English cricket thread

Not gonna lie, there seems to be a decent amount of spin on this pitch.

Everyone is ready to slate England for x, y or z but I've seen no one say you know what fairplay we are playing the best side in the world and not The Dog and Duck XI, it's OK for the other team to just be better than you which they are.

We need to play better for sure but even then the likely outcome is still an Aussie win.

How is being honest about the play “slating” them? The Aussies are the best team in the world and that is largely irrelevant.

England are performing nowhere near where they would expect to be with the ball and in the field. It’s an honest and accurate assessment. The opposition is irrelevant.

Precisely.

I'm glad someone appreciated that one.

He does have the look of someone who'd cry after they let go of their balloon because they thought they saw a penny on the ground

The Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge last year, England opted to bowl and New Zealand scored 553, England replied with 539. New Zealand scored 284 in the second innings before England chased it with a run-a-ball 299.

Who'd have thought Test matches have twists and turns.

Pitch looks to be the opposite of what England would want too, Edgbaston was similar to this.

Does the home team no longer prepare the pitch to suit them?

No wicket for Broad and Anderson all day. We need some seamers fit, and fast.

I agree. If he's not going to be considered they shouldn't have called him up. What's the old saying, "if you're good enough, you're old enough."

He's an 18 year old leggie who has barely taken a wicket this year.

Imagine throwing him into this!?

The evidence outside of a single match doesn't suggest he is good enough though. You'd be picking him on potential, which is very different.

And for Vibes as well. Going with 4 seamers was not vibes and really the conservative option.

I'm not entirely disagreeing with you. Like I said, if he's not worthy of a call up, don't call him up.

I'd be in favour if it was possible to wipe his memory after the match if it went horribly wrong but it's risking someone's career.

Yeah that’s fair. I still would have picked a spinner though. Even Dawson would have been better than nothing. Think we’ll destroy Root’s back if we overbowl him as well.

Being around the team and dressing room will be good experience.
It's the Ashes. We needed a spinner. Please don't tell me there is not a single spinner in the whole of England who wouldn't have been better than the dross we put out today as far as our seamers were concerned.

I'm always nervous about this. It's held up far better over the years than I ever expected but we certainly push our luck with it.

Yes. In Pakistan.

This is in England, in drizzling rain, in the Ashes, with everyone watching.
So? Your point is only play him when no one is watching or in a low stakes game? That's nonsense. If he's good enough, he's good enough (and I think he is tbh).
One of three times in senior cricket that he's taken more than three wickets in an innings. That match constitutes 7 of his 22 first class wickets.
That match is 7 wickets, not including his 22 first class wickets, and that's his one and only test. He's obviously thought of highly in the camp considering he's been on the fringes of the first team for the year.

Are you saying his 22 first class wickets does not include those 7? Test wickets have always been included first class stats, as far as I am aware.
