Actually what happened today disproves the claims of the ETH cult and proves some of ETH out brigade’s points:
  • The players have not downed tools as claimed by the ETH cult.
  • Playing two defensive midfielders made us far more solid, it is something that Et
  • Varane should never have been dropped (ironic that him, Maguire and McTominay have saved EtH’s skin on various occaisons despite EtH trying to get rid of them)

We held on today because we parked the bus. This is not sustainable. We can’t do this every game and we continued to look toothless in attack. The EtH cult celebrating a 0-0 draw or even us simply not being hammered is a mark of low standards have fallen. But I guess we have to be realistic. This is where we are at under EtH’s management…

Wait, the Cult are the ones saying the players have downed tools?

I'm so confused right now.

Its fairly obvious to anyone with half a brain that we look far more compact with two deep lying midfielders as against one. But I fully expect brainwave Erik to start against Villa with Bruno and Mctominay again.

I don't think w
Only disappointment is we didn't get all 3 points. As Virgil said, only one team wanted to win today and if Hojlund could actually finish that team would have taken all 3.

So I'll take a point, begrudgingly seein as it's at Anfield.

I honestly am not sure what reality some people live in. We have had teams so much stronger than the 11 we just put out go to Anfield and not really put up a fight or show much from an attacking perspective. We went there playing our 5th choice CB, pretty much our 5th, 6th and 7th choice midfielders, one of which is 18, a striker who clearly needs time to adapt to the league and a right winger who is clearly out-of his depth from an attacking perspective, at a time when our best attacker in rashford is sulking, our other star left winger is at home playing fifa, we got pretty much a bunch of reserve players on the bench due to these insane injuries, after losing 7 0 there last season, we put in a good defensive display and had probably 2 very good chances to score in Garnacho and Rasmus, yet people are upset we didn't go there and show more attacking intent? Blows my mind.

The feck is this ETH cult shite? It's not a thing and never has been a thing.

Players obviously played the game plan perfectly and are playing for the manger and the team. None of us want to go there and play for a smash and grab but that’s where we are at the minute with injuries and confidence low.

Our defensive set up was excellent.

I do wish he would call out the refs but it seems keeping quiet on refs his thing…frustrating though.

Back to basics is good when you're in a rut, but lets not make out like our performance today was a template we should look to follow in the future.

The point I am making is that 4231 gets the best out of all of our best players.

Best for Shaw as he can get forwards because he is covered. Best for Cas as he has legs around him. Best for Rashford as he can play in the channel and the LB can take a man away. Best for Bruno cos he has a free role and doesn’t have to track back, and therefore doesn’t lose the ball in deep areas. I can’t think of a single good performance playing 4141.

And it can be an exciting formation when on the front foot too… Spurs have played it all season and up until the injuries were playing the most exciting football in the league.

Dalot, varane, (Martinez), Shaw
Mainoo, Cas
Antony, Bruno, rashford
Hojlund

Other than potentially Garnacho for Rashford, and maybe AWB for Dalot in certain games, it is easily our best team.

Yeah, you’re talking a lot of sense here. We need to evolve more slowly into the team EtH wants. We don’t have the players to do it yet. I am coming around to wanting him to be more pragmatic and more patient with his vision.

2 deeper midfielders, they don't have to be pure DM's, just gives the team more stability and structure, which given how fragile they have been has been desperately needed for months now. It was an obvious change to make, and Ten Hag taking so long to see it is very worrying.

People need to remember last season. The first two games he tried to play a style that we just didn’t have the squad for, and we got smashed twice.

And then he pragmatically fell into 4231 due to the squad he had.

But this summer, he has brought in the players he wanted to play a system that simply doesn’t suit us. It was obvious from the minute we signed Mount that he wanted to change the shape.

We simply don’t have the squad to play the system… it exposes a lot of our best players weakness whilst playing to none of their strengths.

He just needs to admit he got it wrong, and go back to 4231… just watch how much it improves Bruno, Cas and Rashford.

I don't even think he has realised that. It'll be back to Bruno as a deeper player with McTominay not doing anything by running ahead and the midfield will be scarificed again.

If he does this… he needs sacking. Simple as that. Everyone and their dog can see what the problem has been.

I will be apoplectic if he goes back to that god awful system.

