England Cricket Winter 2017/18 - Ashes & NZ

Simple really
Hard for England to force a result, they need to still be batting at the end of the day, and then some of D5 as well

Don't bat the day, and I'd be fairly confident it's over, 1-0 to them

And here comes the collapse! Only a matter of time Ali is out with the way hes batting

Time for Ali and Bairstow to park the bus. Bat out at least today and try to salvage a draw.

Shocking collapse at the end.

He said: 'If you’re in a helicopter and you hover why does the Earth not come to you if it’s round?

'Why, if we’re hurtling through space, why would water stay still? Why is it not wobbling? Also if you fire a laser about 16 miles, if the world was curved, you shouldn’t be able to see it but you can.'

He added: 'The middle is the North Pole, around the outside is the South Pole which is like a big wall of ice. This is why all governments now have bases on the South Pole.'

Hahahahaah

This test simmered and fizzled out.

I have a slight concern that this is the best England can offer. Would like to see a competitive series..

Need to replace Jack Ball. Ali looks injured which is also a concern. They'll get Stokes for the next test I think.

Don't think we've played lyon well at all. Sure he's a fantastic bowler and bowls a very disciplined line to keep batsmen pressurised but the lack of using the feet and being slightly more aggressive played into his and Australia's hands. I think everyone was surprised how much the ball spun early on in the test. Must be more aggressive against Lyon further on in the series.

Bairstow being investigated by ECB now as it's emerging that he headbutted Bancroft during an incident in the bar.

What the feck is going on?

Does anyone know if BBC/Channel 5 show the highlights or is it entirely exclusive to BT Sports?

wtf

Depressing way to lose given that England were competitive for 90% of this test.

But its the issues that we identified miles out that are the issue: brainless batting, throwing wickets away, and not enough bowling talent.

If any of Vince, Malan, Stoneman, Root or Ali had converted a start into something more substantial (with most criticism going Vince's way for his daft runout in the first innings) then wed probably have won here.

What Lyon said last week makes a lot more sense now
“there’s going to be heated moments ... I’m all for it. There’s a line, we’ll headbutt the line but we won’t go over it.”

The timing and the lack of knowledge on the part of the ECB with respect to this incident to me suggests the timing of this story coming and the way it has been reported has been very deliberate. Either way the ECB must come down quite hard on this drinking culture that seems quite prevalent within this team. It's naive for the players to conduct themselves like this but also naive on the part of the ECB not to chaperone the players in flippin' Australia of all places.

As for the on pitch stuff, it's the same as we've consistently seen over the Bayliss era, starts and good periods but no ruthlessness. Root is symptomatic of this better than any other player really, so many 50s and not enough 100s, consistently good and sometimes great but he's now a step behind Kohli, Smith, Williamson etc.

Looks on like a nailed on 5-0 unfortunately, Adelaide is England's best chance at a win but with this news coming out...

I would be absolutely amazed if anything came out of it.

It happened weeks ago, the person involved doesn't want to take it further (and even carried on drinking with Bairstow after whatever happened) CA don't wish to pursue it, and the Australian police and the security have both washed their hands of it.

Damn right daft to be in a bar at all given the cloud over it, but it really doesn't seem like a serious incident at all.

It's the distraction of it all, whilst I agree the incident does not appear serious (I mean it was deemed insignificant enough to not tell anyone in the ECB) the Australian media will go to town over it. Instead of focusing on the 3 very good days of cricket and figuring out how to turn that into 5 days of very good cricket, questions will be over this incident and the culture within the team. That is not good preparation. The day of cricket England served up allied to this news gives the impression that everything is unravelling and the last thing the team needs to do in a moment is subscribe to that school of thought.

A batting line up containing Stokes, Bairstow and Ali would have given England the depth they need to avoid collapses like they have done. Wood is playing for the Lions before the 2nd test, hopefully he has a good game. He has that extra pace which would be useful on these pitches.

Exclusive to BT sadly, so no highlights anywhere, have had to listen to ball-by-ball commentary on BBC R5SX(Ch. 0144 on Sky)

Its a joke.

BT have done the same with the champions league highlights show as well. It wont be on free-to-air from next season.

FFS highlights should be on free TV at the very least. Also annoying how SSN can't even show the wickets, have to tune into Sky/BBC news for that.

Hate how so much is split between BT & Sky. The cnuts don't really care about consumers with the prices.

Bloody hell didn't know about that, for all their faults Sky were never that tight, but no doubt BT will be able to get away with it as long as they agree to both the Champions League and Europa League Finals being free-to-air.

Agree, it wouldn't be so bad if you could just subscribe to the Sports channels you want, I wouldn't know about BT, but with Sky Sports you have to pay for a Bundle(and most of the programs are on free-to-air elsewhere)just to get it.

BT seem hell-bent on crushing Sky at the minute, and as long as folk in Blighty have a home-phone, a mobile-phone and/or broadband with any provider other than Sky they'll have the money to do it, and it's people like us that will suffer(financially)

Maybe it's about time somebody reminded them that the 'B' in BT stands for British

Well it should be up to the government or either sporting associations to ensure that highlights packages were kept to terrestrial channels. It seems as though you would be happy for Murdoch to take full control of home phone, mobile and broadband to ensure Sky have a full monopoly on sporting rights.

BT don't care about viewer feedback. Their most liked football program - the European football shows - was cut off at the end of last season as a cost-cutting decision. Most of their other sports coverage doesn't have any presentation. It cuts to the program about five minutes before the start of whatever sport it is which makes me believe it's not BT's production but a syndicated broadcast [basically what Sky do when they show overseas test matches using the host nation's broadcast]

Yeah i'm Murdoch's biggest fan, I feel guilty everyday because I don't have home-phone, or broadband with Sky.

OT but it seems the flat-earth movement is actually growing in the west. I wonder what explains it.

I have never met a person who greets another person with a headbutt.. To think he tried to do that in Australia of all places during an Ashes series.. Good thing Bancroft seems a happy go lucky kind of guy.. This would have been a huge deal had he been a cnut like Ponting..

Crushing defeat for England.. Cook needs to start firing at the top.. He seems to have gone off the boil lately..

You've obviously never met the Dinner-Lady at my Primary School then :D

Suggestions of a conspiracy re Bairstow according Nick Hoult from the Telegraph:

“Relations between England and Australia will plummet now with the tourists suspecting a stitch up,” wrote the Telegraph’s Nick Hoult.

“Bairstow was given a send off by David Warner when he was out for 42 as the Australia players sledged him over the incident with Bancroft.

“Cricket Australia did not want to become involved last night but England suspect the Australians have allowed their media to fire bullets for them.”
