English & Irish Cricket Summer 2018

What an innings from Kohli! One of the best ive ever seen.

I don't watch cricket regularly enough but is Stokes a good bowler? Last time I remember watching him was that final a couple of years back where he bowled balls that allowed the West Indies player to hit like 3 sixes in a row.

Seems to be the go to guy when England need a wicket, but he is no Freddy

I know this last partnership involves Kohli so it's a little different to normal but Englands record for getting the final wicket of an innings is fecking appalling.

We consistently fail to get the last wicket quickly and end up losing all momentum. It's so frustrating.

Along with record of collapsing after being in a great position.

What a shot from kohli! If India takes a lead im going to laugh myself silly

What a fecking innings. Just a lead of 13 from England. Great stuff.

Well, we all know Virat is one of this generations great.

Kohli... Not a fan of him as a captain, but as a batsman he is unbelievable. Incredible innings

The last wicket partnership was the highest of the innings...

Root is a reactive captain. Just got the job due to his batting.

Kohli is the Cristiano Ronaldo of cricket. Both make you cringe with their behavior but both leave you awestruck with their talent.

I'm sure there'll be knee-jerk reactions to that, but Ashwin has bowled Cook two absolute beauties to get him out in this test.

Wow what a captains performance by Kohli. I don't want to jump on the bandwagon and write Cook off, but he's had a terrible start to this series and if he doesn't pick up you have to ask serious questions. Such an awkward problem.

I kid you not, I thought to myself, in the previous ball, that it would be ridiculous if Ashwin bowled that ball again and he did exactly that. Incredible.

Funnily Ronaldo is his sporting hero too.

Glad Kohli got that monkey off his back, he's a generational batsman with a competitive streak that the entire England batting line-up should take note of. Test cricket is not always about being in great nick, he grinded out the tough part and cashed in at the end.

The less said about England the better, it's evenly poised but they should have scored 400+ and knocked over India for 150, they should be out of sight already. Slips should always be Stokes, Root, Anderson, Buttler. Cook has shelled quite a few in recent times and need to move to mid-off or mid-on. In a few years we'll all wonder how on earth Dawid Malan played 15 tests off the back of a decent T20 knock (surely that's more of a slap in the face for County Cricket than the Rashid selection but I digress). On the plus side Joe Clarke has been with the team this test and looks the likely next cab off the rank.

Got the uneasy feeling England will be knocked over for 150 odd, which will vex me even more than usual if it does happen because I have tickets to day 4.

Someone said earlier that having Ashwin is crucial with all the English lefties. Cook can testify.

England need to find a competent opener to bat next him first before they can even entertain dropping him.

Played 6 test matches and that was his 6th score of 10 or less and his avg is under 20. Obviously they never going to drop him.
England could do with more right handers in their line up, Ashwin avg vs right handers is 31 and Vs Left handers is 19

Root is a reactive captain. Just got the job due to his batting.

Well he didn't get it because of any empirical evidence that he was a great captain because he'd basically never captained before.

There is a long held theory that bowlers don't make good captains because they can't be objective about their bowling and they get too hemmed up in their own bowling to make clear decisions about field placements, bowling changes, tactics etc. etc. Such a theory informs why Broad and Anderson and to a lesser extent Stokes did not get much consideration at the time for the job. And in terms of constants in the batting order you were only left with Cook, the incumbent, and Root. So Root got the job.

Unfortunately for Root, unlike say Mike Brearley who had 5 years of doing nothing much special at Middlesex as captain before 1976 where he won the County Championship and got the England job, he's having to learn on the fly in the most difficult arena of them all. There's not much a captain can do about rubbish calls for 2nd runs and dropped catches other than tell his players not to do these things.

It's bloody brave to have Burns, Jennings and whoever comes in at 4 for Malan learning their craft at the same time but it might have to done by the end of this series. The England batting lineup is all over the place with the exception of Root and Bairstow.

Cook was in good nick for England in the warm up game and has been done over by 2 good balls here. Malan unless he gets a big score in this innings needs to go and we need a right hander in there like Burns. The rest of the batting is ok for now, it seems to be more of a mental thing that when the pressure is on or wickets are tumbling they can't handle it.

Burns is a left hander. I'd have had him at 3 and moved Root to 4 for this test, never mind the next one.
