Edinson Cavani

As I said, it's not something I can put my finger on. Just something about him gives me that impression when I'm watching him. I just don't think he's all he's cracked up to be.

Really Benteke and Michu are among the top scorers and you think Cavani will struggle? Hopefully he does come over he gives more than Falcao would he is a truly great player people tend to underrate Serie A it is a tougher league to score in than over here.

Yeah, because none of their players have ever played football. Ever.

It's a silly statement. They will become a strong force undoubtedly but proclaiming them as the best team before the season has started is silly. You only have to look at how City were cited as the best team before last season started, and yet United ended up at the top.

Were they? They finished level on points with us and didn't bring anyone particulary known while we brought the best player in the league and Kagawa.

I meant on paper obviously. I think they alreadt had a solid squad in place last season but without a proper manager they couldn't make the best out of it. This time they do have a world class manager.

Wish the money clubs would start buying the players Chelsea really want. Cavani would be a brilliant signing for them. Lukaku is nowhere near ready to step up to the task on all fronts and I don't think he will be within 2 years either. A real handful he is, but I think he lacks the class that the top players show, even at such a young age.

Sigh. Please show me where I said he will struggle.

I said I don't think he's World Class. That I don't think he'll be as effective over here as he is over there. That I think he's a very good player.

They did and won the league on a goal difference. I obviously meant the 2011-12 season.

Confusing because you mentioned starting the season with RVP and Kagawa, but they weren't brought in that season.

He said they were cited as the best team in the league and I said that I doubt it because they'd only just finished level on points with us and we strengthened more than they did.

Doing worst than your level over the last 3 years would mean struggling for me. But fair enough I misunderstood you. He really is at least as good as all the other top strikers out there no reason why he would not do as well. But like you said it is just a feeling.

Last season as in the season recently gone by. And yes, people were stating that City had the best squad. Google is being a silly willy and doesn't let me search the caf for quotes for now so I have to comeback (in another thread, with respect to this one).

Well, you're probably right and I trust you on this. I thought we were pretty equal last season but the lack of midfield signing made me think that City might edge it again.

I'm not saying Chelsea will win the league at all, there are lots of different factors that will affect that. I just think that on paper their first XI will be very balanced and the strongest one in the league. Their squad should also improve too but I won't be shocked if they finish 2nd or 3rd.

If they manage to bring Cavani, Matic (or another good defensive midfielder) and a good centre half they will have the best team in the league, comfortably.

Mehh possibly, but it clearly depends who we and City bring in.

If we sort out our centre mid then we have the best squad in the league, they clearly need far more investment that we do and have a pretty small squad which tells over the season.

Why? If anything defences are stronger in Serie A than they are in England, he's a top class forward and he's still young. He won't be coming there on the basis of a rather poor season like Torres or Shevchenko either.

It is not just about the football though, the last time I heard about it he couldn't speak English, he will be going to London from Napoli. From only ever speaking two very similar languages(Spanish/Italian) to having to learn English. It is very mentally frustrating to go from fluent in a language to absolute dogshit in another. It is hard to present yourself the way you want to and it may very well affect his confidence

The psychological part is as big or bigger than the tactical differences.

Indeed, it is hard to judge them on their status after transfers and compare it to us before we make any.

I think we are in the most difficult boat regardless of having the best squad going in to this transfer-window.

City and Chelsea have pretty much picked themselves and it is quite obvious where they need to strengthen. We have to first sort out which tactic we will deploy, then we need to sort out what "out-of-form players" can get back on track and who can't, then we have a transfer request from our arguably biggest star.

