England Cricket Winter 2017/18 - Ashes & NZ

Need Root to stay until the end if they are going to win.

It's the hope that kills you..... I've watched England for a long time and I still don't expect us to get within 100 runs. It might sound pessimistic but that's where we've got to.
As soon as Australia break this partnership (especially if it's before COP) their tails will be up and it's a different game again.

if England win this, I'd hate to be Steve Smith at the post match press conference. The media on either side will mention the follow on. I hope our media doesn't side step the issue if England win.

Moeen Ali is another key wicket, when he does eventually come in. Only one apart from Root who has it in him to play a clutch winnings.. need a partnership between him and Bairstow. Root needs to make sure he gets us to within 70 runs.

Aye, it'll be a truly terrible captaincy mistake down there with "we'll have a bowl' at Brisbane. The Aussies are looking very jittery now as the runs are flowing, but Cummins and Hazelwood are apparently bowling well. A wicket now would be very disappointing.

Could it be.....

Australian bowlers not getting the ball to move around like Anderson and Broad did under the lights. Root has to convert and Malan has got himself in so the onus is on these two to see out the rest of today's play and get going again tomorrow. There is firepower down the order to cut the deficit quickly but the foundation needs to be set.

Even if we go on to lose this at least we've show some actual heart and fight finally, the age old question has to be asked; can a loss be a win?

I like the optimism but this show of heart won't be enough 2-0 down with Perth to come.

Last year vs Pakistan in Brisbane, Smith had the opportunity to enforce the follow on, decided against it, set Pakistan 490 to win and Pakistan fell 39 short of smashing the world record run chase to smithereens. If he enforced the follow on there, the test would have ended inside three days and i think there's a fair chance something similar would have happened in this match. I still expect Australia to win.

2-0 will become 5-0 unless rain ruins one of the remaining tests. Australia basically always win at the WACA unless they're playing South Africa.

Aye. It's the funniest thing when captains don't back their bowlers to get another ten wickets when they're all over the batsmen. Maybe I'm missing key nuances of the situation but unless your best bowlers are injured/exhausted and you think it's essential to get them in for a rest why wouldn't you get back at the batsmen you've just been bullying?

Malan gone. Cummins is a beast around the wicket even with a soft cheery.

I don't know about other nations but i sometimes feel that Australian captains are a bit paranoid that by enforcing the follow on, they'll have their own Kolkata story where Australia enforced the follow on and lost.

Here's the score breakdown: Result 2nd Test, Australia tour of India at Kolkata, Mar 11-15 2001
India won by 171 runs.

Now, what happened in Kolkata in 2001 shouldn't be the template of what to do when you can enforce the follow on. Say Australia lose, what will Smith do if enforces the follow on and loses? He'll be muddled.

Normally i'd say it was 50/50 going into the last day but with England's history of batting collapse's, have to favour the Aussies.

Roor, Wokes, Bairstow and Ali will need to make 90% of the required runs if England are to win. 62/38 Australia going into the last day for me.

Wow what a great game. That match was an horrendous freak played away from home from Australia's point of view. Then again I've just read Australia are the only side to have lost having forced the follow-on (three times including Kolkata) so perhaps you have a point about Australian captains.

Could understand it if it was super hot or the Aussie bowlers were struggling with nagging little injuries. What was the state of the series going into that game, out of interest?

Australia was leading 1-0. India went on to win the series 2-1.

Cheers for that. Altough they did enforce it in that game, i thought the Aussie's had a bit of record, under Clarke especially of not enforcing it. It would be interesting to see if that's correct or just something i've picked up wrong

It was a three match series. Australia absolutely decimated us in the first test, beating us in three days. They were on a world record winning streak of 16 consecutive test match victories too. They probably enforced the follow on because McGrath and Warne were in their absolute peak.

It's the greatest test match in the last three-four decades easily IMO.

Dravid and Laxmans partnership in 01 has made pretty much every Aussie captain doing a follow on be conservative.

Those 2 and our Post 2005 ashes obsession for an all rounder have been the 2 biggest mental hurdles for aussie cricket.

No reviews left for Australia is a big concern now. Got to take the good with the bad with the umpires. Teams now only get two unsuccessful reviews for the entire innings now. Hopefully it doesn't prove too costly.

Just tell Moeen it’s a one day game and he’ll knock that off in 2 overs.

Root will nick off within the first 30 mins, England all out 230 odd. Good effort but where the hell was this in the first 2 and half days?

It’s nowhere near 50-50
I’d want at least 4/1 on England from here. And even then, still expect Aus to win

All about these two seeing it out to the new ball, and then Root and someone (I’d send Anderson and/or Overton) to dog in against the new pill.

But in reality, Root will be out early and all hope will be over

I do not trust Ali or Bairstow not to do something daft. Realistically I think Root has to be batting until England need something like less than 50 for there to be any chance.

Mo will either get out stumped trying to smash Lyon down the park or he will actually smash Lyon around the park and do the business in glorious fashion.

Read the post. I haven't took England to win

The 3rd test is at the new WA stadium correct? So technically the Aussies record at the WACA is irrelevant! ;)
