English & Irish Cricket Summer 2018

Just left The Oval after a very long day!

As an England fan I was delighted with the first session and a bit. Even Jennings looked ‘ok’ until he fell in to India’s trap at leg slip.

It was a shame not to see Cook get to 100 in his last Test but at least he has another chance.

The flurry after that was typical of England, from 130 odd for 1 to where we are now. Must have been something in the pitch that we couldn’t see from the stands and hopefully England can get something out of it too.

Not a whole lot of movement from the pitch. For some reason, the older ball was moving significantly in the air - wasnt even reverse. A lot of swing on otherwise a very dry pitch which looked more like it was in Mumbai than London. Expect turn.

We'll be kicking Ashwin for sure. We're notoriously slow starters on tours. Being 2-0 down was no surprise, however, it was a crime not winning the last test match. Having England 86-6, being 140-2, Ashwins line and length on day 3 - just a shambles. Honestly, I'd have a taken a 3-2 loss at the start of the tour. We dont win many away test matches as with most nations however, we've been woeful on away tours since 2011 so this is great to see.
Blaming ashwin for our series loss is very harsh. He was not great no doubt but we lost the match because of.our batters. I never understand why indian fans after every overseas loss start scapegoating pujara, rahane and ashwin. They are not the problem, we lost because our batsmen failed to bat.

Credit to Dukes. India's bowlers won't like the Kookaburra after using the Dukes.

That pitch was extremely difficult to bat on - in fact, this entire series has been dominated by pitches that feel like land mines. Ashwin was presented with a pitch he'd have encountered many a time back at home yet he managed 3 wickets in comparison to Alis 9. It was awful bowling and now you have Jadeja out bowling on a day 1 Oval pitch.

Yeah, our batsmen haven't been great but neither have the surfaces they've played on. When you look at the runs scored, our middle is in the top 5. So who do you blame when both sets of openers have failed? Their lower middle order can bat, ours has largely failed, albeit Pandyas got a few 30+ scores. Problem is their lower order can bat, ours can survive.

At 2-2 the narrative around this series would be completely different. We should have won the last test match, we were in a golden position even, even in the third innings when Root was run out. Our "golden" spinner cost us with some utterly bemusing bowling.

Our bowlers do love bowling in England. Zaheer, RP Singh, Sreesanth in 2007; Praveen in 2011; Bhuvi and Ishant in 2014 and these guys in 2018.

There is talk about having the Duke balls used in home test matches.

Credit to Ashwin for putting his point across on a forum like this , most cricketers can't take any criticism these days

Ali was exceptional in the second inngins but did you see the wickets he got in the first innings. Ok let us rewind, ali was doing nothing when we were batting and kohli/pujara were just scoring runs for fun then we lose kohli and rahane and then came ali, first pandya gifting him the wicket then pant and then ashwin himself. And then shami playing like he does not care. 4 wickets just like that. Then pujara and ishant started batting sensibly to hom and ali again became ineffective and then eventually got ishant. Fair play to him for getting a fiver but he was far from exceptional and should thank our lower order batsmen.

Now coming to ashwin, he started of really well in the second innings, I would even go on saying better than ali was to our top orders. He troubled cook, jennings, even root and then went on to beating butler and stokes on numerous occasion but to no success and as the match went on, kohli for some reason kept on bowling ashwin when he started to tire he became ineffective. But the constant thing on all this was their batters played him well especially root. No one gave him any free wickets like we did to ali. Fair play to ali for his second innings performance where he bowled exceptionally well.

Now coming to the moot point. Was ashwin disappointing? YES. He could have done better , should have done better.
But did we lose the series because of him? NO.
Was he pathetic ? Again No.

We lost the match because of our batsmen like even ganguly and gavaskar echoed. We also lost because of some strange captaincy by kohli. Why not give ashwin a rest or why kill the combo of jadeja-ashwin. Jadeja ashwin combo would have worked wonders ,.more than pandya or new boy kuldeep.

Middlesex taking Ramprakash would be doing England a big favour right now. A lot of very clouded minds in that batting lineup and I don't think it's an accident that Buttler, Curran and Ali (relatively) have done so well considering they've played IPL or county cricket more often this year. For all the issues around the top 3 I'm more worried that our best batsman keeps getting out in what used to be his strongest area and our 2nd best batsman seems to be batting in protest or something.
Yes agree completely.

I don't disagree with a lot of your points.

I won't agree with your thoughts on Ashwin. He was shit last match.

Does anyone have a link to see what cooks career average and stats were after that india 2012 tour? 23 hundreds in his first 6 years i believe is a record. 9 in the 6 since

Theres been a common pattern in the careers of quite a few of the English batsmen. Most seem to decline significantly after looking superb at their peaks. I might be off the mark but Cook, Bell, Pietersen and Trott all averaged around the 50 mark at their best, but fell away quite a bit by the end. In fact, I'm certain Trott was close to 60s at one point. Now, more recently, Joe Root seems to be following that pattern too.

M Ali looks distinctly uncomfortable playing the number 3 role. Completely goes contrary to his natural playing instinct. They'll make a mess of his batting.

Could be down to the crazy amount of test cricket they play. 7-8 tests every summer and then two challenging away series' every winter. It's mentally draining.

In August 2013, Jonathan Trott felt so tormented by cricket that, as a way of avoiding another day of a Test against Australia at The Oval, he thought of some distressing ways to escape. “Just briefly,” he explains, “I considered driving my car into the Thames or into a tree. That way I could get out of the ordeal.”

This was a Test in which Trott scored 99 runs – 40 in the first innings and 59 in the second. The game was drawn and England sealed a 3-0 series win to retain the Ashes. It should have been another high point in Trott’s impressive career and yet, as his new book reveals, that game was a dark marker in his unravelling.

“You want to find a way to avoid going to the ground,” Trott says. “You hope the covers have leaked overnight – or you hope for rain. But it got bad and, as soon as I put my tracksuit on, it was like a trigger. I was going back into that arena, that pressure cooker, that place of judgment.”

Trott was the Cricketing equivalent of LvG. He tormented my mind and put me off watching Cricket whilst he was at the crease.

Another lower order partnership yay.

Whats the England? We're on top and could possible win? Well, here have some freebies and we'll let your 9, 10 and 11 get around 100 runs.

50 for Buttler, could be a contender for Player of the Series
Buttler, or one of the bowlers for England. Overall Virat wins the man of the series. Bowlers have dominated the series which makes Virat's performances phenomenal.

It’s where this series has been won and lost
England’s 7-11 have averaged 30
India’s 7-11 have averaged 11

India bowled well, but the tactics were weird toward the end. Seemed there was no pressure on the batsmen at all. Buttler could get a single any time he wanted.

Surely it's time to move Buttler up a place or two in the order. It was right to start him at 7 but he's too good to stay there.

I'd move Stokes to 5 and Buttler to 6, dropping Barstow to 7 and allowing him to keep the gloves.

Horrible, just horrible. We deserve to lose this and the series 4-1 for our sheer stupidity across this tour.

Making this ordinary England side look great. The thing indian cricket always love to do.

I don't know a fat lot about cricket but why wasn't that guy out after the review:confused:

India getting away with a few here.

That was always at least clipping the stumps so they wouldn't have lost the review. Not sure why they didn't go upstairs.

Well he's certainly had plenty of that.

He'd still have made big runs anyway, I'm not saying anything against that.

I think the review system highlights a lot of these close calls more than what we're used. For example, that Kohli decision from the last match enraged so many; 10 years ago, it'd have been forgotten almost straight away.
