Emiliano Sala: Rest In Peace

I don't think it was his choice Cardiff made a fuss about wanting him over as quick as possible so he could start playing .

They're not playing this weekend so guess it's light training and days off this week and real preparation would start Thursday-Friday for their game next Tuesday.

That said if it was Sala's first day I doubt he'd have wanted to cause issues by arriving late and claiming it was due to a faulty aircraft so can sadly understand why he thought the chances of an accident were very minimal.

Still some hope they have survived.

There is no hope, it will be like Leicester I'm afraid. Just hope the authorities can find everything they need to find so the family can get closure and we can hear what went wrong.

Just a poor timing by Ronaldo, hope he deleted the tweet though.

Was it some old plane Sala flew with?

Yep, although there’s not a chance he personally posted that. Shows the potential issues with letting a PR team do it for you though.

It's people like yourself and Lineker who create the issues that aren't there. You two should pat yourselves on your backs.
You can disagree that it's not inconsiderate or at the very least bad timing, fair enough. But there's a time and place for everything imo and this was neither imo.

It's not looking good now :(

As bad as it sounds I hope that is a real quote and not some bullshit someone has made for 'likes'.

Also, people rushing in here to stick it to Ronaldo are pathetic.

Not a fake quote :(:(:(

Cardiff did make a fuss about him arriving earlier than Nantes wanted though. Nantes wanted him to play one last game before finalising the deal which annoyed Cardiff.

For the record I'm sure Ronaldo didn't know what had happened when he Tweeted that. It should be deleted though. I just can't believe someone actually brought up "well he's a Messi fan so..." over this

Whatever, but I'm pretty sure if it was Messi who had posted it, he probably wouldn't take the same view. He'd probably view it more like I'm viewing it.

What was the purpose of him quoting it exactly? He knew how the masses would react especially being that it's Ronaldo.

Virtue signalling. Lineker loves doing it. It wasn't a greatly timed tweet from Ronaldo but there was no need for Gary to draw even more attention to it when it was obviously just an unfortunate coincidence. If he really cared about the sensitivity of it, I'm sure he would know how to get in touch with Ronaldo's people directly rather than calling it out to the world.

Jug Ears just likes to pontificate. He thinks his opinions are important to the country.

Attention seeking constantly.

Nope. Even worse:

Everything surrounding it makes it seem like it really wasn't safe at all. Awful stuff.

These small planes are always bumpy and far more susceptible to bad weather. That's just how it is. Certainly doesn't make them unsafe. Naturally the larger the plane the more stable it is.

That said, I wouldn't be particularly keen on flying a route over a large expanse of water after dark in one.. But many thousands of flights will be flown in just these circumstances every day. Just bad luck really. Accidents happen, poor bugger.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers - (314)
BY EMILY DICKINSON
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

It costs nothing.

Just a realist folks.

If he'd set off early in the morning (6-7am) they'd have been slightly more hope for me as then the rescue teams have hour and hours of daylight to work with for an aircraft that's recently gone down.

Disappearing off radar in darkness and then missing during the night (and two nights now) and you have to be realistic about things.

Exactly.

So heartbroken man...Emiliano is an Independiente fan, he dreamed with playing for us. He even copied our striker's celebration there in France.

Hope he's okay and can fulfill his dreams one day.

Why fly your record signing in a small crap plane.. I thought there was enough commercial airplanes going to Cardiff?
Their Chairman said he made his own flying arrangements. I think he only went back to Nantes to say goodbye, he'd already been over to Cardiff and signed etc.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up.

Makes it even more wierd if the quotes are true about him beeing scared to fly back.

Still tragic. Feel for the families, losing loved ones in a early age is hard to take. I have experienced that several times in my life. Still have scars from that.

He’s an insufferable prick on twitter. Wish he’d wind his neck in.

surely they'll find the remains of the plane though?

I doubt it. As others have previously mentioned, it was a small aircraft and so it would be difficult finding something like that in such large volume of water. Also, with strong currents around that area, who knows where the debris will end up. I don't think we will ever find out what happened as I doubt they will find the black box.

Came across this thread from reading one on another forum.....alleged the pilot wasn't "instrument rated" so had to fly low which could've caused more issues?

Edit: Great quote from this poster:

When things need to happen at short notice in the football business then you take the resource that's available at the time. A lot in the business is fudged and sorted out however and whenever - it is run in a surprisingly amateur manner considering the amounts of money involved.

A number of different people could have been responsible for arranging this player's transport. It could have been either of the two clubs involved, his agent, some shadowy 'fixer' or even himself. I doubt any of those people would have much of a clue about the risks involved in different types of light aircraft, nor would they much care - until something goes wrong.

It's amazing isn't it how even a bit of knowledge leads us to take a totally different view? If my employer decided I needed to be ferried over the channel in a high performance light aircraft in last night's weather, then I'd have been all over the whole thing like a rash. I'd be checking the weather to the nth degree, sussing out the pilot and learning all I could about the aircraft. I'd have been acutely aware of press-on-itis. But someone with no interest in aviation at all (excuse the assumption), he just gets on the plane when he's told and trusts that everything will be fine....

