He doesn't have all the attributes though does he, not all. He can't head the ball for a start. Mental attributes are just important as physical/ ability attributes.

This.

How can this keep being repeated when he might be the worst header of the ball at the club? You shouldn't be saying that about any centre back, let alone a centre back that some seem to believe has this elite potential. Your centre backs should pretty much always be your best headers of the ball.

It's crazy that he's so poor in the air too, because he's got an outrageous leap and just seems to hang in the air, like Evra used to do. But his timing is terrible, and he seems to duck under the ball with his eyes closed, like a kid who is scared of the ball. It would take some miraculous coaching for that to be trained out of him when he's going to be 25 in a few months.

Are you trolling? Because Ake was being marked by Matic and if any CB was at fault there it was Bailly being drawn out of position when Lingard was dealing with the situation.

Ake was originally marked by Lindelof, Matic picked up Ake only because Lindelof failed, twice. Anyway, Lindelof made up today and put in a MOTM performance, although to a bottom team.

At what phase of play because quite clearly here it shows Matic is covering Ake and is touch close and Lindelof is in his area covering that other player. Matic finds himself there in Baillys area.

During the early phase of the movement, Tournament players made a lot of movement, block Lindelof off and free up Ake.

Rubbish, absolute rubbish. It’s clear there that Matic has now taken responsibility for Ake as Ake is in Baillys territory who doesn’t happen to be there so Matic is the one taking over. Just admit you made the mistake and no one will think any less of it.

You’re making stuff up as you go along, aren’t you?

Go to Youtube 1:18. Bouremouth #3 Cook, pushed Lindelof and freed up #5 Ake, who was free at the 12 yard point. There were 3 united players right in front of DDG. At 1:25 Rest of the Utd defenders rushed out and Matic was the only one near Ake. Not saying Matic was faultless as he wa the only player near Ake so should have marked him tighter. My point was, what happened at 1:18 and before that.

Assume they just ran out of CB's to put in?

And RB's for that matter :smirk:

People love writing off our players then when they have a mini resurgence they're back to drooling over them and pretend they'd never doubted them in the first place.

One would think that at a certain point people would just sit back for a bit and show some patience for once and see how things turn out.

Umm 3 seasons of patience?

One of the most overrated cb ever. Suit midtable club like Villareal more than top teams ,only brawn no brain and he isn't even a good with the ball. Nowadays being fast and aggressive is enough to make people think they are a good player.

Umm, let's see... 3 seasons? The first year he was pretty good which led us to thinking we have a real CB talent in our hands. Last year was a write off. And now we are in his third season and it's only January, which has not been good, but mostly under Mourinho, and one incomplete match under Ole in which he was good and sent off for a challenge you see every day in the PL. I'm not saying it's anything to be proud of, but getting on Bailly's back and acting like he's never showed anything promising here is laughable.

He was good in his first season, last season he started well he was part of back four when were winning every game 4-0 and he scored against Swansea. He's been off form since the middle of last season up until now.

I don't know why people are talking like he's been bad for 3 seasons.

I am not the one wanting him gone but I can understand those who want to. He has been a disaster since he made his come back against liverpool last season. Has shown no signs of any improvement. Our defence is in shambles and we can't really afford any patience.

Mehh, I'd imagine many of these people were the same people writing off Martial and Pogba. I'm starting to just ignore them.

I can't. How can someone want Bailly gone when we have serial chockers like Jones still on our payroll and a useless chap like Rojo stealing a living from us. Bailly on the other hand has shown great defensive talent which I think is worth showing a bit more patience, under a new manager as well.

Agreed 100%. Too many wishy washy fans on here that react to things far too quickly and go along with the lemmings.

It was quite frankly worrying the amount of people that got blinded by Jose. People actually started to hate him and wanted him sold. Some even wanted Mctominay to play instead  it's just mind boggling.

Bailly is a rough diamond and he needs a bit of individual coaching, but he's got the physical talents and reads the game well. He just needs to add some calmness and patience to his game, and he would be top draw.

Of course. Jones, Rojo and Darmian should be moved on even before thinking about Bailly.