Napoli striker Edinson Cavani has told Sky Sports it would be a pleasure to play under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.
Cavani, who scored against the Blues for Napoli in the UEFA Champions League last year, reportedly has a £53m buy-out clause, but that hasn't stopped him from being linked with Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris St-Germain.
The Uruguay international is currently preparing for the Confederations Cup in Brazil, where he discussed his future.
When asked about the interest of Chelsea and Manchester City, he said: "I don't know if they made an offer for me, I just know that to be coached by someone like Manuel Pellegrini or Jose Mourinho would always be a pleasure.
"And when the time is right it would be great to play for one of these teams, because when I was a child I imagined doing it - but now I am only thinking about Uruguay. In my career I have always had to deal with rumours of me signing for another team and I just have to keep my feet on the ground."
Cavani also talked about working with new Napoli manager Rafa Benitez.
"I don't know, I think there are other factors that could change my future. I have a contract with Napoli but on the other hand there are some conversations but everything is uncertain at the moment," he continued.
"What I know is that I belong to Napoli, that I'm thinking about my national team because we have a very difficult qualifying game and we also have a difficult tournament [Confederations Cup] to deal with and after all these commitments I'll think about what is going to happen."
Cavani was also asked about his international team-mate Luis Suarez, who is looking to quit Liverpool and the Premier League.
"It depends on many things. I think that English football fits him very well because it is the kind of play that he likes but at the end it is about a personal decision," he said.
He also defended Suarez, who is currently banned in England for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.
"These things happen in life when you are on the pitch you are really excited and you have to deal with some situations you are not used to," he said.
"It's not fair to judge a person for one thing on the pitch when there is a match going on and you are extra excited and sometimes you make a mistake.
"The most important thing is that he has recognised he has made a mistake.
"He is the only person who knows where he will play, I don't know what my future will be so I can only guess about another people."

Clearly not a very ambitions child.

He dreamt of playing third tier football with Shaun Goater and Paul Dickov or finishing midtable and going on the beer with Gavin Peacock and Denis Wise.

I think what he really meant was that he dreamed of playing for a team with a top manager.

He meant top teams and managers Chelsea and City have both now.

Have you watched him in the league at all? It's a bit unfair to judge him on his first CL campaign and his national team performances given a host of top players have underperformed in both. 4 goals in 4 games v Chelsea and City in that somewhat underwhelming CL campaign suggests he'll have no trouble against English teams. He definitely wasn't at his best in any of those games but then neither was van Persie in a fair few of the big games he played in, the important thing was they got the goals despite that. He doesn't have the silky skills of van Persie or the raw power of Drogba so I can see why he's no immediately impressive but I think you're seriously underestimating him. He was a one-man team at various points this year and that's for a team who was competing for the title. Napoli have proven themselves to be just as good as City (if not better) over the past couple of seasons and he's shown he can play against the top English sides so I'm surprised anyone thinks he'll struggle to bring his Serie A form to England.

It's not based on much at all. I've probably only seen him live no more than 15 times. Just an impression I get when I watch him. I guess we'll see soon enough.

When Cavani was nine, Chelsea had Gullit, Vialli and Zola in their ranks. Doesn't mean, of course, that Cavani was watching them then or was dreaming of playing for Chelsea at the time, but I knew quite a few kids, who idolized those players.

Again, I must apologise for making light of a player's comments. I'll try to amend my behaviour in future.

In recent days, Edinson Cavani has revealed that he is talking to other clubs, despite being under contract with Serie A side Napoli. Now, his mother has given an interview on Uruguayan radio in which she has named the teams that her son is in contact with: Real Madrid and Manchester City.
“Edi is talking to Madrid and City,” said Berta Gómez, who regularly speaks to the media about her son. She then went on to suggest that Chelsea – under former Madrid coach José Mourinho – are trailing in the race for the player’s signature. “The Napoli president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, has spoken to Chelsea but there’s nothing concrete.”
Gómez even proposed a time-scale for Cavani’s transfer, declaring: “In fifteen or twenty days we’ll know his destination. When there’s something concrete, his family will be the first to know. In any case, I assure you that Edinson loves Napoli and if he has to leave, he’ll never forget the love and affection shown by the people there.” http://as.com/diarioas/2013/06/13/english/1371133533_173026.html

The Mum thing is a bit weird.

I hope Madrid get him rather than City. Get the feeling Perez would be pushing harder if there had been elections.

It was what he said about City getting around FFP that was the best bit

Very pleased with that. Sadly with Aguero and Tevez they've already got 2 top strikers, but I can't see Chelsea splashing out another £50 million on a striker after the last disaster. So that just leaves Lewandowski as the only top striker left for City or Chelsea to buy, unless I'm forgetting someone?
