English cricket thread

Saw a discussion earlier in this thread that most English players went to private schools.

Is it because public schools don't have the facilities to support a relatively more expensive game? And does that mean England pick from a relatively smaller pool of players than they potentially could if the game was more widely played?

Yes - Cricket is an expensive sport in England. Standard schools just don't have the budget to support it / the attendee's and their parents the budgets to encourage their kids to pursue it.

We have huge untapped potential in our Asian and Carribean heritage population. Let alone more widespread.

And ofcourse we are just obsessed with football. I went to a state school and all everyone wanted to do every term was play football, whether it be summer or winter.

Massively so, the biggest loss being the British Asian kids who in the cities make up the vast majority of those you see playing cricket in the park but don't go to expensive schools.

It needs to start at primary school (5-11) plastic bat and those orange balls. By the time you get to secondary school, a lot of the better players are already playing club cricket anyway.

Equipment is one of the biggest blockers, and I certainly remember stopping playing properly at around 13 at my local club because that’s when you started to need your own equipment - can’t exactly borrow whites and a box. No chance my parents could afford that.

School side I carried on playing through till 16 because they supplied everything bar the bat, but stopped after that. I don’t remember playing a lot of schools locally, like we did for football, which suggests it wasn’t as widely offered even 20 years ago. Can imagine it’s only got worse while it’s been on Sky Tv.

The other problem is sports retention in the teenage years dips all across the board including football which is the easiest and most accessible sport to play. Because those youngsters have other things to occupy their time which prior generations did not.

Crawley is so frustrating, you can see how good he is but he just makes too many mistakes. There's a bit of Hick about the way he gets out in the 20's or 30's.

Nice to see Bazball mothballed...for now anyway.

Sunny day tomorrow.

The likes of Wood, Bairstow, Stokes come across as being pretty working class in the interviews. I thought private schools were just for the richer families

Nasser is spot on. Starc just just sprays it all around and then bowls a ripper

I think this is marginally Australia's day.

They should have been bowled out for around 180-200, but they managed quite a few more. 260 just seems like a good score here.

So far, Australia have held onto everything and that could be the difference - holding onto catches. They do drop catches as well but you don't expect four from them, or someone to drop an absolute gimme.

like the old saying goes, “catches win games of cricket.”

Bairstow went to a private school and Root got a cricket scholarship to one. Football is just so more accessible and cheaper than cricket. Obviously more popular as well.

It’s genuinely annoying that fielding is kind of deciding this series. England have been shocking in the field and deserve to lose honestly

The weird thing is that it’s not fielding, just catching behind the stumps. England’s fielding in general has been extremely good. It’s easy enough to write off Bairstow’s drops as him being a poor keeper, but the stuff in the slips has been rotten all series. It always always going to cost big runs at some stage.

I'd say justttt about also, but it's tight. Fact of the matter is - it shouldn't be. We removed the immovable objects (Smith & Gum chewer) and looked in good nick. Fair play to Marsh but those dropped catches (Root for Marsh & Bairstow for Head) were so costly. Then, of course, we gift a few early ones. Very entertaining for the neutral but utterly frustrating. Need to stay strong in the morning but I just don't have faith we will. Will be lucky to match their total IMO.

Going to be a beautiful day to bat tomorrow. Headingly is one of those places where the overheads really do make a difference. Quite overcast and gloomy at times today and ball was moving. Tomorrow when it's blue skies and sunny it will probably look much flatter, good pace and carry and a rapid outfield aswell.

England should be well ahead realistically, Bairstow and root may well have the perfect opportunity to make amends for there dropped catches tomorrow. Those dropped catches and the three wickets against England have very much kept Australia right In it. They will be fancying couple of quick wickets in the morning to put England right in the mire.

Another day of enthralling cricket awaits. Certainly been very entertaining series so far.

I feel for Brook a bit. He's never a test 3, is he? It really should be Root. Root has all the attributes to be a 3. Good technique, plays it late. Harry Brook does not. He's a dasher. Better at 4 or 5. I completely blame the management for putting him in that situation where he's facing the new ball with Cummings and co charging in.

Thing is, you don’t really want Root in during the first few overs, and I reckon it’s about 75% chance of that happening right now if he bats at three. But yes, Brook just seems a walking wicket at three and it’s a bit of a waste.

If they've got a ball with Root's name on it then what chance have the others got given how late Root plays it and the fact he actually has a defence? It just means you've got a higher chance of going 2 down for not many with Brook coming in. He could be damaging later against the older ball.

Yeah definitely gave up costly runs in that afternoon session but dragged back to an extent

There is no doubt I would have less gripes with this team IF a few things had happened which are

Found a way to play Foakes & Bairstow
Managed Archer better earlier in career
Practiced catching not playing Golf

I feel for Woody because probably took him longer than he wanted to sort out run up issue which blighted his early test career

The only way Bairstow and Foakes play is that either Stokes can bowl or they probably drop one of the opening batsmen.

It's only been one day and it's already a thrilling match. I really hope England can win this first session and set up a nice lead by the end of the day. We just have to hope the tail wags.

From this XI, could have just used Root as the spinner and Foakes in for Ali.

That would be my thinking. Ali is looking pretty part-time with the ball currently.

Really hoping England don't capitulate with the bat. Today looks like the only ideal batting day, important to stay out there as long as possible/open a decent lead.

Deep down expecting to see the Aussies batting by the afternoon session.

He seems a great guy

Am I the only one who has no idea what he was talking about with the UK holiday line? Saw loads of people laughing about it online.

Made it look so easy batting yesterday though so fair play to him. We’ll need someone to come in and do something similar today.

Knowing the way this series has gone England will probably get bowled out by lunch and give the Aussies good conditions to pile on

Because he like most people assumed that Green would play all 5 tests.

The Bison made it look easy and made a lot of Aussies eat humble pie last night.