The plane probably didn’t even have a black box.

"Need to happen at short notice." It wasn't deadline day.

True but his first training session was scheduled for I think sometime on Tuesday and he was in Nantes on Monday evening so clearly wanted to get there quickly rather than take a normal flight which may have been held up (same for Eurostar from Paris).

Anyway last 20 minutes The Times are claiming this plane belonged to football agent Wille Mckay and he was said to be representing Cardiff in this deal so we'll see if that was true or not.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/8261960/plane-sala-willie-mckay/

Based in Monaco. I remember his name from years back when Doncaster randomly ended up with Chimbonda and El Hadji Diouf playing for them and he was the "brains" behind the operation.

You can disagree that it's not inconsiderate or at the very least bad timing, fair enough. But there's a time and place for everything imo and this was neither imo.

So should we condemn stuff like the BBC “Higuain flies to London for a medical” report then?

I agree. The football community is small, and this was big news yesterday. In my opinion, Rondalo should habe more self awareness.

Yes, I actually believe all air traffic should be cancelled until they're found.

Was it not the cardiff's owners plane ?

I agree with this. It's not a horrible misjustice, just shitty timing and an unneeded post. I would say it was his team that posted it on a schedule, so it wouldn't be Ronaldo's fault. But should be taken down for the time being.

Been on worse planes than this one countless times.

I’ve been a passenger on light aircraft where desk fans have been masking taped to the ceiling for cool air, cockroaches have ran across the floor, sudden drops of altitude for a whole hour, shared the cabin with a cages of live chickens, once I pilot turned around to offer his packet of boiled sweets to passengers.

I’ve sweat, prayed and closed my eyes on multiple flights in these 3rd world countries (and I’ve never been scared of flying). Yet I still got in the very same aircraft again a couple of days later.

Without knowledge of aviation, you trust that the plane meets some sort of standards, the pilot is correctly trained, and hope for the best.

I think anyone who says they wouldn’t have got on that plane is talking nonesense.

- just a tragic accident, heart goes out to his family

The aircraft model he was flying on is the "Piper PA-46," a light aircraft that holds 1 pilot and 5 passengers. First introduced in the 80s; it is actually known for it's frequent accidents and inability to handle adverse weather conditions which is what Emiliano's plane likely encountered when he reached the English Channel from France which is where the aircraft lost radar contact. It really is devastating.

Also, the audio of him speaking about being scared and the plane looking like it's about to fall apart was allegedly sent when he was still on the ground. He was supposedly saying it because he really wasn't impressed by it. That's why he later then added the line "If you don't hear from me in an hour and a half, I dunno if people will come to look for me." It was said in jest but turned out to be an utterly tragic coincidence. Condolences to his family.
Like I wrote in a earlier post here the plane was an odd choice to say the least. An oversea flight with winds 15-20 m/s with a single engine is really not what this plane was designed to do.. Its usually used for inland trips. Plains and fields in the USA for example.
I'm not sure to be honest. Need one of our resident pilots. @arthurka
Normally not no.. The regulations are pretty simple actually.
Voice recorder
Large 4-engine turbine powered
Large 4-engine pressurized planes
Multi 10+ passengers
Multi 20+ passengers
Multi with rotor 6+ with 2 pilots

Flight data
Multi or rotor 10+
Multi or rotor 6+ with two pilots
Large planes operating over 25.000 ft
Large turbine powered airplanes
Turbine transport CAT planes

The Piper PA46 has many subtypes but the 350T Matrix has de-icing and autopilot and a traffic advisory system. But only the M500 and the M600 have a ceiling above 25000ft.

The plane belonged to an agent who's based in Monaco (not Sala's agent but someone that apparently did work on the deal). Someone at Cardiff has said they offered to book Sala on to a commercial flight but he chose to make his own arrangements.

Edit: The agent who owns the plane is Willie McKay

From the Cardiff Chairman, Mehmet Dalman:

“We spoke to the player and asked him if he wanted us to make arrangements for his flight which, quite frankly, would have been commercial. He declined and made his own arrangements.

“I can’t tell you who arranged the flight because I don’t know at this stage - but it certainly wasn’t Cardiff City.”

If Messi posted it it would be far worse given there would be a much lower presumption of ignorance given the nationalities involved, in my opinion. But Messi didn’t post this. I don’t know why I’m engaging this hypothetical since it’s you making this a “Messi v Ronaldo” discussion.

I can’t read into Linekar’s head, you’re the expert at that, but perhaps he thought the photo should be taken down (it really, really should) and reacted quickly and emotionally to seeing it? Perhaps he thought if he did it would be taken down? Or maybe just “this will help Messi win the meme wars against Ronaldo.”

You have to assume Ronaldo or whoever on his PR team posted that photo didn’t know what had happened when they did so, just by basic human standards of decency. Then again, it’s still up 18 hours later, which is even worse than posting it-probably unaware- in the first place.
