England in India 2021

Superb from England. Let's hope these two can keep grinding tomorrow. The longer we bat, the more help we'll get from the wicket when India bat.

Almost 300 runs for England today, good day for them. Still felt it would have been better had they been more aggressive and had indian openers bat for 10 odd overs. If you think you can't win scoring 500 plus and need another 100 odd runs, that screams playing for draw.

Think we'll see loads of no-balls for the next few months, then bowlers will adjust and they'll just go out of the game hopefully.

I’d hope that these players would adjust before the next innings now that they know what they’re dealing with.

What a batting performance from England. Think there is going to be pressure on the curators now to produce better wickets for the rest of the series

Bess is really handy with the bat.

Might end up being like Steve Smith* gets in as a spinner but eventually he's just a good batsman and that's how he stays in the team.

*obviously won't be as good as Smith.
Think the Smith 'transformation' story is a bit overstated. He played one game at number 8 from Australia (on a seaming wicket when spin wasn't really needed) and from then on he played as a batting all-rounder. Plus apparently he's always been more committed to batting than bowling during practice.

But yeah - Bess looks a really good batsman and he's going to get plenty of runs for England, as will Curran.

You can see why England are giving him a long leash, the mental side of his game is top notch.

Hopefully we get pitches that have more in them for the quicks rather than pitches that turn earlier on. I think that would suit both teams more.

Think we're just trying to take the game deep and create scoreboard pressure. Our spinners aren't great, so the more help we can give them from the pitch and the match situation, the better.

That is understandable and especially since you lost matches even after scoring 450 plus last time when you toured. I still feel you don't get such opportunities in india that a touring side is in such a dominant position, so you have to be a bot more aggressive. The pitch may deteriorate but you still have to give enough time for your bowlers to take those 20 wickets. Also knowing rohit he would have succumbed to the pressure and gave away his wicket had you guys declared today. As an indian fan I will take draw right now if you offered me. Not many times do a side lose after scoring 550 plus.

Yeah fair enough, I remember thinking at the time this Smith guy is a crap bowler

Nice little partnership at the end though from Bess and Leach, really snuffed out any slight chance of India gaining even the tiniest bit of momentum.

Getting all out fot 129 is inexcusable though especially to that Aussie side who were dangerous. I will say that was just a bottle job. I will still fancy you guys in this match unless pant or some other batsmen goes crazy and we score 4 run per over and reach 650 plus runs by end of day 4.
Famous last words but I really can't see how India win from here.

After the aussie series I will never write any team off especially this Indian side but yes considering how this pitch is, it will be interesting to see us win from this position. India must bat well tomorrow. Poor day tomorrow and we might be in big trouble. End the day tomorrow with 250 for 2 or 3, I will be relieved.

India are out of it. I only wish England had declared earlier to give themselves a better chance to win(which also gives India a slightly better chance). Feels like this pitch will turn on day 4 and 5, and England aren't giving themselves enough time.

Would rather see a result even if it's an English win than a draw.

Always hard to tell without having seen both teams bat (points for cliche?). But it's not as if India haven't had the chances to wrap up this England innings long before now/limit them to a ~450 score. Chances haven't been taken and runs have been gifted away.

It will take a top performance to force a result granted, but England have batted for runs and time, taking the best out of this wicket. If they can get Anderson asking questions/limiting scoring opportunities and Bess can get it misbehaving, we could be in for a very dramatic couple of days.

India's batting depth worries me though, especially here.

Think England have done exactly the right thing personally. Secure the draw before going for the win. Imagine this will be their template for the series.

India are out of this match, 550 is already enough runs on the board and India will be under pressure.

I think we’re at the stage where it’s England’s game to lose. Having said this, I think they’re mentally set on a draw from this game. They probably have a “draw is a win” mindset.
I don’t think they trust their bowling attack to get India out twice on this pitch.

I think England have a good chance of getting them out twice. I think they have a better chance the more runs they get though.

I think they haven’t given themselves enough time. In trying to bat India out of the game, they’ve batted themselves out. They’re trying to bat an hour at least on Day 3! Besides, the scoring rate hasn’t improved. So why bat a few hours more for 50-60 runs?

Edit - I want to see how Archer does in tests here. Does he have it in him to bowl long spells in Chennai?
(Reminds me of the “Cold rainy Wednesday at stoke“ :P)

There's plenty of time and if there isn't, the problem will be that England didn't get enough runs to give them more time.

Read this on cricbuzz:
- 190.1 overs by England is the longest first innings in Test cricket since South Africa batted out 190.4 overs against India in Kanpur in 2004/05.

Tells you how well England have batted in this innings.

We're gonna look so silly if India bat the rest of the match without scoring more than 578 runs.

That Gill’s very pleasing on the eye. Something David Gower about him. Fantastic talent.

Brilliant catch by Anderson, India under pressure. Archer bowling at the speed of light.

Archer leaked some runs but was causing all sorts of problems with his raw pace. Anderson struggled his lines.

Just seen a clip of Cook talking.. has he gotten 10 years younger?
