Just tuned in to the game. What happened to England, I thought the pitch was meant to be ok for batting today?

It's seaming, not swinging, although England seem to be getting it to talk a bit through the air right now. And England are bad at batting.
Is the time away from Test cricket what's affecting Warner so badly?

He hasn't been that great since coming back. Even in this year's IPL he looked rusty even though he scored some good runs. Then in WC also he didn't look that great. He is much better than this and maybe it's only matter of time before we see the old ruthless Warner back.

England’s batting is a shambles, the top order is even more shite than those of the 80’s & 90’s. But who do they pick in Godsname at the top of the order? Desperate times call for desperate meassurea.
Root's going to have to bowl Leach all day and rotate the pace bowlers otherwise he's just going to break them down.
The top order of the 90s was much, much better than the one we have now. Atherton, Stewart, Hussain or Thorpe would walk into the current team.You don't mean...?!
Don't forget that every other team had at least one high-class bowler back then, so there was nowhere to hide. England had good batsmen - it's just that they were facing world-class opponents every time they took the field.
Even the Aussie batsmen of that era were only averaging early 40s, which shows how deflated the batting statistics were back then. If you want proof, here you go: Usman Khawaja averages the same as Mark Waugh.

This was a very astute observation last night.
Only difference between Australia and England innings was the Warner/Labuschagne partnership, albeit very different weather conditions.
England will have to win this game batting day 3 and perhaps 4, but with spin also coming into play.

That wicket just brings it home, if they batted sensibly England would have pissed this test.

Yeah, it's a tricky pitch to be fair, but the England wickets were worse considering the overhead conditions Australia had to deal with. Australia rode their luck and it evened out over the innings, England were just rubbish.
To be fair apart from Archer and Broad to some extent, your other bowlers have been poor. Woakes should be bowling better but he has been pretty poor this match.

I don't think Woakes is fit. Nor was in the last match. I doubt he'll play the next match.
That's another thing. This Australian attack is the best I've seen from them over here since 2001.

Well it's batting everyone where they like to bat. You could even turf out Roy for Pope but if you're gonna bother with Roy in tests you have to give him a long dart at 6.

No I agree. Doesn't look himself at all. He's usually a quality bowler in English conditions.
Pope looks like a good bet, given he's just scored a double-hundred for Surrey. Sibley as well. But yeah, after that you're getting a bit thin on the ground.
Of course we could always put Sam Curran in the top order, as I've been droning on about for months.
Yeah Curran & Pope, but not lower than 4. That’s the problem, big pool of talent for the middel order and nothing for the top 3 positions. I guess we could try Sibley instead of Roy, bring in Stokes at 3, Root at 4, drop Denly for Pope and play him at 5, then Bairstow at 6 and finaliteit drop Buttler for Curran at 7. So:

I don't think the Aussies will mind Archer charging in for the rest of the day. Keep *arching* your back banging it in short. His workload in the last week is going to look immense by the end of this test.
