Edward Woodward

As a Man United fan with literally zero insight into the inner workings of the club, I have to say it is a joke that this man, who is incredibly overqualified and experienced in his job, has not yet signed us Ronaldo. Frankly his presence is an insult to the game and to man utd at large and we shouldn't stop protesting and fighting the glazers until he is either lynched or we get even the tiniest insight into what it is he actually does.

The Equalizer did come out with the no retooling interview which let's be honest did not inspire much confidence. Whether he was carpet bagging or not, it just seemed to dampen fans hopes of adding quality to the first 11 let alone the squad. He's very much a Glazer man, and these low bid appears to be someone in a new job trying hard to please his masters.

If we got him for that price then it would make perfect sense. You never know til you try. All Everton are whining about is the fact we're not going in with some stupid going rate price. Well tough titty. We're Manchester United. We think your player is worth this much and we may improve it a little bit. they went public with it. Not us. Not our fault if they don't like it.

Seems to me that Woodward is still concentrating on his previous job, ie commercial development. He has no experience in transfers and so far has made a complete hash of the deals he has attempted. I am wondering if the answer is a Director of Football appointment as other clubs have.

What do Director's of Football do? Thought the Woodward type folks still negotiate the deals even when there is a Director of Football. Director of Football might make sense if it was Moyes that was out of his depth in terms of identifying the right type of targets for the club - which he doesn't seem to be.

That's true but don't Directors of Football help identify targets and liaise with the Manager and Chairman? Could only help seeing as Moyes spends more time on coaching than SAF. Maybe the problem is that Moyes has not had the chance to assess who he wants. He is known to have had a comprehensive system for identifying transfer targets at Everton, but Maybe he was looking at a lower level of players there.

Don't see how a DoF would help. That would take responsibility away from Moyes, not Woodward.

Well you state that, but his job description on the club website suggest he still has a role in this area.

Edward Woodward, aged 40, is Executive Vice Chairman and a Director of the Company. He was appointed to our board of directors on April 30, 2012 and is currently the Executive Vice Chairman of Manchester United Limited (UK), having been elected to its board of directors in February 2008. He is also director of Manchester United Merchandising Limited and MUTV and is on the Marketing Committee of the European Clubs Association.

Master of the house
We will buy for sure
The only problem is
There are so few
millions thrown on Fab
much less for Baines
Fees are too high these days
When the fans complain
Just rely on Paddy Crerand
He is a top red
The one perfect Missus
He wont bite his feeding hand

For someone who by a lot of accounts did very well for Glazers to acquire United and then in growing our commercial business and the United brand, it is disappointing to see how poorly we've done in this transfer market. In the manner we go about it, in our ability to line up, secure & close deals, they are a marked departure from how we dealt with them in the past and very poor in comparison. I think the United image has taken big knocks this summer. In the past, either we're successful with our targets very early or ultimately or we're very quick to secure our plan Bs and plan Cs. We're none of them this summer.

This could be posted in any number of threads and it's not directed at Woody in particular. I wonder how brilliant the philosophy promote-from-within is if what's within is not good enough. I mean, Carlos Queiroz was one of the best things to happen during the SAF era. Expertise and experience on a world level. He brought freshness. Now it seems we are going for continuity and that's commendable in a lot of ways, but only if those put in new positions are the best we can get or damn near to it.

I hope the new coaching set-up will click and produce results, tactical flexibility and a generally attacking style of play. But I wouldn't be averse to us actually thinking if we are the biggest club or one of (which we are) the biggest, that we should match that, in everything we do. Coaching personnel, player acquisition, style of play etc.

More than anything, I'd like to see that mentality reflected in our players´ performances consistently.

If we do not seriously strengthen, I will be inclined to believe that we were never going to and there is little money to spend

I just read that Bolingbroke used to manage a circus... It's all starting to make sense now!

Yep. We have ourselves a spacegoat.

The fact that he looks the spit of Ian Hislop does him no favours whatsoever because let's face it...who likes Ian Hislop? Not even Mrs Hislop.

I like Ian Hislop :nervous:

Woodward has proven himself to be nothing but useless. Should just stick to bring in sponsors or whatever. He was good at that.

The thing is he's generally responsible for some (not all) of our failings this summer. Obviously Moyes told him he wants Fellaini and Baines (at least 2 months ago since the first Baines bid) yet 24 hours before the window shuts and he's not delivered. I mean Fellaini even had a fooking buyout clause, it's not like Moyes asked for Messi and Bale.

yeah!! He's witty, amusing and says stuff that annoys a lot of politicians/celebs. Whats not to like!! :p

Granted but he also does that really annoying squinty eye thing when he thinks he's said something really funny that just makes me want to punch him in the face.

I imagine Ed does something similar when he faxes over his £25m bid.

Thats a given! I imagine he probably walks up to a mirror and starts going "who's da man Eddy? I'm da fecking man!"

Lets hope Eddy has not decided to have a lie in or even to take a day off today....

Also, hope he has learnt some lessons from the last few weeks and realises making half baked bids do not wash with anyone.

Eddy will probably be the most hated man in England tomorrow. So he took the day off to brace himself.

Seconded. I don't know how this summer would have panned out with Gill, but I am almost certain we would have made at least 1 signing. This is pretty poor.

1 signing = Varela? (sp? - that Uruguayan kid)

;)

Just kidding. I agree. This summer has seen a total shift from how quietly and efficiently we use to do our transfer business.

If Woody fails this summer window, I am pretty sure he will be looking over his shoulder.

With a new manager coming in especially after an iconic one, any club would spend generously to show support for the incoming manager. We will find out in the next few hours if he knew what the feck he he's been doing or not.

Shopping at Harrods, asking for Tesco prices. WTF!

So we replaced Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill with the plucky guy from Everton and Ed Wood. And people were expecting us to NOT completely and immediately fall apart?

Whatever happens today his first transfer window is a shambles. Not necesarilly a failure, but a shambles.

We've failed to close out the deals quickly, haggling over prices and offering silly amounts for unattainable players.
If we were serious about our business we could've had Fellaini wrapped at the start of July for less than we'll pay for him. We end up looking like he was a Plan B, which he might have been. But then to spend about two weeks trying to do a no-go deal in Fabregas, while we could've wrapped up Herrera or someone else and had them ready for our incredibly tough start to the campaign... I mean seriously, Woodward?

I think he's too shrewd a businessman to pay over the odds for players, which sadly you're going to have to do when the whole footballing world knows you're two midfielders short of a functioning midfield - doesn't matter how many times David Moyes talks about us having a fantastic squad.
