Need Root to stay until the end if they are going to win.
if England win this, I'd hate to be Steve Smith at the post match press conference. The media on either side will mention the follow on. I hope our media doesn't side step the issue if England win.
Even if we go on to lose this at least we've show some actual heart and fight finally, the age old question has to be asked; can a loss be a win?
Aye, it'll be a truly terrible captaincy mistake down there with "we'll have a bowl' at Brisbane. The Aussies are looking very jittery now as the runs are flowing, but Cummins and Hazelwood are apparently bowling well. A wicket now would be very disappointing.

Last year vs Pakistan in Brisbane, Smith had the opportunity to enforce the follow on, decided against it, set Pakistan 490 to win and Pakistan fell 39 short of smashing the world record run chase to smithereens. If he enforced the follow on there, the test would have ended inside three days and i think there's a fair chance something similar would have happened in this match. I still expect Australia to win.
Aye. It's the funniest thing when captains don't back their bowlers to get another ten wickets when they're all over the batsmen. Maybe I'm missing key nuances of the situation but unless your best bowlers are injured/exhausted and you think it's essential to get them in for a rest why wouldn't you get back at the batsmen you've just been bullying?
Malan gone. Cummins is a beast around the wicket even with a soft cheery.
Normally i'd say it was 50/50 going into the last day but with England's history of batting collapse's, have to favour the Aussies.
I don't know about other nations but i sometimes feel that Australian captains are a bit paranoid that by enforcing the follow on, they'll have their own Kolkata story where Australia enforced the follow on and lost.
Here's the score breakdown: Result 2nd Test, Australia tour of India at Kolkata, Mar 11-15 2001
India won by 171 runs.
Now, what happened in Kolkata in 2001 shouldn't be the template of what to do when you can enforce the follow on. Say Australia lose, what will Smith do if enforces the follow on and loses? He'll be muddled.
Could understand it if it was super hot or the Aussie bowlers were struggling with nagging little injuries. What was the state of the series going into that game, out of interest?I don't know about other nations but i sometimes feel that Australian captains are a bit paranoid that by enforcing the follow on, they'll have their own Kolkata story where Australia enforced the follow on and lost.

Cheers for that. Altough they did enforce it in that game, i thought the Aussie's had a bit of record, under Clarke especially of not enforcing it. It would be interesting to see if that's correct or just something i've picked up wrongAustralia was leading 1-0. India went on to win the series 2-1.

It’s nowhere near 50-50Normally i'd say it was 50/50 going into the last day but with England's history of batting collapse's, have to favour the Aussies.
I do not trust Ali or Bairstow not to do something daft. Realistically I think Root has to be batting until England need something like less than 50 for there to be any chance.
Read the post. I haven't took England to winIt’s nowhere near 50-50
I’d want at least 4/1 on England from here. And even then, still expect Aus to win
All about these two seeing it out to the new ball, and then Root and someone (I’d send Anderson and/or Overton) to dog in against the new pill.
But in reality, Root will be out early and all hope will be over
Yep, I expect England to be all out for 250. Needed Stoneman or Vince with Root at the close of play to have a chance of winningExpect Australia to win by 80-100 runs.
The 3rd test is at the new WA stadium correct? So technically the Aussies record at the WACA is irrelevant!2-0 will become 5-0 unless rain ruins one of the remaining tests. Australia basically always win at the WACA unless they're playing South Africa.
Nope its still at the WACAThe 3rd test is at the new WA stadium correct? So technically the Aussies record at the WACA is irrelevant!
