England Cricket Summer 17 - South Africa & West Indies

Apparently according to Cricinfo Moeen has three fifties and three centuries in 11 innings at number 7. His average is currently 95 at that number and is the highest by any Test batsman to have batted 10+ times at number 7.

Would not have picked Ballance, Jennings and Dawson. Ballance is still understandable given he has had a ridiculous county season but Haseeb is in talent wise another class as compared to Jennings whereas Dawson is a poor man's Jadeja.

What is England's obsession with picking mediocre spinners for their batting?

We just haven't got any quality spinners, simple as. Dawson offered better control when he bowled in India however he isn't very threatening. He is a bit like Giles.

He's such a good player to have coming in later in the innings. Being a Worcestershire boy I might have my tinted glasses on but I love him.

217 balls 177 runs against SA. Joe Root is ridiculous. Also shows that the pitch is quiet flat.

Amazing astonishing turnaround by England since lunch!!!

Wow. Just wow.

Serious credit to Root x3, Stokes and Ali.

Having 6 bowling options as passive as it is probably the right call then for England.

Root better in tests. Kohli in LOI.

Very good innings by Root. Worrying for England that he was the only one who played well for them. The rest of the batting line up is not very strong, as compared to their team in the 2009-13 time. If Cook, Root and Bairstow struggle, they could get into serious trouble. They need an Ian Bell or Trott type of player in there. Most Test teams have a player like that - Pujara, du Plessis, Ross Taylor.

AB one of my heroes was meant to play ODIs until 40 and Test cricket until 45 ffs why have you let me down oppa

It was hoped Balance would be that player but he hasn't stepped up as of yet.

England's top order has been a problem for a few years, saw a stat I'm sure it was last 23 out off 65 innings (last 3 years) England have lost 3 wickets for 55 or less, it's been the likes off Stokes and Alli that have got England to an acceptable total

feck that

Can't remember seeing a sloppier SA team in tests. No balls, drops, lack of reviews etc. Should have had this innings wrapped up for under 200.

Ahhh, Moeen :( So close! Another very good innings from the lad though!

Jimmy waltzing down the wicket and pulling you for six is retirement worthy.

I'm just glad to see Broad making a few runs again.

I'm not great with stats but I make it Moeen is the 28th player to achieve 2000 test runs and 100 wickets.

And that there are five with 4000 and 200.

Doable...

That de Bruyn review, I thought they changed the rules? It used to be the case that, for stump impact on LBW, you needed more than half the ball hitting to overturn not out and vice versa, but I thought they changed it to make it more the 'correct' decision rather than strongly favour the umpire's call?

Not enforced until October I think.

Surprised he gave it NO, looked for all the world that it was going to hit the stumps, Same with Stokes a while ago

Unless I'm mistaken isn't this change the one that we are talking about:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/1058755.html

I thought the changes in October was about not losing reviews on umpires call decisions.

Genuinely the first time I've seen an innings from Bevuma which comes remotely close to something you'd expect from an international cricketer.

Yeah you're right, I'd assumed they were together because I hadn't heard of this, I think the 3rd Umpire should make a judgement call to be honest none of hitting the stumps by XYZ nonsense.

It's a margin of error thing.

Because we know what the margin of error is (MIT extensively tested it) we know that when decisions get very, very close Hawkeye is not accurate enough to be able to say 100% that the ball is going to be hitting the stumps. If I remember right I think they actually could get away with bringing it in even more, but I think its fair enough to play it safe and avoid bringing errors into the game through the technology.
