I haven't read up on this tragedy for some time but I remember the rumours going around regarding the flight arrangements at the time.
Cardiff wanted Sala to fly on a commercial flight but the striker wanted an extra day to say his goodbyes in France. Willie McKay then allegedly arranged the flight through Henderson as he had done many times previously and Ibbotson was booked to fly the aircraft at short notice, even though he wasn't qualified to carry paying passengers, to fly at night or in bad weather.
An important point in all this was that Willie McKay's agents licence was revoked at the time and he would have been banned from taking part in the deal although his son Mark was apparently acting as the selling agent for Nantes.
Whether this version of events has been disproven since is up for debate but it was certainly an illegal flight and a young man lost his life due to negligence.

In a statement, Cardiff City said that there "has been selective reporting" of its defence filed against its insurance brokers.
It said: "The club did not try to insure Emiliano after the plane crash.
"All Cardiff City Football Club staff understood from its broker that all players were insured from the moment they were signed, and the case arises from learning they were not.
"It will reply to the allegations made in the defence that are untrue, or portrayed out of context, in the court proceedings and will not litigate this case in the media."

Not sure why people are so quick to believe the word of the insurer. They'll say and do anything to get out of paying out on a claim.

The whole insurance business is a big conflict of interest. It is in the interest of the insurance company not to pay out what their clients are owed. No surprise that they do everything in their power to weasel out of doing so.

You want them to pay every claim? As an actuary who has worked at an insurance company, the point people don't understand is that if insurance companies start to pay out every claim without any due diligence then the cost of premiums will also increase substantially.

When it comes to health insurance, I also believe it should not be in the hands of private companies who have to make a profit. A person's health should not be subject to a company deciding how much profit they want to make. Basic health care should be fully government covered and not subject to buying private health insurance (no hospital costs).

When it comes to life insurance, that I'm fine with private firms selling products.

Cardiff City Football Club filed a complaint in a French court on Monday against Football Club de Nantes, claiming losses of more than £100m following a dispute over striker Emiliano Sala's death in a plane crash in January 2019.

A figure of 120.2m euros (£104m) was estimated after "an in-depth analysis" by a legal expert, the Welsh club's lawyer Celine Jones said.

Jones said this analysis has been filed at the Nantes Commercial Court in western France, which gave the French club until 23 September to respond.

"We'll take the time to study these new voluminous documents and these figures," said lawyers representing Nantes, Jerome Marsaudon and Louis-Marie Absil.

Sala, a 28-year-old Argentine striker, and pilot David Ibbotson died in a plane crash on 21 January 2019 while travelling to south Wales from France to complete a £15m transfer from Nantes to the Bluebirds.

The Welsh club opted to take separate legal action against Nantes after the Swiss Federal Tribunal decided the Court of Arbitration in Sport (CAS) did not have jurisdiction to deal with the Bluebirds' claim for damages.

A Cardiff statement, published following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, stated damages sought were to "recover what the club paid for Emiliano" and for "additional damages for further consequential losses".
 
This is weird, the guy who organised the plane and the pilot went to jail for it.

Did Nantes hire the plane or pilot? If not, they shouldn't have a case to answer.

If David Henderson did it all, it's him they should be looking for damages from.
 
I always get a twinge of sadness every time I see this thread bumped. He knew it didn’t look safe and he trusted those around him to look after his welfare. It’s just really sad.

This might be one of the most immoral things I can remember seeing from a football club. The lengths Cardiff have gone to save themselves a few quid in tragic circumstances like these are sickening. Have some shame.
