English & Irish Cricket Summer 2018

Who was the part time left armer who bowled decently in Ashes? Was it Malan or Stoneman?

Not sure who you mean, I think Malan was the only part-timer to get a bowl in the ashes for England, but he bowls leggies

Good day for India. Pitch looks like a standard English pitch. Little bit of movement off the pitch, no real turn but decent for batting. Two days of heat and sun should help flatten the pitch. Looks for India.

I’ve never seen more of a competitor in cricket than Kohli. Maybe Shane Warne is up there too, but Kohli wants it so bad.

It wouldn’t be England without a trademark collapse. Pure stupidity getting a run-out in test match cricket

They all want it bad. Just throwing your arms around and shouting doesn't mean you want it any more than anyone else.

Can't see Sam Curran being a test bowler.

If he can improve his batting slightly he could be an understudy to Stokes, batting at six and bowling some fill-in overs, but he bowls at extremely gentle pace and he isn't tall enough to get bounce.

Curran's an odd one. Yeah he's taken 100 FC wickets at 20 odd before he is 21, but does anyone watching him really think he's doing anything particularly special – or is he simply a fairly bog standard swing bowler?

Might as well get old man Darren Stevens in if we're going to start picking trundlers.

Edit: See KM, I can do jinx's too.

feck off

I'd like to see us stick with Curran purely for the change of angle and the amount of left-handers knocking about. He's never likely to be lightning quick but he's not exactly slow. Chaminda Vaas wasn't very quick and he did ok.

Speaking of pace though, i watched Jamie Overton bowl a spell the other week that was seriously rapid. If he stays fit he could be an option down the line.

So indian batsmen are deciding to make a star out of another ordinary bowler, not a surprise. Some pathetic shot selections. This is why I don't like fitting t20 mentality players in test matches.

I know dhawan needs replacing in test but I also think we need to look at vijay's performance. We can definitely improve on him too. Hopefully he proves me wrong and does well in this test series but definitely if he fails he needs replacing too.

No worries, i said the same thing.

Still don't see it with him. He might have days like this in English conditions but he'll get hammered when there's no swing. Obviously hope he produces this kind of form consistently but don't see it.

Best chance is as a batting all-rounder imo.

Tbh, despite taking wickets I still don't think he bowled that well. He was swining it from the hand at a gentle pace, if that takes you wickets in international cricket then it says more about the quality of the batsmen than it does Curran.

True. Philander's only about 78mph as well. They're very much the exception to the rule though aren't they. Plus both were hugely skilful and found ways to be effective.

He's also got novelty factor. That's wearing off with every ball he bowls.

Yeah, Curran will need to learn some variations.

I underastand Philander used to be a bit nippier but has had a couple of bad injuries.

Dreadful by Rahane. Like England, the majority of Indian players have thrown their wicket. Two mediocre sides.

Rahane and Pujara need to be dropped for an entire series. They're simply included on reputation these days.

Their dad was a good player too - Zimbabwe, Gloucs & Northants.

India are the number one ranked side in the world.
Hasn't really been a clear number one test side since South Africa a few years ago.

Thought India might take over but they've lacked the overall consistency and the success away from home that South Africa had. Best of a weak bunch at the moment.

And that one. As if Malan's batting wasn't bad enough.
Yeah not exactly covering himself in glory is he. Didn't make any runs and dropped their best player twice.

He's got to make runs second time round. Averaging 29 after 14 tests isn't good enough.

Fully agree on their not being an obvious number one however think that is due to the gap between the teams being closer and there being no dominant team (e.g Australia. WI) rather than a bad bunch. The away form of all teams seems to be an issue in tests though.

Anyone who has a season of home matches reaches the number one position.

Not sure what changes should we look for in the second test to be honest. Our bowlers did their job.
