England in India 2021

Some of these pitch comments are a bit salty.

It is a bit of a dodgy wicket, surely we all agree?

But India have played really well on it, and England haven't. I wouldn't over analyse it much more than that and i'd heavily expect Root/England management will say the same thing.

England and Aussie, players, commentators and fans tend to hold a duopoly on salt in the cricket commentating world.

Every time I turn this on, I'm totally baffled by the size of the crowd with, seemingly, no attempt being made to keep the spectators apart.

I haven't been able to watch much of this, so, can someone explain what the actual feck is going on?

I went there for first and second days play, no protocols followed here, they make sure that people are wearing mask when they enter in otherwise it looks like normal day, even the older spectator never bothered in wearing mask.

England have bowled really badly in this test match. I would expect a decent spin attack to get any team out for less than 200 on this pitch. India have batted really well but they know that they will get freebies every over so no pressure is built up

Just came to post on this.

Lovely to see crowds in, but very strange to see it looking so normal.

Is covid not so much of an issue there right now, or just people being daft?

Moeen on the first day was a disaster.

Rest of the attack was 'ok'.

Bit of both.

The "official" covid numbers are around 10k which is nothing in 1.3bn population but nobody believes the official numbers and i was expecting masks on everyone.

Really felt emotional with Ashwin's century. An amazing feat on a pitch that was supposed to be unplayable.

Based on this test and considering the rotation policy employed by us I'd like to see Matthew Parkinson for the next game. Leg spinner for Lancs who has really been playing well in the county championship.

You reckon we will chuck in an unproven wrist spinner at 1-1 in India?

Don't see it myself!

If Sibley and Burns make the close here we should knight them.
Unfortunately, I can't remember a worse top-end England batting line-up with the exception of Root. I'm not even sure Stokes is suited to this pitch.

I'm actually a Burns fan, just not played enough Cricket of late.

Jury is well and truly out on Sibley. Lawrence out of his depth being thrown in at 3 touring India.

Have you been watching this test? You would rather keep Ali for the next game?. Give him a chance he deserves it.

Parkinson is more an option for the shorter form of cricket. He's not even generally great in county championship for Lancs.

Am from Chennai where the match is. COVID reported numbers went down to very low levels, and no one knows if the government is lying to us or not. But people take it at face value and behave extremely normally. There's 10% of us who take it seriously and do all that you said, but 90% of India is like this. Beaches packed, no masks, public transport, pubs full.

We have no idea what's going on - no one knows why COVID isn't affecting things.

All of India is like this I believe.

I can only suggest that because it's a hot country, it promotes lower levels of the virus?

In a country with 20 times the population of the UK, there are only 2 1/2 times the number of cases and 1 1/3 times the number of deaths.

Virus was rampant here last summer. There's something we don't know.

If Parkinson is poor in the county championship for Lancs then why have the selectors included him in the England test squad of this tour?.

I'm not buying it to be honest, Joe Root made his debut in India and made 73 in the first innings. There's no point selecting these young lads and not giving them the chance.

People look so normal here, Govt report cases but not much as where other states reporting it, cases gone down drastically, people takes it so lightly, they got mask but don't wear it all the time even in crowed places.

Because the cupboard is bare when it comes to spin bowling options. Mason Crane has a test cap and he got predictably pumped everywhere because he's crap.

Parkinson's a leg spinner and that alone gets the England selectors excited.

We don't know what's happening here even the neighbour state of Kerala report close to 5k cases daily which is highest in the country compared to other states.
Climate had noting to do here last summer at peak we had more cases.

Not enough is being said about how poor an opening 3 England have for a tour like this. England have great depth on paper, but that's in part due to their best batsmen being shielded by those above them. You feel that one of Stokes, Ali or Root needed to step up at some point. None were able to. It's been an issue for us ever since Cook/Strauss left.

Why don't more tall players use Matthew Hayden's blueprint for playing spin? I.e. sweep everything

We've found a spin combination that works in the absence of Jadeja - and that in my mind is the biggest problem facing England from last match to this.

Last game was pressure from only 1 end with spin.

Will probably be a weird thing to say about someone who has taken eight wickets and might end up with ten wickets but I don't think Moeen Ali bowled well in this match.
He's not a specialist at both bowling or batting. He's one of those cricketers who is suited to the shorter format. He mostly blows hot and cold. You can compare him to Martial and Pogba at United.

Managed to bowl India out with plenty of time to get these.

Variable bounce on this pitch. You'd top edge one before too long if you swept indiscriminately.
