England Cricket Summer 17 - South Africa & West Indies

Who would you have picked? Hameed and who else

Would not have picked Ballance, Jennings and Dawson. Ballance is still understandable given he has had a ridiculous county season but Haseeb is in talent wise another class as compared to Jennings whereas Dawson is a poor man's Jadeja.

What is England's obsession with picking mediocre spinners for their batting?

How has Haseeb Hameed not been picked.. totally forgot about him. Looked such a talent.

Not scoring any runs for Lancashire. Think the last time I checked he still hadn't passed fifty this season.

EDIT - 12 innings. Average of 19. Highest score of 47.

He's young and talented so doesn't seem a good idea to risk damaging his confidence by trying to get him to recover his form in international cricket.

Agree. This is test cricket not development cricket. Let him rediscover his touch for Lancs.

HS is 75 NO, Since then 12, 0, 9, 10, 18, 38*, 0, 2, 17, 23

Root's still there, so recovery is possible. Pretty dire so far, though.

My bad, that was in a one dayer
Seems to have had more success in that competition.

My suspicion is Hales gets another go, if Jennings or Ballance don't survive the rest of the series.

Fair enough was wondering what happened

Don't fret England supporters, this SA batting line up will be lucky to get to 200 against this attack.

fecking shocking from the third umpire. Clear no ball. Thankfully it didn't matter but jeeeeeeez

Is it me or have England's tops gone back to a cream colour?

But the sweater is bright white...

My missus has been complaining about the off-white all day :wenger:

Great job recovering the innings by Stokes & our fresh new captain. Go into tomorrow with 260+ & no more than 6 down, and I'll be pretty chuffed.

We are indeed back to cream and woolly jumpers.

Slow over rate punishments need revision. There is absolutely nothing forcing South Africa to abide by the rules when all they will suffer is Elgar, who won't captain the rest of the series, being told off.

Good bouncer! Surprised him.

I think I'd rather Dawson at 7 and Ali at 8. Moeen's really quite good at batting with tailenders.

Carry Job Root.

From the BBC site.

"When Joe Root reached 75 in today's innings he exceeded the number of runs scored for England by Geoffrey Boycott (9166) in all forms of International cricket in 19 FEWER innings. Root in five years, Boycott in eighteen years!"

Obviously a bizarre & totally ridiculous comparison, but still, pretty cool all the same.

Another excellent century from Root.

I'm actually put off by the new colour of the tops. Looks odd.

How many test records does Joe Root break if his back holds up? I honestly can't see Cook's records staying untouched.

Plenty. I can't believe it will, though.

Rabada making it a bit obvious he's had enough for now...

Don't SA have a better spinner than Maharaj? Looks very ordinary.

I noticed that too. I remember when England were the first nation to go to the extreme white, assumed everyone else would follow suit, but the didn't. Now we're in cream and the saffers are in white. Don't like it, back to white please.

Joe Root is class.

Considering the start, going along OK now. Good scoring rate has meant good runs on the board, if these two can survive until the close (which is a pretty big ask), England's middle-order can consider this a job very well done. If only the top 3 could sort themselves out, you cannot build a top test side with such a brittle start almost every innings.

From the BBC live feed...

Joe Root is the Steven Gerrard of English cricket - he's a level above the rest of the team. Equally for Gary Ballance see Djimi Traore!

Craig from Norwich

How dare he disparage Root like that!

If Steven Gerrard performed for England as well as Root does, then England would've won the World Cup.

Michael Holding with his mathematical equations haha

Great knock for your first test as captain. That's one way to settle some nerves.
