Edward Woodward

Well it has been reported numerous times that Woodie has been working hard with transfer dealings and as the CEO he should make the big decisions. But of course he could just be a scapegoat and they pretend that he is the one officially handling transfers and sending low bids to other clubs meanwhile he is actually tied to a chair with a sock in his mouth hidden in a basement somewhere. :)

Being tied to a chair could explain why it takes him so long to fly between places. He can't get free to get of the plane so keeps getting sent back.

Don't know why so many people would assume Woodward is doing anything different as CE than Gill did. It was Gill's job to get the deals done, negotiate financial packages, etc. So why would we consider for a moment that someone who is not a CE would now be doing that role and not Woodward? There is no indication of that, he is Gill's replacement, and until we hear otherwise it's reasonable to assume that accountability for failing to get the deals done is his and his alone. As we would have done with Gill.

Bottom line for me is that Woodward has got pretty much everything wrong so far. From player valuations, to building a reasonable discourse with clubs where clear parameters are set into how the deal can be achieved. We haven't had a deal yet where we even looked like we were getting anywhere near advanced talks with any of the clubs in question. It goes: inadequate bid, then unsurprising rejection, then nothing for a week or two, and despite a further fortnight of discussions and preparing second bids, we make yet another insufficient bid, that is again rejected. What type of negotiating and planning is going on here, where even after weeks of discussion we don't even get one accepted bid and an opportunity to speak with the target?

If we go for Bale and don't get him, Woodward's position must be under threat. His methods have been bizarrely unproductive, non progressive and ultimately unsuccessful. Add yet another super high profile failure and I don't really know how he can keep his job with any credibility remaining. It might seem harsh, but unless he comes up with something fast fans will want to know why we have seemed to have been so active, yet failed to get past first base in most f the cases. Has to be said the way we have conducted our business has been the problem, and the CE has to be responsible for that.

It's possible that we (including me) have blamed the wrong person for our impotence in the transfer market. As the football man, isn't it likely that DM would have the final say in the valuation of players? And that's essentially the problem - our valuations have been too low.

My preliminary impression of Moyes is that he's determined to keep his job, and thinks the best way to do that is to stick with what he knows and take no risks. He's maybe looked at our squad, and believes it's good enough to get second or third, and possibly even nick first, if Chelsea and City don't do the business, with the inexpensive addition of someone like Fellaini, who he knows can do a job. We're unlikely to do much in Europe, but he won't get fired over that - even Fergie hasn't done well in the CL in recent years.

He won't take chances in team selection - no kids; or in player acquisition - no flair players like Thiago or Ozil; or even in asking for a club record sum, say £40m, for Cesc Fabregas, who could fail conspicuously and leave him vulnerable.

Keep your head down, do what worked for you at Everton, don't spend too much of the owner's money, and you should navigate the tricky waters of your first season to the safe harbour of CL qualification.

I'll make the daring prediction that we're not going to spend big money on anybody before the end of the window. :D

{£80m bid for Gareth Bale tomorrow. :lol:}

We have a CEO in charge who hates to spend money....are we turning into Arsenal?

I would imagine so. This isn't remotely the same as Moyes having the final say.

Yes, it is. There's not much point in Woodward asking Moyes, "What do you think Fabregas is worth?' and Moyes replying, "£40m", and then Woody making a final offer of £30m. He'd be undermining Moyes and preventing him getting the players he needed. That is, if the owners have sanctioned large expenditure.

I'd imagine a club of Manchester United's stature has a more sophisticated valuation process than that. I doubt it's as simple as asking the manager "what do you think he's worth?".

That's Brazilian, I'm thinking possibly more Paraguayan. I believe "Tyres" is actually pronounced to rhyme with Pires (as in Robert).

I don't understand how anyone could think that of Moyes. He inherited a team that won the league by a landslide and now he'd think his aim has to be the top 3 or the "safe harbour of CL qualification"? No, he'll want to win the title and nothing less, because he understand that's expected at a club like United. And I'm sure Fergie wouldn't have handpicked him if he wasn't sure Moyes would understand that. I think he'll want to win every competition, just like Fergie.

If you offered Moyes a close 2nd place finish in the league this season, I suspect he'd take it.

Remember the excitement when "boarding plane due to urgent transfer business" was added to the thread title? That plus star names like mata and fabregas flying around, "the most exciting transfer window ever" cafites chanted!

Little did they know it was the start of two months of rejections and nothing. Lulz.

It's not even rejections that's the thing Kevin. There's been nothing to reject as we haven't made a decent bid (which has been disclosed to the media) for any player this summer. Still... a few days left, Woody better get... hard at work...

Imagine Woody trying to buy something in a grocery store.

No wonder, he looks like a feckin skeletor in the making.

"How much is this loaf of bread?"
"That loaf retails at £1.74."
"Ill give you 50p for it."
"No. It costs 1.74. Im insulted by that offer. Please leave my shop."
"Ill be back next week when Ive had a chance to assess my finances further."

Then Moyes would appear from nowhere to add: "if I'd been shop keeper and had come asking for bread, I'd have found it very difficult to keep it because I always felt the right thing to do was what was right for the baked goods."

Well, if I was a newly appointed United manager, determined to win stuff, and I was offered a blank cheque to go out and buy players, I wouldn't come home with Marouane Fellaini in my arse pocket.

a week later

"So you're back!"
"Yepp, I had ample time to think and..."
"And?"
"Here's 50p for a loaf of bread"
"Feck off"
"You know that you need the money"
"Go out or else..."
"What about me giving you 75c for two loaves of bread?"
The shop keeper ends up calling the police.

How can You laugh, Redsky ? Seriously how... can... you...