It is that line of thinking that has me with little sympathy for Ten Hag. No-one has been forcing him to play an idiotic midfield set up, you can't blame it on the players, or owners or pundits, he has stuck to a set up that effectively sabotages the team.

He’s got an opportunity to rethink and re-organise this team for the second half of the season if he manages to get back 5/6 of the injured players without too many others breaking down.

The premier league is in a state, and you’d hope you’ve seen the worst of us and it can only get better.

He has to get them playing some football and he has to find a way to make the attacking unit a threat.

My concern is with or without our so called starting midfielders, I’m not sure we have anything in the centre of the pitch that allows us to kick on.

Liverpool fans angry they couldn't beat ''the worst United team to come to Anfield in living memory'' says it all about this manager. He's done a great job lowering the majority of our fanbase's standards.

Anyone who thinks he's suddenly rediscovered that an actual midfield works is just coping.

Ultimately, they should be. Their team didn't show up today. We were clueless going forward for the most part, and they carved us open so many times yet they just could not finish.

They carved us open? Must’ve missed that.

If you back EtH your part of the cult apparently.
All things considered, a very good point today however, 2 of his signings Antony (yes,he worked hard)and Arambat i thought were terrible.

I'm not EtH out or a cultist, but I can still criticise some things.

Super result. Clean sheet and a point at Anfield is nothing to turn your nose up to. Well done, ETH!

Says more about them than us if you ask me.

He missed most or all of his first choice midfielders today..

I guess I must have missed the midfield getting out played by their's all match and the amount of touches they had in our box, especially at set pieces.
Not sure how that equates to carving us open. Wolves created more against us.

Liverpool had 35 shots against us. Are you joking?

If you count shots that actually made it to goal or the goal line it was more like 20-25. Even Carragher questioned the shots figure as a lot were just pointless kicks that went nowhere or we're pot shots blocked.

How many clear cut chances by being carved open though?… mainly shots from outside the box, from corners, or forced wide in the box

There was one chance in the whole game that came as a result of being “carved open”.

And it was Hojlund hitting straight at Alisson

Also, Liverpool didn't carve us open once. Only twice in the entire game was any defence carved open, when Garnacho was through on goal and Hojlund.

Now I'm sure you didn't watch the game. First you question what Mainoo did over his midfield peers and then you say this.

Even Charrager said don't let the stat fool you, Liverpool were lost and taking pot shots because they didn't know what to do. Their best chances were set piece deliveries, which isn't carving us open.

Lots of fans want this but they're not considering that it's just as likely to make things worse.

I disagree with the bolded bit. Defensively that template should be the bear minimum. There is simply NO reason why we can't be this compact, commited and defensively sound even vs sides we can and should dominate. This season too often we have been laughlably easy to play against. Which is unacceptable.

I'm so confused right now.

The cultists blamed the players for every bad result. Some even suggested that they can’t handle adversity so they downed tools to get the manager out as they can’t handle the discipline and standards he’s trying to impose… or something along those lines. You would know considering that you are the #1 cultist and the official spokesperson for this cult ;)

It is very much a thing. Have a look at all the stan accounts on Twitter for example. Even posters on here that make every excuse under the sun for him while excessively praising “achievements” like simply not getting battered as a mark of progress.

I want Ten Hag to succeed but he did bring in Amrabat. He did bring in Anthony, he did bring in Onana. I can’t see anything I liked about Amrabat, as a PL level you should be able to at least pass a ball.

is it him? Or are those liverpool fans angry because they got use to give us a beating over the last years?

Well that puts me in quite a predicament as on one hand, as the cults official spokesman and mascot I'll always hail the Great Hag but on the other hand, I've been trying to argue that the players clearly haven't downed tools and clearly are playing for the manager.

So much to unpack.

No reason why that shape can't be adopted in any game when you're under pressure for a period of time. A huge problem for this team has been recognising when drop into a more defensive shape to see out difficult periods.

I 100% agree. I hope today was the start of this team understanding such things better.

Only 1 person needs to understand this better and it isn’t the players.

It is the manager.

The players have been following instructions. The reason we have had no midfield, is because the manager has instructed the two 8s to press high, leaving the 6 exposed, as none of the FBs have been stepping into assist consistently.

Today he played a different shape, and they again followed instructions. But this shaped worked

Eric needs to learn this lesson.

No it isn't, don't be so ridiculous.
