England vs Iceland

Now England are always a fecking embarrassment, but they've really taken it to a new level this time. You can say the talent isn't great but it's still better than most countries. Many of the players are stand out performers in the Premier League after all.

You can't be losing to a country less than 1/100th the size of you ffs. Congrats to Iceland though it is amazing what they are doing here and they fully deserve it.

Fantastic result! Truly fantastic! Well done Iceland you Viking Gods!
Hang your heads in shame England you overpaid overrated numpties.

I'm glad we're out. I despise the nationalism that goes with every ING GER LAND match. We cannot produce talent in the way France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands and Germany do consistently through the decades. We do not deserve success. The one thing we do well, better than anyone, is work rate and heart, but that alone aint enough. However, when you ally this mentality with continental flair and technique you have one hell of a domestic league.
Do we actually have the work rate and heart that is better than anyone though? A lot of our players put a shift in, but watching the other British sides and especially Italy I don't think we can even lay claim to that.
We've certainly got the most overhyped players though.

I think some here are over playing this.. Iceland played really well today and deserved this. Someone here said something about english heart and workrate, they could learn a thing or two from Iceland.

Credit to Iceland tonight, they were set up right and didn't allow England a moment of peace to gel or get into any sort of rhythm. England looked way too overconfident during the first few minutes, they were playing like they already won the game. Once England went 1-0 up I thought Iceland were doomed but they attacked even after going 2-1 up, and didn't sit back as most of us thought they would. Definitely cheering for Iceland against France, I hope they do it.

Portugal showed that it wasn't going to be easy, but we just never managed to impose our game at all really. Devoid of ideas and ultimately quality. Rashford's fearless display showed what was possible, but of course, it was far too late. 10 other players of similar ilk and we're talking, but we're far, far from that dream scenario. Players like Barkley, Stones, Wilshere should have come good by now, but we're still waiting. I'm not fooled by the hype, they need to prove it first, and they've disappointed at virtually every turn. Positives are that Shaw will return, the emergence of Rashford, and the a group of newcomers like Ali and Stones. My personal belief is that english players need to start playing in leagues in Europe to 'promote' the emergence of more technically gifted pool of players to pick from. That is so unlikely to happen though. Players like Ashley Cole going to Roma (albeit at the end of his career) is a rarity and I think it is to our national teams disadvantage.

I said at the beginning of the tournament that Iceland was my outside bet, but couldn't see them progressing past France, Italy or Spain. Wish I'd put a few quid on them now. They were @101.00

All eyes should go to the FA. England consistently fields teams weaker than the sum of their parts. Yes, the players underperform, but the consistency with which they do so points to the system/set up itself.

Hodgson fielded a team that through four matches looked a weak, bloated and juicy target for any half-decent team willing to attack. I've dismissed the players as the crux of the issue and I hold to that. It's a factor, but not the cause.

The FA has proven itself incapable of mustering a competitive team. Continuing with its way or leadership is to continue this failure. Rarely has their failure been as abject as this tournament, but it's persistent failure. Given the resources and players at hand, it's more than just mediocrity.

Appointing and keeping with Hodgson was doubling down on failure. Tbf, they tried to break the cycle with Erikson and Capello. But, this is on them. This is their handiwork and it's not really that much of an anomaly. This trainwreck has been a long time coming. Well done, shitbirds.

I don't want to take away from Iceland. They've punched above their weight for a while now. They came up on my radar in the last few years by chance. They've been impressive, and it culminated today. They have a bit of a golden generation now, and they are making it count. They shouldn't have had a chance, but they did--and they made it count. It's not their fault the FA reduced their advantages to a tumescent, inept target. England by miles was the better squad, but Iceland has been a better team in the tournament. That's what counted.

So they were your outside bet, even though you could see a fair few teams beating them? What kind of fecking tip is that?

For god's sake stop with the endless negativity. Did none of you see that Pippa Middleton wore a pretty poppy dress to Wimbledon?

Was she at the Djokovic vs Ward match? If so, she'd have been lucky enough to see an Englishman hit the net with a ball.

Perhaps this can be a watershed moment.

ITV panel asked why does this happen every time. Maybe its because every time we just assemble a collection names that the manager has to play. The Gerrard Lampard situation is a key example. This squad has to be worst at doing that, feck it lets take everyone who's hot in the EPL.

It was billed as the greatest assembly of English talent for many many years and its produced probably the most embarrassing moment. This collection of players don't have the brains to sort it out on the pitch and I don't expect them to, nor do they have the raw natural talent required to overcome that, its the managers job to take a balanced team and organize them.

Yet England showed zero work rate and zero heart. If they had half of Iceland's work rate and heart they would have won today.

What I meant was if there was going to be a shock it would be Iceland but looking at the games they would come up against France, Italy or Spain to get to the final which might be a step too far. Not that fecking difficult is it??

How are things in Iceland at the moment? Have they declared a national holiday yet? Would love to see some scenes.

Odds on Iceland winning is around 8.5 so if you put 5k, you will get back 42,500  not sure how much you are earning but I'm sure 37,500 should be enough to cover your salary deduction for the year! I'm tipping Iceland to win 1-0. Their fairytale will continue.

Thanks. shakes head... i wish you hadn't told me how much money that bet would have been worth. the winnings would have got me off this project for the rest of the year. This is all just too depressing. Roll on new season. Title challenge please Jose.

Congrats to our Icelanders, @Asger @Snow and the rest. Too much focus on England fecking up and not enough on Iceland's qualities.

That said, what a week for england, the world has to be laughing.

Pretty sure Hodgson was reading his resignation off a written note - not exactly a good sign having it prepped 'just in case we lose to Iceland'....inept, toothless and we have all had the wool pulled over our eyes once again

Agreed. We really should take a long hard look at ourselves.

However, I think there is fat chance of that because it would appear that the country is getting even more insular and up itself. If that's possible.

I've never been so ashamed.

Don't feel bad, there's always America. I've been living here since 78 and I don't think any country can get more full of shite than this one.

Roy should not of been given the job in the first place, not only that, he shouldn't of kept it after the World Cup.

He is one of the most inept, cowardly, and stubborn managers I have ever seen.

He also seemed to be completely oblivious we were playing in a knock out tournament, where the key is momentum, enthusiasm, and going all in to get the the result and get through, especially for limited sides like ours.

By mid way through the firsthalf we were already at walking pace, passing it backwards and sideways and floating aimless straight balls over a defence that was sat five yards in front of its goal.

completely clueless.

Congratulations to Iceland. Deserved win. What did Hoddle have to say after the match anyone? Some of his comments before the game were completely out of order

That just isn't true. Most of the players in that team are not big names. Many of them were given their debut by Hodgson. The players available to choose just aren't very good.

Yup. Definitely agree with this. Not at all Hodgson's fault. He just didn't have good players to choose from unlike the Iceland manager. Hodgson is an amazing manager.
