasters in our squad have at least had a night's sleep to freshen up first

I don’t agree with that last statement. The structure of the first team set up has only been revamped over the past 8 months or so. What we are seeing this transfer window is the culmination of poor leadership and management over a decade. This will take a few years to resolve. Ten Hag is not the next Sir Alex or busby but I think he’ll get us up there with time. It’s clear that this current squad of players is not up to standard but you can’t replace an entire squad in one window. Buying quality also becomes far more difficult from a position of weakness especially when you don’t have a scouting system in place that the manger trusts.

'Pleading' sounds very dramatic  . Visions of him weeping and falling on his knees before the board: "I beseech you: please please don't make me pick McFred again. It's not right!".

Should be reacting like that

Yes but after a season like last year, it's imperative to shake up the squad. You simply need to spend big. You need to replace a host of players. That's painfully obvious with our squad. And yet here we are, among the lowest spenders in the league. Its crazy that a club like ours is so inactive in the window after last season, and when the competitors are so active. You can't replace an entire squad, but you sure as hell can do a lot more than what we've done this window. It's pathetic. And that inactivity sends a message to the squad that they don't care about being successful. Go ahead. Have a 0 goal difference season and embarass the club all season. Won't change much in the summer, go ahead and do it again next year. The manager doesn't stand a chance without being backed.

At least the previous managers were able to make big changes in their first window or 2. Whatever financial advantage we previously had has seemingly run out and we can't even give our manager a chance at a turnover for what he needs. I mean it's the first time we hired a system specific manager in a bid to get us to the top... And we can't even give him players that he needs to implement it. Stories coming out how he is reluctant to move on from Frenkie de Jong because the finances won't be available to him if he signs others and then Frenkie wants to come at the end of the window. That just shouldn't happen. We should be able to spend big, get rid of those he doesn't want, and still spend big on Frenkie if it opens up at the end of the window. Everyone has a budget, but not 50m ffs. We're being outspent by Nottingham Forest. Its insane.

But Brentford ran 14k more in the actual game yesterday and are probably off for 2 days now.

I do agree there’s a risk of burnout but if these Brentford players can run that distance more yesterday then something isn’t right. After todays session they will be on the same distance as a team playing yesterday, we’re miles behind in even the basics it seems.

Ten Hag is 52, he’s older than Guardiola. In fact there’s only 3/4 managers older than him in the Premier League.

(but I agree otherwise, we won’t walk, and even if he does no elite manager would walk in. We’d go with our tails between our legs to Poch, he’s still free right?)

I don’t think money is the problem. We have pledged over 80 million for FDJ. I just don’t think that the scouting structure is in place or management mature enough to target the right players. No good players will want to join United with the current negativity around the club.

Hope it’s just false reporting or otherwise it’s just incredibly dumb and serves absolutely no purpose. If these are his training methods he will be gone before Christmas.
Don’t be so soft. Actions have consequences.

No. 16 Brentford players managed to run that distance between them.

The stat isn't individual.

What i dont get is that Steve Mclaren is part of his staff and has PL experience. Surely he would have said to ETH when he was deciding his team that he needed more height. Brendford were the 4th best team in PL from set pieces last season. Surely that tells you something.

Surely mclaren would have told him despite Utd not having won a PL in 9 years, they are a scalp every team in PL aims for regardless.

Was it really the arrogance and ego of ETH that made him think he could control possession against brentford and therefore not worry about the height? Or are players impressing in training but not on the pitch?

Height wasn't the issue.

The deeper issue was the players not listening to instructions and bypassing the press by playing long, as they were told too.

Is there anything to discuss, really? It's a comment that, at best, speaks of his desperation with what he was watching on the pitch. Play it long to whom exactly? Rashford can't win a header to save his life. Sancho wants the ball to his feet. Ronaldo can jump high and win the first ball but, at the age of 37, he falls down the moment he feels any sort of contact. And who's in the midfield to win the second balls? Bruno? There's Fred, but he loses the ball as easily as he can recover it. Some may laugh at this, but there needs to be a proper set-up that distinguishes long-ball build-up from just hoofing the ball. The two keys are: a) Fight for the first ball and b) win most of the 50/50s afterward. ETH has neither prepared the team nor cared to have the personnel to play that way. The players tried to do what he's been trying to teach them in the build-up. He can blame them for failing miserably at it and ask for better ones. But he can't blame them for not wanting to play street football. Especially when they look lost at sea and in desperate need for some guidance.

Extra fitness work in the guise of punishment is a fundamental part of building character in most sport environments.

Conte would have had them running till they puked.

Apparently there are people in the utd infrastructure who are quite annoyed and pissed off with how recruitment it going this summer. They did all their work on the targets, but someone somewhere at the club decided to ignore all that and directly go with recommendations from ETH personally. There was an Athletic podcast which mentioned this last week.

It begs the question, what is the point of a scouting department, them filimg reports and re recommendations from the recruitment team being ignored?

