I have stopped watching United - I watch the U18 and the reserves (if they ever show their matches) - and then I watch highlights. Why should I waste 90 minutes - get mad and frustrated knowing we will lose anyway.

Don’t think this is the case at all…

It all completely depends on the football structure. And it is clear that United have never had a technical football structure responsible for player identification.

Murtoughs role has been to secure the targets identified by the manager. And he has clearly secured the majority of them…

These are Ten Hags targets… hence all the Dutch connections. And they aren’t good enough. Neither are his tactics.

Ten Hags only period of consistent performance is when he didn’t have his squad, and was forced to play a style he didn’t want to play.

The more influence had has had, the worse we look. He needs to go. Just isn’t up to the job.
You are miss representing Murtoughs role. Better you go and read and educate yourself. The lack of plan from Murtough is why we ended up with certain targets

Football is a game and he is shite at playing it. It's really as simple as that. He can't set us up to win a game. If this were chess, he would be the type to get checkmated within 4 moves.

Last week he said something like , "we are a hard team to score againist."

I said what??

I did say give it time until December, times up. I don't care about the injuries, our attackers are not and we're toothless upfront.

He's clueless

Don’t worry. Once Lisandro returns from his injury, and we finally buy De Jong, ETH will be able to outclass Moyes.

But what about 2024 being a leap year? Surely you can't expect Erik to do anything in a leap year

This system will finish him if he sticks with it. I don't understand how it's supposed to work even in theory.

Continuing to play Scott McTominay as a false midfielder in every game in the vain hope that he might get a touch in the opposition box at some point is insanity. Might be one of the bigger reasons our strikers never see the ball, as well.

I’d take Ole back in a heartbeat. That’s how dire things currently are.

Too all those suggesting injuries have cost us, it’s not the defeats that bother me, it’s the complete lack of purpose in our attacking play apart from a few isolated passages. No professional top-tier team should be this bad

Said the same the other week, he'd happily take over until the summer I'm sure.

He wouldn't do any worse than this in the short term.

The manager isn’t the problem. Talk about rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

The manager is a big big problem. If we can blame the club for it's horrendous structure and recruitment well then it's entirely possible that they're also hiring totally incompetent managers also.

Nah

Don’t get me wrong the Glazers can get fecked and have been our main reason for failure but he’s been backed and you could argue every single signing has been poor

I’m not having that no manager in world football given 400m couldn’t improve us that’s rubbish.
The entire point of the article was about the dereliction of duty by the Glazers and John Murtough. There's not a manager in world football that would ever be given that amount of money to spend on his own targets. They don't know every player that could suit their desired system and defer to the scouts and Director of Football. Every other club has an expert recruitment and scouting structure to identify the areas we're weak in and to shortlist the best targets. We have none of that.

Any manager we appoint will eventually fail if we keep doing what we're doing.

Whatever way youl slice it, he can't be getting away for too long with these defeats. We don't even know what we are doing when we attack.

It's a sorry state of affairs when a team like West Ham has by far a better front 3 than us.

I reckon there's at least 12 front 3 in the PL I'd take over ours.

After £400m spent!
Just the front 3? All of their midfield starts for United at the moment. The squad is terrible, we need a major rebuild. We can blame Ten Hag for picking some of those players, but he shouldn't have all that power. With nearly 400m spent in 2 seasons we should have a strong squad but we don't. We have the worse squad from the top 10 teams.

I don't understand his point of playing a striker. Seriously? If you're not going to find a way to get the ball and create chances for your number 9 then what's the point?
My favourite part is blaming Bruno and Rashford for not being able to play in a football based side then finding out Ten Hag hasn’t even been trying to play that way.
It’s a mess.
Imagine playing Mainoo in midfield to progress the ball forward with a ball playing keeper while dropping Varane because he isn’t as good at it only to see Scott be the focal point of the attack playing behind a striker who doesn’t know what movement in the box means.
It’s like demanding the very best race tyres to be put on a Clio

His system is bore the opposition to death by keeping the ball in deep areas, and then lump it forward and hope for a mistake. Absolutely 0 idea how to build through the midfield and control games in dangerous positions. 0 clue how to create chances or play quickly.

He has just failed in the Premier League and the rest have figured out how to stop his tactics, and he hasn't adapted.

This is by far the worst we've looked since 2013. Even under Rangnick, we knew it was end of the season stuff with someone who wouldn't be with us after the summer. Just dire all around. We never looked like being even remotely close to scoring today.

“Injuries eh”. “Looked good in 75 minutes eh”. Shakes head twenty times. “Players are behind me, see Liverpool game eh”. Shakes head. “We are almost there but need goals eh”.

Me, shakes head “Throw in the towel! eh”

How is it “partly” on him? He has been dreadful with his squad building. We will now have more dross when he is inevitably sacked than when he started.
Because as much as you want to put all the blame on him, there are so many other factors too. It’s a culmination of 10 years of mismanagement. He’s a problem but it doesn’t magically get better with someone else.

We need a proper structure above any manager. Does he deserve a chance with that in place? Not so sure, but it’s not all on him.

I agree that should be his role… but the manager has always had final say on players at United.

Onana, eriksen, onana, Antony, Weghorst, Martinez…

It’s blatantly obvious these are Ten Hags men.

Just like Moyes, LVG, Mourinho, and Ole before him.

I’d agree that a technical football department is a more need that a new coach… with a completely different hierarchy around player acquisition.

But the coach is clearly needed too.. ETH has been awful

As much as I believe in Højlund - he will turn out to be the worst signing of the season. What scares me is that we are so poor that he doesn't even look like scoring.
I don't even blame Hojlund, it just highlights that it's stupid to give the likes of Martial so much stick when it literally makes no difference who we play there.

Garnacho isn't ready, Rashford is just an average player but the big problem is Antony. You can't waste a spot in the forward line with a player that has so little threat.

I'd have Dan James as a starter for us over Antony easily.

Its not true but whatever you say. And yes they are Ten Hags men the players you mentioned but you are clearly missing the point on who is responsible for player identification. If u dont identify players then the manager will have to.

We didnt have a plan when ETH was hired in May 2022. We didnt have a plan for the Jan window of 2023. That is on Murtough

It’s just sad the amount of money we’ve flushed down the drain on his players. All because we didn’t have a proper sporting structure at the club and just let him have his way. It’s going to be a tough road back after the incredible damage this guy has done under the watch of the incompetents above him.

If we're being honest, this is the worst team post Fergie, in terms of results and style of play.

Last year we have made some progress results wise, but we've never really played any kind of decent entertaining football. We spent a lot of money in the process, and somehow we look worse.

No top club in europe would tolerate this, but we always do, and it's no wonder we're behind everyone else.

LVG was better than this

Remember that season we scored no goals under him?

We are currently on track to score miles less than that season.

Hell we are currently on track to score less goals than some teams who have got relegated in the past.

It's proper crazy how bad ETH has done this season. Miles worse than any other previous season in the post Fergie era.

We have been quite lucky with the points we have accumulated this season so far, our table position is starting to take on a more realistic look now comparable to performances.

Agreed.

When so many players are playing badly the manager is usually to blame. Who knows, under a better coach even Antony might look a bit more threatening.

And talent. Even during Fergie's worst years we had some standout talent to pin our hopes on, now we don't. Mainoo and Garnacho looks like good but not world class talents yet.
