I'm wondering if the 3 subs at 90 minutes was a message to the 3 players who went off. "I gave you 90 minutes and you were shit. Bring on the kids. They couldn't do any worse and may actually play for the shirt."
You sacrifice the very first game of the season with your new team just to give 90 mins to the shite players instead of giving, say, 70 minutes?

And we don't have this sadly. Maguire himself gets deeply affected when things are going wrong, so how can he help? It's a real big problem. Think we need to not only target players for their technical ability, but also some hard arsed mentality as well.
The problem is that we're in a vicious circle. The negativity from outside is overwhelming. Everytime something goes wrong, it's a big deal. I'm not sure what we can do. Maybe the players should avoid all media in every form and watch tennis/cricket instead?:D

Seriously, it's a big big issue.

Yeah, very true, the cycle is a difficult one to stop, especially with the Glazers in charge and the limited experience upstairs/behind the scenes.

DDG and Maguire are not captains, Ronnie has the experience but has decided United are lightyears away so wants out, Bruno is not the right mustard either.

For me ETH has to be seen as bulletproof for the next 3 years, he has the experience and it might take him a full season to see the full picture.

I fear he will regret wasting so much time chasing Frankie, but then the manager can't put out every fire at once especially when he has only been here a few months.

Hard to see a silver lining at the moment but its never boring at least.

If he had selected the likes of Iqbal/Garner/Hannibal/Garnacho and we had lost to Brighton, I wouldn't have been overly concerned as these guys can grow and develop as the season progresses and the loss would have benefited them in the long run.

The fact that he thinks McTominay is a PL standard midfielder let alone a Man United standard midfielder is really disillusioning. Fred is blatantly a b2b and he played him as a 6. Playing Eriksen as false 9 was bizzare. And while Varane has been even more spectacularly useless for us than Maguire, it is blatantly clear that a Maguire-Martinez partnership is slower than treacle. We were torn apart by a team with no pace up front: imagine those two guys facing up against the Liverpool front line.

I believe in giving the guy time, but he needs to cop on with his selection decisions at the very least if he is to keep the faith of the fans.

I’m pretty certain EtH is going to be successful here. He seems to have all the tools necessary. However, I must say today’s performance worries me somewhat. He has had two months to implement his style and still we see the same old issues: no team pressing, wingers afraid to take on their man, no runs in behind the defence, no running off the ball, no quick passing triangles, a midfield being completely dominated, a lack of creativity in the final third, huge gaps between defence and offence when both attacking and defending.

These things shouldn’t be rocket science to implement. Tell your wingers to run at the fullback at every chance. If he doesn’t, sub him off. Instruct your midfielders to push up when the attackers start pressing. If they don’t, sub them off.

It’s obviously still early days and I’m very optimistic about the EtH-appointment but he’s got to do better.

His list at the start of summer was:
Timber
FdJ
Antony
Eriksen
Nunez

Look what we’ve ended up with and are reportedly bidding for in Arnautovich. Shite.

You honestly can't be serious with this comment?

We've released a bunch of senior players and freed up a serious amount of cash on wages and only bought 2 players with transfer fees attached and 1 other in terms of a wage. Where is the rest of the transfer kitty gone?

We were willing to give Barca 75m with the bulk of it up front to assist with paying off the monies owed to FDJ.

I'm sorry but its absolutely disgraceful we are linked with him for a litany of reasons. He's nowhere near good enough, he's racist and over the hill!

Ah I see...you have given up on Frankie and put that transfer money back in the jar.

I don't think ETH has and I don't think the club has either...hence the funds remaining are only stretching for a cheap CF buy.

So yeah I was serious!

Concerning how poor we were today. Nobody expected miracles but that first half was just as bad as anything we served up last season. And the second half, while better than the first, wasn't very impressive either.

Looked like nothing had changed today.

FDJ isn't happening.

So ETH has decided in his infinite wisdom to destroy his first transfer window and hold up rebuild for one player, that will not happen.

By all means keep a small budget for a CF, Arnautovic is not that CF.

It is insane to see folks support this.

He is a great manager and needs lots of time, but he starts to make mistakes quite early
Every manager makes mistakes. Pep made plenty especially in his first season at City and Klopp had his fair share too. It's about learning from mistakes. Nobody should've been expecting us to come out of the gates flying, I know some fans don't like to hear it but the fact is we're in a transition period and it's going to take some patience for ten Hag to implement his ideas. He's trying to revamp how we play and of course to change the mentality of the squad after an atrocious season. It was never going to happen overnight.

I feel for the guy, he's come here with a big reputation, other managers have had big transfer budgets and he's not had the same so far. He needs time and the fans support, we can't keep sacking managers. It's the players that are clearly the issue here.

Seriously, we don't have the funds or the craziness of Barcelona to do this. Plus we needed to have a proper structure in place for scouting transfers etc - which we only seem to be addressing now. Barcelona at least have some semblance of that even in all their shite ness. We have a ways to go.
Half of Barcelona's scouting was "who at Chelsea is out of contract soon?"

Currently, his de Jong or bust stance is an incredible mistake. Then his attacking pursuits have let a lot to be desired. The way he went after Ajax players so late, he should have known their stance.
Who exactly is this Ajax players ?

And what do you know about FDJ or not stance ? What if there is a guarantee that he will join us when the dues are cleared ?

So not exactly lot of mistakes? 2 transfer issues which isn't even connected to today's game.

Ok thanks !!

Ofcourse , why would a fan care about an young player's confidence , right ?

