England Cricket Winter 2017/18 - Ashes & NZ

I'm surprised we were in the game for as long as we were. Some brainless shots as per and a lame bowling attack.

ECB: we must stay lowkey and not give Australia any ammo.

also ECB: Where's Stokesy's number like feck am I going the whole tour with Jake Ball as the 4th seamer.

Sky probably paid for the trip so that they can send Jim White to the airport and let him go crazy

Aye with all his cricket gear and without his wife and children (unless they are already out there).

I think it’s just that, gone to see family. His kit is in case the police investigation finishes imo - as then he is close and able to get there quickly and relatively unaffected by time zones

I know I'm just pratting about.

Heard on the news that England has banned Aussie journos from England training ahead of the Adelaide test. The word paranoia comes to mind.

The Police have completed their investigation and now seeking charging advice. Regarding Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes is a twat, but would be that bad if he were to play? I mean Warner punched Root a few years back and is still playing now.

No. For me it's simple. If Stokes doesn't play, Australia win the series 5-0 and the ECB is praised for doing what's morally right. If Stokes plays, England has a decent shot of maybe doing enough to leave here with the Ashes and that's the point of the series.

If Australia wins in Adelaide, i don't see the point in Stokes playing. I believe 2-0 will become 5-0 and the media shitstorm generated by Stokes inclusion is only worth it if England still has a realistic shot of retaining the Ashes.

Warner punched Root largely unprovoked but it wasn't a police matter and he was banned from the ICC Championship and the tour matches ahead of the Ashes.

I think England just want the police matter to be dealt with so it won't be hanging over like a dark cloud. But the Aussie media have just as many cnuts as the British media does and so will be generating pressure on the England team regardless.

That person who Stokes attacked has a fractured eye socket. Now I don't want to comment on it morally as there've been reports that Ben Stokes was defending his friends and other people from verbal attacks but I don't think legally he can go to Australia.

The earlier England forgot about Stokes and concentrate on the available XI, the better it'll be for them. Next match is a day night test match, perfect conditions for Anderson to exploit a weak Aussie batting.

Maybe I have a simpler view on life but almost 90% of people are cnuts. You're looking at over 6 billion cnuts. While I'd never advocate what he did, in the context of the world we live, is it really that bad to play him? I agree with you @Mitchell Nicholas, if England want to compete, they need him.

@FlawlessThaw I think the ECB find themselves in a very crappy situation. However, given just how much both teams care about that tiny urn, you'd think England would want to do anything to win. Even if it meant playing a mental bastard.

Well he is in NZ right now and has signed up to play for Canterbury. Aus may have different rules but he hasn't been charged with anything yet so I can't imagine they would stop him coming in.

Personally, I'd walk away from a confrontation of this sort or any sort, for that matter. I heard the guy was making homophobic remarks - not sure if this is fake or not. If Stokes was defending his friends for a justified reason, then I'd play him and you can understand why he fought the guy.

I was reading about it. If the police really wanted to drop charges, they'd have done it by now.

By all reports the guy was throwing around homophobic abuse, and can be seen with his mate waggling a bottle around.

I might not condone what Stokes did, but I have absolutely zero sympathy for a cnut getting sparked out for being a cnut.

Our media isn't that bad :smirk:. I do think though the media made a mountain out of a molehill. The headbutt isn't pretty but if it was as huge as it was made out to be, something would have been made of it when the incident happened.

I'm not sure, it certainly hasn't been a long time since the incident and its quite clouded because the victim is far from being an angel. Likewise if the police wanted to charge they would have done so by now as well given there is video evidence. Clearly want to make sure they don't make the wrong move.

Going off the media talk here it feels like talk about sledging is as important as the match itself.

Had a chuckle to read Anderson complaining about Aussies sledging. He's one of those who are happy to dish out but can't take it.

Mason Crane could come in for Ball, if reports that Ali can’t bowl are true

I think they've just announced the 12 man squad and he isn't involved, Craig Overton is the 12th man it looks like so Mason Crane misses out, they must be confident with Ali/Root.

I've seen a few places say this starts 03.30am and a few say 04.00am GMT, I don't want to be losing that extra half an hours vital sleep, so which one is it?

Ya.. Anderson always seems to be chirping when he bowls but can't take it back..

I think his complain about dangerous bowling by Aussies is interesting.. I didn't get that feeling while watching the highlights.. For those who have seen the whole game, did it feel dangerous??

England seamer James Anderson asked the umpire if Australia's bowling was dangerous during the first Ashes Test.

Anderson, England's number 11, was batting when number 10 Jake Ball received five successive bouncers in the second innings in Brisbane.

Under the laws of the game, umpires are allowed to intervene if they deem bowling to be dangerous.

"I mentioned it to umpire Marais Erasmus, but he didn't think it was too bad," Anderson, 35, told BBC Sport.

Chirping isn't the same as dangerous bowling.

And I've no idea. I haven't even managed to catch the highlights.

I didn't claim it was the same.. All I meant was that in just discussing about sledging, the comment of dangerous bowling got lost..

When that would actually make a better analysis instead of the he said she said stuff being debated now..

I didn't watch the full match either but I saw Root take a blast in the faceguard from Starc in the second innings. To be fair to Starc he was careful to ask after Root's welfare but if there was an inordinate amount of fast chin music served up I can see why Anderson might be wary.

Ahh, I see. Apologies.

Yeah, the sledging debates are tiresome.

Bet Joe Root feels a right muppet, couldn’t get a 2nd innings wicket at the GABBA, so thought it be a good idea to bowl 1st

Got him. England should look two or three wickets more today.

If Australia end up 5 or 6 down, it won't be that bad a decision. When it happened though, i thought it was his Nasser Hussain moment.
