Edinson Cavani - SIGNED for United

I don’t think he’s ready to be a striker and wouldn’t want to put that pressure on him, I like him on the wing but also think he needs cover there too, it doesn’t have to necessarily be a £120m signing right now and the lack of that signing is affecting people’s mood regarding other signings imo
I do think £120m in today’s climate is a lot, I am not opposed to bringing someone else in for less money if they are good enough quality, names like Ocampos, Sarr and Bale were mentioned I think they would be okay but ultimately Sancho would be the obvious solution.

I think the frustration with the Sancho transfer is clouding people’s judgement on this deal. Cavani, if he can’t stay fit, can still be good for us and if we land Sancho he can be very good with genuine quality coming through the middle and wide. Also the other forward can learn a lot from him.

We can't afford wages for both Sancho AND Cavani.
It is either/or. Not both.
I'd love to be wrong, but I will be proved right in 36 hours.

The positives

Free agent--no transfer fee
we need a striker
He is or was a world class striker
The others can learn from him
He can play in the wings too

The negatives

he will be 34 soon
He is a spent force
He might be here just for the money
He maynot have the desire or hunger
He has history of injuries
If true - 2 years with 200 k maybe too much
No other big club wanted him
He hasnot played much last season

So in general he is kind of a high risk buy.

You should know better. Cavani is the sort of busted flush signing that Chelsea have specialised in when it comes to centre forwards.

It seems do know better as I've been through it all!

If Cavani flops it'll be a Pizarro equivalent, not a Torres or Sheva equivalent. Nobody will really give a shit because he cost nothing, is not on crazy wages and won't be stinking up the place for years.

No you said it was done this way to save 1.7M, which makes no sense.

Why that so hard to understand when we already have a back up striker available? You are treating the signing as a first team player that should have been signed at the start of the window.

I think we both agree he’d be a great signing but not the be all and end all. I’d love nothing More than Greenwood making that wing his own for a good few years and having cover for him. Rather than him being cover for a winger/striker

The disapointment here is that this is the opposite from what Ole wants and how he said he looked for reinforcements.

Glazers out!

I don’t think getting Cavani affects Sanches wages, everything reported (believe it or not) suggests it’s the fee that’s the issue.

Building a team for the future and not short term success.

You must be naive then. Managers and clubs want short term success as well. Ole wont get 5 years lumbering around between CL and Europa league. Next time he is out of the CL places at the end of the season is when he will get the boot.

Can't remember a signing I've been less excited about. Including Ighalo.

I think we bought a GK during Jose's reign. The club made a big song and dance about it.
I think his surname was Grant. I have never seen this guy play for us.
For me, that was probably the most underwhelming signing in the last few years.

Ighalo was the next worst signing. Absolute panic buy that no MUFC fan could ever have predicted we'd buy.

Then there was Dalot. He'd played 6 Portuguese league games, 17 years old - so I knew he was a youth player who may or may not make it. Not excited.

Cavani comes in as the 4th least exciting signing.

It’s great when oppo fans can be more pragmatic than our own fans.

Attack is the best form of defence
And all great football teams are built from the back
Depends how poorly your defence is playing, the great Liverpool had to upgrade theirs before they could really challenge on a sustained basis.
I agree with this. Our goals conceded didn't actually reduce when we signed defenders but when we brought in Fernandes. The better the attack, the less time it will be in your half.

Attack first, defence second. Besides, I'd prefer to watch a team that scores loads of goals and leaks goals than one that does the opposite.

These stats are from 2017 but I think subsequent season follow the pattern too....

Of the 22 PL champions at that point 14 had had the best attack that season while 9 had the best defence. An average rank of 1.45 out of 20 teams for their goals scored, compared to an average rank of 2.41 for goals conceded.

And SAF in particular was a master at winning the league with a weaker defence. We had only the 7th best defence in 1996/1997, the fourth best defence in 1998/99, the sixth best in 1999/00 and fifth best in 2012/13. But in all those season we had the best attack.

In other words the old truism about defence winning titles is wrong. Both are important but attack is more so and having the best attack is the better predictor of winning the league.

It’s great when oppo fans can be more pragmatic than our own fans.

Oppo fans want us to fail.
In the run-up to sacking Moyes, oppo fans were all saying that we should keep Moyes around for as long as posible. "He needs more time".

Feck me, Pizarro was on £150k a week? Cool, I stand corrected.

I'm honestly not certain that Cavani will be seen as a pure bench player, like Ighalo was. I'm already reading what kind of a beast Cavani was and how he can lead the attack for the club.

Remember when literally everyone though we were getting Sanchez to play as a RW, alongside Martial/Rashford and Lukaku? What if Cavani benches someone and it again creates tension within the squad? I hope his potential role is explained to him in detail so he doesn't come with the expectations of being a starter.

If we're not getting Sancho we should use the money to buy a cannon and fecking stick Rojo in there.
Come on. Let's be fair to the players. It's not like they are running about kicking up a stink about the club. As long as they are our player and they give their best for us, even if it is not good enough for us, I'd at least afford them a bit of kindness and respect.

But for sure. We have too many players and we are staring at the prospect of letting players go on a free unless Ed/Matt do something about it.

I'm glad you're getting onboard instead of being a big moappet

There will be more than enough games for both Martial and Cavani to feature a lot. Especially given how tightly packed the schedule is this year.

When does Rojo do that? He doesn't fecking play anymore.

Yeah, both Martial and Cavani have to be satisfied with being rotated. Otherwise it becomes an internal problem for the club.

Good thing he will need time to get back in shape, so won't bench anyone for now. If he impresses and someone doesn't, then yeah, if deserved he will start. It isn't rocket science. Everyone will have enough games, i would be shocked if someone of the first 16 players will complain about lack of game time this season.