Exactly. Here is the bad news - it's going to get worse before it gets better. So people can continue their moaning for another couple of months.

Erik, I think you are a good coach and might be able to help us be relevant again. I’m going to give you an advice, McFred is shite. Don’t go with McFred, they will cost you your job. Don’t do the same mistake as other managers. They are below average, they do not know how to control the midfield, they misplace passes, they don’t track back well, they are poor, they mean well, but they are not good enough. I hope you see this early on.

Some of you lot need to chill. ETH is brilliant. He needs a few years. I can absolutely remember Klopp’s/Peps first few seasons.

In Pep’s case a 4th place finish followed up by a league title in his second season. Not the best example to use. Everyone would bite your hand off for that to be the case with ETH.

The strange thing is that he appears to have complete control over our transfer policy despite not doing the role at ajax and potentially not being very good at it

The thing is even in Klopps first season they were scoring multiple goals with free flowing football even in losses. He then went and got van dijk and Alison to shore up that defense to bring them to title contention. I hope today is a one off because ten Hag got taken to the cleaners by Potter.

It's interesting that so many were dismissive of potters abilities to do the United job over the summer

Completely agree. The selection was absolutely appalling. But what worried me the most was the fact that we were 0-2 down and he looked completely out of his depth. Like he actually had no clue what to do. A lot of Ajax fans warned there's never a plan B with him. How on earth he didn't take Garnacho in instead of Rashford?

Even Barcelona, a team even worse than us regarding situation, had improved their side like crazy after this summer. Why is it only Manchester United that needs 4-5 windows to supposedly "transform" our side?

Because Utd dont have levers...Utd have glazers. Both are equally bad btw

If ten Hag gives the ok for Arnautovic in the next few days, he is starting life from a VERY bad page for me.

If he can't identify a player better than Arnautovic, I have serious trust problems.

Arnautovic may be an ok to decent footballer 5 years ago, but he was not a Manchester United player then, and is certainly not now.

Ralf weren't far off when he said this team needed ten (5/6 first XI and 4 squad players)
I actually can't believe we're on the brink of using another season to confirm what we already knew about some of these garbagemen. I had hoped our football department who actually witnessed last season would take the clean slate option off the table for more than one or two of them, then the manager could give it a honest go with what was left. Instead Murtough opened the transfer window by saying there was nothing wrong with the team and there would be little significant changes since we finished second recently. With the Director that deluded ETH would essentially have had to rock the boat if he even wanted to condemn portions of the squad. I do think it was naivete on his part to leave the midfield unimproved. If you've seen us you know FDJ isn't the only player that can improve on Mctominay. It's a very low bar.

I am kinda confused with all, its not his fault, he is not a wizzard, recruitment this that, people feeling sorry for him, didnt get his targets etc.

He decided to give them clean slate, to form his own opinions about those cnuts while ignoring experience of others with them for the past X years. He is the one deciding who is in first team squad.

You dont have to be a genius to lose in such manner today, hell put some hungry kids on low wages willing to bite out there and at least you might see some fight, quality would be lacking sure but so what, we have no use of seniors quality either way.

Play the kids. Can’t be a worse watch than what we have now. We’ll finish 12th but who cares. We ain’t finishing top 4 with this lot and at least ETH can start molding the team the way he wants. It’s at least 2 more windows to sort out this mess of a squad.

I don't blame him much as he still has to play with this squad but am a bit miffed he still went with McFred.

I do think though it's a blessing he saw this so early in a competitive game so knows he has to change shit. The pre season and training must have given him false confidence

Currently, his de Jong or bust stance is an incredible mistake. Then his attacking pursuits have let a lot to be desired. The way he went after Ajax players so late, he should have known their stance.
I'm not so sure it is a mistake or whether it's a test of how well he will be supported. I'm not sure yet but in terms of the players on the park, I can't believe he wouldn't have been crystal clear about his expectations of them.

I know it's early doors etc but this doesn't look good. Forget who says it above but, yeah, a bit of tough nut mentality would be beneficial imo. The Reds might cops some reds but we're giving up and wilting.

No one is absolving him. The position that recruitment should never have been left to the manager alone inherently admits the manager's efforts weren't good enough. If our football department weren't somehow even more inexperienced he might have walked into better guidance. To make matters worse they didn't even put up a scouting structure to compensate their inexperience. ETH who never led recruitment at Ajax was the most clued in football person at the club. A terribly unqualified outfit. This comes only several years after LVG complained about not having football people to help him with recruitment in his time here.

Next game will show what Manager he is. Go with mcfred in midfield again and he will burn more goodwill.

i’m not sure that it’s really his ‘choice’ but more a tried/trusted pairing that is used to the league.

He was clearly not happy though and changed it pretty quickly. I have to say I liked Eriksen in the 6 role.

Using him as a striker just didn’t work at all, I hope that’s the last we see of that.

This is a very weird take on. I mean whether it is on him or not, there was no other way to do it. He couldn't even get more than two first team players. The club does not back him to the point that he wants to sack 15 players from the squad.

I thought it'd be impossible for Erik to squander all the goodwill he's got, at least not within the first 18 months.

But if we turn out vs Brentford and I see McFred, Rashford and Arnautovic on the team sheet... a lot of goodwill is going to evaporate.

It was the same with Jose too.

Now to be absolutely fair, Timber got spooked by LVG and Frenkie is on Barca.

But the other 2 are obtainable if we actually spend money we fecking clearly have but aren’t allowed to spend for some reason.

Shite owners who may finally see an absolute revolt against them for a period longer than a few weeks this season.
