English cricket 2015 - NZ, The Ashes, Pak and SA

This is the most boring super over in history.

And England win.

Great game. Threw it away.

Pakistan are embarrassing at chasing targets, you just know that they are going to bottle it irrespective of how hard it is to lose from such a position.

Another fantastic finish. Need to watch a T20 at some point, seems like a lot of fun to be there.

engalnd losing the test series fairly convincingly but demolishing pakistan in the shorter formats? what is going on?

Exactly the same outcome in all formats as last time England toured UAE. Not that big of a surprise really. Only difference this time was that England actually had some entertaining players in the shorter formats and not dross like Bell, Trott and the under performers Anderson and Broad.

Also, was Broad stripped of his T20 captaincy or was Morgan just his deputy for this series?

Think Broad was rested ahead of the SA series, tbf don't think he has participated in many short form games apart from the World Cup.

Morgan's been T20 captain since the start of last summer.

Not sure Broad's played in a T20 since then either, England keep finding various ways to 'rest' Broad and Anderson for LO cricket and, tbh, I'm not sure either of them are a huge loss in shorter formats.

The test series was tighter than it actually looked IMO, England could have conceivably won the first test and drawn the second and picked up a handy 1-1 draw, however we pissed around far too long with Buttler and Bell in the lineup.

Looks like Compton might get a chance in the first test. Just hit a 50 in a warm up match with both Cook and Hales failing.

Think they might go for something like: Hales, Cook, Compton, Root, Taylor, Stokes, Bairstow

Seems the same old England 3 down before 60 runs scored, 2/10 with both openers out,
Stokes hit 158 off 131 the pick of England bats man, along side Taylor who hit 114

Interesting choice to go with Compton at 3 in the warm-up, not many would've predicted that. I think it's a good & safe option to go with, I'm still not sold on Ballance at 3.

how many tests is the sa-eng series?

4 tests.

Dala's technical analysis was particular damning, and chimed with a similar assessment made by the former England coach Peter Moores, who claimed that Hales had been "found out" by the ball shaping back into him after he made an underwhelming ODI debut last year.

"It looks like he is trying to open up the off side every time he faces the ball. I just tried to keep it simple and tuck him up because he struggles on the leg side.

"In the first innings I was hoping I would bring one back, but I wasn't expecting him to leave it. Second innings was a bit back of a length, but the same plan, just tuck him up and he chopped it on.

"It's nice when a game plan comes together."

Bloke that got Hales out both times in the warm ups.

Bit disconcerting.

So Hales gets out twice for 8 in a warm up match and already he's 'under pressure'. It's no wonder so many batsmen don't make it for the national team
This is the first time Hales has pulled on a white England shirt, he's obviously eager to impress and feeling a bit of pressure. At some point he will hit a nice smooth 50 and it will all start coming naturally. The selectors can't just keep chopping and changing this quick, especially TWO innings! Also Junior Dala who dismissed him twice has 77 first class wickets in his career and has obviously been picked for the Invitational XI for a reason so he's no village cricketer chucking pies down the wicket!

Edit - the 'under pressure' comment is taken from the current headline on Cricinfo rather than a response to anyone on here!

Dala also got a 5fer in the second innings which I guess backs your point up.

I don't think the under pressure comments are wrong though. He already was, even before these twin failures. There's pressure coming in to international cricket even if you're averaging 100

Look at his path to test opener:

-T20 openers
-Clamour to open in ODIs
-Moores comments about a weakness to the ball coming in to him (either swing or spin)
-Gets a chance in ODIs first of all at 3, underwhelms
-World cup debacle
-Rich vein of form in County Cricket batting at 3 and belatedly moves to the top of the order when Lyth starts struggling
-Opener in ODIs underwhelms for most of the summer including a very dodgy spell against Australia better series against Pakistan

He's basically getting a chance because everyone else has already failed, which is probably not the best way to get into the side, and even then the England camp preferred to give Mooen a chance first (although they did the same with Trott and Lyth).

I dunno, I'm not sold on Hales. He's clearly talented, but I don't think he's got it in him to open for England in anything other than LO cricket and think if he's got a future in the test team its in the middle order. I don't think the rationale thats getting him picked is good enough (he scores quickly) and whilst I agree they should show faith in openers I don't think Hales is the right one (either Lyth, Carberry or Compton). I think England should just forget about the type of player and ask the simple question. In partnership with Cook which opener is most likely to have us 100-0 most often? The evidence shows that its been Compton of the players we've tried, and in the future I think it will be someone like Nick Browne. Yes, they're boring players. But we've got one of the most explosive middle-orders in international cricket, they just need a platform to be set.

There's plenty of talent in that England batting line up despite the performances over the last years and the inexperience of a lot of the players. You can't tell me that the likes of Root, Taylor, Ballance, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler and Ali aren't talented batsman. If they can sort out the top 3 then England will have a formidable batting line up in the future. But they desperately need an opener to support Cook and a decent no.3.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but has our gun bowler really just bowled only 4 overs in the warm up games?

If Anderson isn't fit for Boxing Day, as a Derbyshire fan (even though he's left us now) may I just say, Mark Footitt - COME ON DOWN!!
I am very annoyed that it has taken him leaving us to gain a full England call up. It shows that there is still a massive snobbery within the ECB and rather than getting picked on merit, it very much depends on your County. However despite this we are all very proud that our superstar of the last 3 years could be about to play in his first Test.

This has been a good partnership.

Important that the team can guts it out if Cook and Root both fail.

The frustrating thing is Compton and Taylor are playing 7-8 tests too late IMO.

Dropping Compton a couple of years ago was harsh in the first place. Glad he's taking his chance.

Dour batsman. Fantastic addition to any test team if he plays like that regularly.

Takes a batting collapse to appreciate him for some people..

Like that batting collapse?

303 all out not the worse score in history

Good response from Ali after getting dismantled by ABDV.

Sat through it all today with a rather inebriated group of friends and the amount of stick they were giving Ali was uncalled for really. I genuinely think he's a better bowler than most people think.