Something isnt right at the club. RR was shocked that Utd werent scouting nkunku at alll last season despite him being hot property in the bundesliga.

What happen to copying liverpools transfer commitee approach where the manager, dof and cheif scout between decide on what targets to go after?

Not just, well i managed anartovic before therefore thats good enough. We need a RB, so why arent we targeting the next cancelo or hakimi or trent? We need a DM, so why arentnwe targeting the next kante? We need a striker, why arent we targeting the next leodowski or benzema?

We have one of the biggest scouting departments in world football, surely that information exists in a database somewhere?!?

Ok, then those players who ignored instruction need to dumped in the reserves or sold. Who cares who they are. How long are players going to throw managers under the bus by not listening to instruction?!?

If he loses vs Liverpool he should walk

Not good enough
So after losing dramatically to two midtable teams, you think it would be utterly unacceptable and the final straw if United also lost to one of the world's best teams?

Right.
Erik Ten Hag is in a difficult position feel for him next game against liverpool which will be an loss and then the panic will come and the fans will be screaming for Poch
No-one sane would be screaming for Pochettino. white text

Need to stick to his principles and move out as many as he can in this window and the next. If he lets players stay or doesn’t get in new players he and we know he will be sacked. Move them on for peanuts like SAF did. Doesn’t matter. It’s about moving quickly. If he doesn’t have the control over transfers to achieve this he needs to verbally be more critical of the club in this regard…and remain true to his coaching role. Everyone knows the bigger issues. He may well be sacked but longer term he won’t suffer due to this job.

I've never felt so sorry for a manager in my entire life. I can genuinely feel the disappointment and bitterness of Ten Hag, who is used to completely different standards and now has to deal with levels of mediocrity from his team. He absolutely didn't expect and still can't believe he is witnessing them.

Dear Erik, what to say… You’ve done great things at Ajax. What made you think you could change United? How much you try you can't get Rolls-Royce like performance from a normal car... United lost vision on it’s core business a couple of years before Fergie left the club. One of the most beautiful clubs on earth has been destroyed by greed...

Please play Garnacho, Garner,Tyrell and Varane. I can't bear to watch Rashford, Bruno, Maguire and Shaw anymore.

I like this, no more pat in the back for that bunch of losers. The risk is the players turning on him, but who the feck cares? I don't think anyone can back the players at this point. Feck them all, I support Ten Hag more than any player from the current squad.

He will soon see how important physicality is in this league, its an adjustment Pep had to come to terms with and Klopp to a lesser extent.

At the moment we are one of the leadt physically imposing teams, and its a big reason why Mctominay finds himself in the team most weeks. As much as Pep loves technical players he made sure his team had the pace and power at the back with the addition of Walker. He also added Dias who is very physical in his duels. All the top teams have that physicality and Arsenal have added that in the last two years with Gabriel, Saliba, Partey and Tomiyasu.

We're just going to be the version of Wenger's arsenal from 2009-2014 where if you got physical with them they'd crumble. That's been the story of our first two games. Hopefully after this season we can rectify that because a team with Sancho, Fred, DDG, Maguire, Bruno, Eriksen, Martinez and Ronaldo starting is too weak and unathletic.

It will take time. They've spent a decent amount recently but, like I said, there starting from much further back. And their team consists of some very young players. We'll have to see how it goes.
Exactly. When we have the sense to see what they went through and how they have improved,
why can't we see that for us ? They haven't played a CL game for years. Yet, players are joining them , they haven't been relegated, Arteta isn't sacked yet.

The problem is not just the structure, its also the people occupying the positions. We let go Chief scouts and the head negotiator just before the transfer window and have not brought in the replacement. Whose brilliant idea was to wait this long? Naturally, the new manager will not trust the current people when the DoF himself has fired the leaders. Also, the current scouting team doesn’t really cover itself in glory with the past performance. You can have the right structures in place but without competent people, they won’t work.
The DoF is happy to go with the manager’s recommendations and that is a big problem. Its a convenient way to solve the problem of the current transfer window by putting all the accountability and responsibility of identifying targets on the manager.

Why do we need to know they have been made to train today? Like we will all feel better knowing that they have been punished, and excited that they will now suddenly start playing properly as they know there will be consequences if they don't.

Just do it, and keep quiet about it. All we want to see are the benefits it is supposed to have.

I would make a couple of changes at least.

Malacia in, Shaw vage tillout
Varane in, Maguire out
I'd change the goalie too but we have no proper backup at the moment.

Whatever team he puts out there will get crushed 3 to 4 nil, but the rebuild has to start somewhere.

Carrying on with last season's broken 1st team for too much longer will cause the pressure to rise to boiling point.

That much is quite fair I would save Zidane and Savage till after the liverpool game. I just don't want them to be mistakenly associated with this squad.

It's most likely this is down to journalists doing their jobs and finding out information. Not everything out in the world about United.is volunteered by the club.

If the players really wanted Poch, not Erik, then that has 'Sod it. We'll get rid of this one next' vibes to it.
