English cricket thread

It’s on Bairstow.

If Carey was at the stumps, would Bairstow just walk off? Of course not, he’d wait for the ball to be dead before walking off. He’s taken a chance because Carey is far back, but the same rules still apply.

It’s fantastic awareness from Carey.

Umpires should have just said the ball was dead and warned the wicketkeeper for being a dick.

He's not done anything? He's not trying to gain any advantage or a run. Carey is within his rights to do it, and it's out - but it's poor taste IMO

Was clearly out. what the feck are people on about?

But then again, there are plenty of people who have a problem with mankading when the non-striker is clearly in the wrong in that case..

people will have a problem with anything.

It's going to be extremely difficult to get the same momentum going after lunch

Not English or Australian, but that is very poor from Australia. If they go on to win, there will always be an invisible asterisk against it.

Read the arguments then. In the laws = out, noone denying it.

Does it sit right? Will the Aussies regret it?

There was nothing wrong just that people like to make a fuss. Carey was smart and Bairstow was stupid.

Even ex english players blamed Bairstow.

Regardless of how this match turns out, Carey has undone a lot of good will I had towards Australia that built up in the last few years. For most of my life the Aussies were cnuts, but under Cummins, for the first time ever they weren't, and I was actually able to appreciate them for just being a good team and had softened up towards them a bit, but that's all gone now.

Yep they are going to get some serious stick at OT next week. Really might fire England up even at two down. Whole country watching this now.

Cummins doesn't look entirely comfortable with it either which might mean it affects him a bit. It's not like McGrath or Ponting who revelled in this sort of thing. Makes it a fun watch though.

Yes they could have.
But even though I am English, I really don't like the booing at the Australian players, especially in the Long Room. It was all down to Barstow. He was the one to blame not them.

You can’t be serious. I think Aussies got off lightly because it’s lords. Any other ground and this would have been way worse

Exactly.

Was it dozy from Bairstow? Yes
Was it poor form from Australia? Also yes

Exactly. But Stokes has unleashed his talent and if Broad can hold up his end, this could be fun.

Anyone remember Chappell bowling last ball underarm v NZ (NZ needing a six to win)

Stokes is going too early here surely? At least give yourself time to get back in after the break.

Morgan laying it on Bairstow and saying he should be blamed.

Bairstow was slightly moronic in my opinion, although also shit umpiring not making it crystal when it's over. It is pure gamesmanship from the Aussies though and that's always going to rile everyone up.

Wonder what the reactions would have been if it was the other way around though... Imagine different from all sides involved.

Fecks sake calm down ….won’t last long trying to smack everything

If Stokes can guide us to victory here, cements his place among the pantheon of Brisitsh sportspeople.

It was really pathetic from Carey and Cummins but I think it'll win them the game and end up largely forgotten by the end of Cummins career. It probably will follow Carey forever.

Bit underlined: It'll sit fine with them. Stay in your crease until the the ball is dead in the eyes of both sides and you won't have a problem.

Bit in bold: They won't regret it.

The Bairstow dismissal is a bit like scoring a goal from an throw in where the opposition put it out because you have an injured player. Within the rules, not not really on.

Stokes would most definitely have withdrawn the appeal.