Not sure how to treat this. I would say 90% of my posts on him have been negative. Mainly this has been an attempt to add some balance to discussions because so many people seemed blind to the many flaws in his game.

Now it's gone the other way and people act like he has no potential at all. It honestly makes me feel like most supporters haven't a fecking clue and just follow what the crowd is saying.

I still think the same as I always have. He has good personality, incredible, physical abilities, pace, agility etc but he needs a lot of coaching. Whether or not he has the intelligence and focus to learn what he needs to is not something we can know without knowing the player. Most dumb footballers stay dumb footballers. That's up to the managers and coaches to figure out.

Yeah, it's the same in real life. People only see black and white when it's almost all just a shade of grey. Its clear to me and any reasonable poster on here that Bailly has the talent, but there's something going on in other people's minds that won't allow them see this. Its this reactionary mindset that leads to things like Brexit, Trump and of course suggestions of swapping Pogba for Torreira.

All true, but is he going to learn enough without playing often? And can we afford to have a player who has so many gaping holes in his game playing regularly?

I think playing regularly for a lesser team is the way he delivers on any of his potential. He hasnt improved at all in his time at United.

That is the case very often in my opinion as well.

He needs a lot of coaching I agree, I'm especially disappointed with the little progress he has made this past two and a half seasons, since I rate his defensive talent in addition to his obvious physical attributes. He is a very solid tackler and especially good in one on ones. But very often he is rash and does stupid things as you said. Dumb individuals stay dumb individuals, but with proper guiding I think we can make something out of his talent, at least till we get an undisputed world class CB and we get rid of sicknotes like Rojo and Jones.

So my personal solution for what to do with Bailly is we either loan him to a lesser club for a season, or we sell him for a bit cheaper and put in a buyback clause.

Either way we move on and he gets to play regularly and hopefully mature in the areas that need vast improvement, without risking points for Manchester United. If he plays well on loan he can come back and compete for a place with our CBs and see how he does. If he matures at his next club and fixes his problems we can buy him back.

I think either option is better for both him and us, than him staying but only playing a handful of games. I don't think his gaping holes will be fixed on the training pitch. Not when they havent improved in all the time he's already been at the club. He needs to sink or swim somewhere else as a first choice and either something clicks eventually and he becomes a very good defender, or he stays where he's at - a very aggressive, physical, ball winning CB who is extremely rash, poorly positioned, uncomposed, allergic to headers and unreliable. Possibly with fitness concerns on top of that.

Bailly Rojo was the best CB partnership we had after Smalling Blind.

Bailly - Lindelof - Rojo

is Balanced enough to work; has a possible stable head between two rash defenders.

 2 error prone, rash defenders and 2 who dont win headers. Plus Rojo giving the ball away midway in our own half

I've love to play against that defense

However, a flat back 3 covers much less space and literally has to hold there space.

This is something Lindelof does not do - you see him moving around all possible spaces. Bailly is a defender that likes to hold his ground but when asked to moved around different areas can be very rash & clumsy. Rojo is similair but can defintely be improved upon.

It's about giving them less space to conquer and allowing Lindelof to do the moving around.

Im not sure it will work by any means; but it makes their job easier and balances the defence out.

In a back 2 both Bailly and Rojo dont have the ability to hold their ground and a player of the defensive capability of Smalling is much better. Lindelof in a back 2 will get caught out much more because he doesnt stand his ground - and we see this when alot of attackers manage to get the ball in dangerous places in our defensive box (luckily for him these chances have not been taken as of yet; however does not mean that these do not exist)

Koulibaly is good for a back 2, just as much as Smalling or Van Dijk.

But defenders like Lindelof, Bailly, Rojo are better spread across to lay a field of a defence in front of the goal in my opinion than asking them to be able to defend in a back 2 and cover their right, left and centre side of the attack.

I’d have no problem with that but only if we sell deadwood like Jones and Rojo first, and Bailly gets to fill in until we bring a quality CB.

Will be sometime before I can trust him.
Phil Jones is a calmer defender and that is an indictment.
