English cricket thread

The absolute braindead batting throughout this series from England has been incredible. I think that Ali dismissal just about sums it up. Gets away with one, then plays the exact same shot next ball and gets out.

Australia haven’t been incredible, they haven’t needed to be. They’ve just been sensible and not done anything stupid. Could easily see this ending 5-0. Very disappointing.

Why I worry about the Aussies getting in back in early... was hoping we could at least bat out most of the day and the Aussies would be in tomorrow when the weather is all over the place.
Yeah definitely. Runs are obviously the first problem, but even if we go all out and get within 50, you get the feeling they can use a few hours today to their advantage.

Woakes isn’t going to sit around and avoid the bouncers by the looks of it. Probably needs to look at what Broad did at Lords and stick with Stokes for a while.

Well this is shit.

Got to get within about 30 runs for a chance. Don't really see how we can do it, even with Stokes in there.

in my learned cricket opinion, we’re a bunch of useless wankers.

Pray for rain for the next month to avoid a 0-5  :(

I think we've bowled pretty poorly this series, the batting has been crap, the general decision making terrible and the fielding a disgrace.

But apart from that it's been alright.

It takes a lot for me to feel like switching something off halfway through, but I’m getting close

In work so I can’t watch the match, just following the scores. Crazy how this has gone. After Australia collapsed I really thought England were in a commanding position to put up a big total.

Staring very firmly down the barrel now. By far the biggest difference between the sides been the catching. Throughout the series but in particular dropping marsh and head yesterday.

I didnt like the decision to drop foakes and I think that particular decision is coming back to haunt England.

I know it was root that dropped marsh but having a WK that isnt performing that well puts the added pressure on the slips. Bairstows keeping has been poor throughout the series, he's never been an outstanding keeper, but he has been poor in particular this series and it seem to have spread in the team.

Wtf, if England concede any form of lead its difficult to see them winning this one aside from more Stokes fourth innings heroics. You can just bet on one of Australia's top order doing some damage in the 2nd innings and things getting tricky on the final day.

And the one game where we actually bowled very well - the fielding and the batting has become exceptionally crap.

I've seen England sides lose to Australia over the years simply because there is a total gulf in class. Fair enough. There was a period when England had that edge over the Aussies too in the early 2010s.

But this is a whole other level. These are (largely) capable players who have the ability to challenge this Aussie side but are simply gifting a series away here due to utter stupidity.

If England were "saving" test cricket earlier in the series, they're doing the utter opposite here in Headingley right now. Shocking stuff.

Yeah this is true. It's not been a case of them just steamrolling us like in the 90s.

In every test we've got ourselves on top and then absolutely fecking thrown it away. Terrible shot selection, dropping easy catches, missing easy stumpings, walking out your crease, clean bowling someone but it's a no ball and on and on.

It's been so fecking sloppy.

I don't think there has ever been an away whitewash Ashes series. Aus deserve to do it this time round at this rate.

Yeah, the worst part is there will be no alternative to watch when irrelevant Fourth & Fifth tests take place. So grateful to Wimbledon for offering a distraction last two days

I'm not watching but the run-rate rather suggests that the moaners have won and Bazball has been put aside in favour of the pragmatic approach that served us so well before it.

Or that bazball requires flat decks..

Yeah a sensible 5-0 just sums up this series

Moeen should never play again after that. Brainless to do so after getting away with it just before and even in his prime he wasn't a reliable run scorer. It's not good enough and a middle finger to every other spinner in the country that he was called back in after three years of no red ball cricket. Useful bowler in the past but move on.

I believe England are still in it Australia's batting isn't exactly a Sure thing either even throught out this series they have collapsed regularly from strong positions as well .

But England do need to do better job in the field can't let Aussies off the hook time and time again , can't afford to do that especially when you are second best in talent department .

So what's the defecit gonna be?

Is it a boundary if the player has the ball in one hand, but is touching the rope with a body part at the same time? The answer is yes.

Was Bairstow out for leaving the crease prior to the ball being "dead" and the umpire calling over? The answer is yes.

But of course you must know the real actual rules of Cricket though.

Rules are irrelevant. The spirit of the thing is but only if you haven't gone to a posh British private school.

Made a mistake in this Ashes before a ball was bowled by just dropping Foakes from first two tests. How different things might have been had they not done that

It'd have been exactly the same

feck sake

The good thing about it is that the score can very quickly close up.
