Just watching that vid of the first match and you can see evidently what he is trying to implement and it looks great, one thing I did notice though is out of all the players, McTominay was the one who struggles most with quick fluid passing, he needs more touches than everybody else, every time.

Yea and think this was always going to be the case...... Fortunately I think FDJ will replace Mctom and that is a huge huge upgrade

I’m curious as to peoples views as to where we can realistically go this season?

I’ll start with the positives.
Two years ago we finished second, we added Varane, Sancho and Ronaldo.
The whole squad bar Ronaldo and De Gea under achieved so we know we can with a highly rated manager do better.
This squad on paper should have been too 4 no doubt, but the midfield was weak and the defence crumbled.

We if the media are to be believed are adding De Jong, Martinez and Erickson. All strong additions who are (all bar Erickson) an upgrade on what we have. If Varane, Sancho, Rashford and Martial play like they should and we keep Ronaldo, our attack should be 1 million times better.
Our midfield should be competitive and hopefully Erik can get a tune out of VDB as he did before too when the whole of Europe wanted him.

Now the negatives, Man City, Liverpool and Spurs, maybe even Arsenal have all vastly improved.

Can we make up the ground?

75 league goals, and 40 or less conceded. That should be the goal of this season.

Follow that up by scoring 80+ league goals and 35 or less conceded the season after.

If he misses out on those goals, we need to look on the underlying figures (xG etc) to see where the issue was and if ETH is capable of resolving them.

Very interesting how we are setting up when in possession. Although it is a 4-2-3-1 starting formation, we line up nothing like that when we have the ball. It is more of a 3-4-3 with Fred dropping down into defence and McTominay moving up next to Fernandes.
Heaton

Maguire Lindelöf Fred

Dalot McTominay Fernandes Shaw

Sancho Martial Elanga

It is easy to see where both Eriksen and De Jong would fit in to this system with them coming in and replacing McTominay and Fred.

Needs to make quick decisions over some players who are just too poor technically.

We probably aren't catching City and Liverpool this year but everyone else should be within reach. I'd be delighted with 80 points and not going out to any weak teams in the cups.

Once the football is enjoyable. That's the most important thing.

Correct. The fans that would repeatedly berate anyone after a win despite us playing like crap did my head in. I watch football to enjoy the performance. If I just cared about results I would just check the results. With the players and resources we have, if we are playing good, enjoyable football then we will do well. We aren't the minnows of the league who play good football but can't afford a top striker to convert their chances etc.

Most notable thing is that he got the lads happy, they seem to be genuinely enjoying their football again

I suspect he wont mess around with systems and stick to one which will ultimately suit the players more. All this changing between systems per game doesnt help and we dont see many top teams do that.

Also nice to see us using the wings and byline for cut backs. So many goals to be had by doing that and the overlaps.

One thing about his system is that the defending is so collective. Barely seen any post about "We need a defensive midfielder" despite playing without one. Hell we played two kids at the double pivot and looked balance. Still preseason though

Really great to see that it's only pre-season and you can already see some of the things that made his Ajax side so good. We play with width, we are compact, we press well.

That being said, we often have looked pretty good in pre-season to then play complete shite during the season. I hope this time is different.

Think we will have to be patient this season, there are going to be games as we go along getting to grips of EtH's style where we will have lots of possession and potentially struggle to break teams down. Especially if do not get De Jong. So the fans will have to be patient.

Pressing is the big thing. We pressed under Ralf for about 5-6 games and dominated the opposition because of it up until the hour mark then fell away. Keep that up for 90 minutes and we are on to something

He has installed patience into the team. We'll have to see if that continues on to when there are 70k in OT yelling attack attack attack, but by and large you can see the players happy enough to recycle and probe and keep that over and over again - very City-ish.

Reason why Guardiola can play a CM and two AMs in midfield and still be solid.

We've not played anyone good or anyone going at the pace we will face in the PL. Its nice to see the players starting to adapt to EtH but this is very early stage and when pressured under full PL pace and quality we won't find it so easy.

I don't know how it will turn out but I trust EtH to get the players he needs in the positions he needs to make it work. I think he will be surprised, like many managers, just how relentless the PL pace and physicality is and it takes a good while to be able to play a high energy game consistently. Klopp found this in his early days in the league but adapted and worked out how to adapt.

Also love how he shouted at Elanga (im certain it was him to Elanga) to basically run to create space for Shaw when Shaw had the ball in the first half. Elanga was just waiting on the wings, but yes, moving would allow Shaw to run into the space and also have a better attack minded option with the pass.

He looks vocal and proactive which is something we havent had. All our managers post fergie have been really reactive

Hes got the team heading in the right direction and I think he will promote Iqbal and Savage to first team starters even if we get FDJ. You can see as plain as night and day what good coaching and tactics drilled into the players bring. I still think we will struggle against some teams early in the season, but improvement every game will see us midseason and second half click all over the pitch. Just needs repetition and concentration, on how TH wants the team to play.

Absolutely.

He deserves time and patience as it's obvious he's a really talented manager.

We'll be waiting a while for that one.

Even in some of those 60 minute press games we did enough to be out of sight by the time we were gassed.

It’ll take time obviously but the first two games we’ve created so many opportunities by forcing the opposition into mistakes.

Makes things a lot easier when you’ve been gifted a goal or two and aren’t solely relying on breaking a low block down.

2-3 weeks of training and what do you know, we have clear patterns of play, movement off the ball in possession, a calm build up, patient play on the ball.... Who would have thought that a proper coach could actually make them play like a real football club??

Think ten Hag is definitely training us down the right side. Against Melbourne today everything happened down the right whereas under previous managers we’ve been so predictable because everything normally happens down the left. I like it though we need to become unpredictable.

Rubbish, Ole was on the path to greatness the club just failed to give him what he asked for. He was going to turn Rice, McGinn and Longstaff into the next Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta.

Probably just because Sancho played there and he was the best player.

I think it was down to Sancho & Dalot just being better than their counterparts on the left.

I highly doubt we'll plan to attack down one side alone.

Funny how Ole spent 50m on AWB to loan out Dalot and then both Ralf and Ten Hag instantly bench/want to sell AWB and actually seem to like Dalot

Reminds me of Van Gaals first preseason. We looked great I was super excited for the season, then the real football started, and we all know how that panned out. So I don’t think I’ll get excited just now

Ole was playing 4D chess. He paid that money for AWB because he knew it would lead to Dalot becoming the greatest right back in the world in 3 years time.

What's up with jackets in the middle of July.
