All eyes should go to the FA. England consistently fields teams weaker than the sum of their parts. Yes, the players underperform, but the consistency with which they do so points to the system/set up itself.
Hodgson fielded a team that through four matches looked a weak, bloated and juicy target for any half-decent team willing to attack. I've dismissed the players as the crux of the issue and I hold to that. It's a factor, but not the cause.
The FA has proven itself incapable of mustering a competitive team. Continuing with its way or leadership is to continue this failure. Rarely has their failure been as abject as this tournament, but it's persistent failure. Given the resources and players at hand, it's more than just mediocrity.
Appointing and keeping with Hodgson was doubling down on failure. Tbf, they tried to break the cycle with Erikson and Capello. But, this is on them. This is their handiwork and it's not really that much of an anomaly. This trainwreck has been a long time coming. Well done, shitbirds.
I don't want to take away from Iceland. They've punched above their weight for a while now. They came up on my radar in the last few years by chance. They've been impressive, and it culminated today. They have a bit of a golden generation now, and they are making it count. They shouldn't have had a chance, but they did--and they made it count. It's not their fault the FA reduced their advantages to a tumescent, inept target. England by miles was the better squad, but Iceland has been a better team in the tournament. That's what counted.
