English cricket thread

England are just an embarrassment at this stage. Hopefully they can at least fight in this test but overall..dear me

Did someone seriously suggest Malan Captain? He averages 30! That's about to get dropped in the near future unless he does something territory not reward him with a pivotal role in the side.

He's part of the problem, most of the side are. The issue is we have two proven test players that aren't ancient in Joe Root and Stokes. That's why he's the one of only two men that can be captain regardless of whether he's uninspired.

So then we get into the quality of the side. Anderson and Broad, still probably the best bowlers, especially at home, but they're 50. Robinson looks okay as a steady Eddie. The rest of the stocks are dry and nothing obvious coming through. No spinners either. No test batsman apart from Root and Stokes and the latter is a tad overrated. If this lot is the best we've got, and there is reason to think they probably are, we are in massive trouble, particularly with batting. None of them are going to average 40 in test cricket and that means you've got a modern Windies style lineup with one or two men expected to do it all.

Averaging 30 makes him our second best batsmen at present! (Whilst taking one for the team and batting out of position at 3). Don't know where you read any suggestion of making him captain though, he's 35 so won't have long left at Test level.

Rest of your post is spot on. We're 3 or 4 batsmen short of a strong team and ideally you'd want a pool of 7 or 8 to choose from who could average 40+.

If we can restrict Australia to about 250, there's a good chance we can avoid losing the test by an innings. Joke

Turning into a cracking match.

What was Root thinking at lunch, just can't hide my utter disgust at throwing that position away

Was quite unbelievable that he didn't start with Robinson and Anderson post lunch. They had rest in the break.

Garbage captain. Generational batsman.

Yeah and we have oblivious clowns like Ramprakash & Norcross conveniently ignoring that decision.

Take the captaincy away from him after this series and please sack Silverwood

Cummins is a Rolls Royce of a bowler. England just have to try and survive here.

To be fair Starc and Cummins are unplayable right now. Can't imagine any batsman having an easy time.

Honestly don't think you can blame the English batsman in this innings. This bowling is outrageously good.

Eng also touch unlucky with Malan dismissal. You need those to go in your favour to make a comeback.

:lol::lol::rolleyes:

Just when you think that IF the top three don't bottle it for once, England are in the game, the top 3 bottle it before you've had time to finish your morning poo.

Important England don't panic here and not throw any wickets away.

This is simply excellent bowling.

Smith still acts like he's captain and he's unaware that Cummins doesn't have to listen to him.

I don't buy this at all. Its the openers job to absorb pressure early on and see off the new ball. They should find a way to survive. If it was once every year or two you could put it down to a freak innings of bad luck and great bowling, but it happens every game. The top 3 are just rubbish.

Probably should have stuck with Sibley, at least he'd stick around for 50-100 balls.

The way Australia bowled there, you're not going to come out of a session unscathed without world class batsmen. They basically have a free hit at you for a good hour and they've had their feet up for a day, so they can come at you as hard as they want.

That said, England needed to come out of that with two down and three at the most. Leach doesn't really matter.

It's all about this partnership. If Root and Stokes can get England to parity and ideally 40/50 beyond, they have a chance from there. Very, very tall order, but not impossible.
