English cricket thread

Rishabh Pant is so good and it’s been evident for ages that he is this good but somehow he is still a bit underrated. Even with his aggressive style he seems like he has so much time when batting . He gets to 20-30 without you even noticing. Special player

India are effectively 257-3, they’re in firm control here especially with their best batsman still out there.

Oli Stone is bowling very well in the Blast here, which is very good news for England looking ahead
Yes, this will be important.

No doubt our attack is lacking any pace or ability to change the angle with a left armer. I think that's why we go completely flat as the ball gets older. Too predictable for the opposition with only an orthodox spinner to resort to. Quite frustrating as we could have a monstrous set of bowlers if we could keep them fit.

Naturally – this was a Bairstow press conference, after all – there was a good-natured barb or two at the assembled media as well. “Got no idea,” he replied when asked about whether technical improvements had driven his extraordinary run of form.

“I’ve never been a great technician. That’s why you lot have torn me to shreds. Leg-side of the ball, off-side of it, bowled through the gate. I’ve just stripped it back and tried to concentrate on watching the ball.”

He comes across as a nice guy in all interviews -- bit like Stokes.

I think McCullum is probably a great guy tactically -- his captaincy was really good to watch. I do think the effects of positive intent and all that are overstated. If intent was all that's needed to dramatically increase both your average and strike rate, a lot more batsmen wouldve cracked it. If you have the same conditions, you have to sacrifice either average for strike rate or strike rate for average.

I don't think it'll consistently work against good sides in test match conditions. I expect to see that soon. I do think tactically being offensive in an intelligent way that McCullum showed has a lot of upside, but you cannot simply turn a 25 average 50 strike rate batter into a 40 average at 130. It is possible today and this test match England do this again, but over the long run I would expect a lot more sanity.

I know limited overs batting bucked this trend about 10 years ago(aided by conditions to some extent), but test match cricket is a bowler's game.

If we put 400 up and bowl as we usually do, we are well in it.

I find all the commentators wanking over Bazball very puzzling. Especially since half of them were around when Oz under Waugh and pointing regularly used to score at above 4 RPO. They already employed this kind of attacking strategy for a sustained period of time so this is nothing new. The trend of RPO in tests falling back around 3 was a result of the overall bowling quality across all teams bouncing back from a period of lull and a sustained effort to generate result yielding pitches.

I still don't get why India haven't played Bhuvneshwar Kumar in England. He's by far their best bowler in these conditions

He has no where been good enough to merit a test berth. He just about discovered his form to an extent in ODIs/T20s.

If anything Umesh Yadav is the bowler who is unlucky to miss out.

Unpopular opinion -- as it stands, his career is now overrated and commentary hype looks unjustified. No sub-continental player goes down as a great with a sub-50 average.

He is certainly behind Sachin, Gavaskar, Dravid and Laxman with respect to being the best Indian test batsman of all time. I was expecting him to replicate the peak he showed at 2018 at least once but it is not certain to happen now. I think he really needs a 6 months break from all kinds of international cricket. Plus should retire from T20Is. T20 game has now evolved too much and last thing Kohli should try is to change his game up to catch up now.

At what point T20 mode sets in :D ? I enjoyed the first innings from both sides. Survive 40 overs then go big in next 40.

have you seen Prasidh bowl in red ball? Saw a bit of him in the warm-up -- I think he's going to be a good bowler. Very good Ranji record.

Well in fairness Curran is fit, we just haven't selected him. Same with Overton although admittedly he would be more to strengthen the batting.

This is going to get very boring. very quickly from an England perspective.

Might even have to get some work done.

Bizzare to start the innings with Root.

Really gave the impression we've already given up

No intensity at all this morning, gave India 30 runs for free - tuck in!

Pujara is always a dodgy starter.

Shreyas playing like a guy who doesn;'t think he'll last long

80mph, no swing, no seam - awful spinner.

NZ let us off in this situation a few times, not sure India will.

Maybe a good reality check for the new era. We are terrified to bowl Leach.

Billings doesn't catch a thing, does he

He looks incredibly nimble, but doesn't seem to do the one thing he's there to do

Caught a good one in the first innings to get rid of Ilyer tbf.

But otherwise he's shaky yep.

Don't think Billings has ever been considered a great keeper. A surprising inclusion for me.

It was due to the tight turnaround between Tests and the fact he was with the group.

Foakes will come back in, and he'll drop to being 3rd/4th choice.

I'd have found a way to get Brooks in and given Bairstow the gloves personally.

Yes, but not easy to break into the team right now. With his height he would be a great asset on SA and Oz pitches.

Shreyas is never going to see a ball pitched up outside Asia in his test career ever again.

Was coming.. He really looked scared of the short ball.. I've seen bowlers handle short balls better .. It was like watching Broad.

I am surprised he gets included in the test squad. He gets bounced out even in limited overs.

Bumrah legits looks more comfortable on short ball than Iyer.

He gets out to it on Indian pitches too... last prominent Indian player I struggle this much against short ball was Ganguly. Iyer should not be near any Indian team until he sorts this out.

He shouldn't be anywhere near an international side.
