Edinson Cavani - SIGNED for United

I'm honestly not certain that Cavani will be seen as a pure bench player, like Ighalo was. I'm already reading what kind of a beast Cavani was and how he can lead the attack for the club.

Remember when literally everyone though we were getting Sanchez to play as a RW, alongside Martial/Rashford and Lukaku? What if Cavani benches someone and it again creates tension within the squad? I hope his potential role is explained to him in detail so he doesn't come with the expectations of being a starter.
Buried somewhere in the Welcome Sanchez thread is a post in which I pointed out in his interview he quite deliberately said he could "play anywhere, behind the striker, on the left, through the middle".

No right wing. Nobody cared, we had signed a right winger.

That will likely appease most fans here, but I still think it would be unnecessarily disruptive. Sancho signing means Greenwood likely sits on the bench. Cavani coming in will only lessen Greenwood's playing time further.

SIgning Thiago Silva would have made more sense for us.
I think the aspect of our younger players and Tony/Marcus learning from a player like Cavani is invaluable.

City have two first team quality options for every forward position. It doesn't seem to do them much harm.

I'm getting bored with nothing happening... can we at least track his flight? :boring:

We can't afford wages for both Sancho AND Cavani.
It is either/or. Not both.
I'd love to be wrong, but I will be proved right in 36 hours.
Nobody on this forum actually knows that’s though. Regardless of Sancho we needs options up top and we can still land Sancho on deadline day, big transfers have gone through last minute in the past.

We always say this, but how often does this prove to be the case?

Do you think Rashford has become a considerably better player since being 'mentored' by Ibrahimovic?

I think it had an effect. The class of 92 talked about Cantona, Rooney talked about Larson. How big an effect is the question? I think it’s often overstated.

Whilst I take your point, that kind of influence is not quantifiable.

That whole saga broke our club, it broke us, the fans, and it put the final nail in Mourinho's coffin. The expectations were sky high, we were actually hoping to challenge for the league and it all came crashing down incredibly quick. :(

Will you be happy if we get Cavani and Dembele by tomorrow ?
No. Neither particularly wants to play for us (at least Dembele doesn't seem to want to), both have had their problems with injuries recently and have seldom played over the last year, both would be on very high wages.

They'd be typical Woodward signings, and I'd wager not the signings Ole would have wanted.

Having slept on the thought... I think he'll do really well this year and change a lot of opinions on him. He's been a great player his whole career and there has to still be space and time for the occasional older signing, and there are very clear benefits there. We have a very young team everywhere - an older head will do well to guide that a bit. We don't have a striker like him, so he'll be a very useful option rotating. Proven enough to be able to rotate in both our hard competitions with our 3 main attackers (and the other 3 are versatile enough to be able to play on the wings with him up top, whatever the combination). Thats the main thing we needed, just some depth so we don't injure our own players through pure negligence. Need to do the same for left back, then you can say we at least addressed the depth issues, even if its still a massive failure of a window. But there is benefit to older signings, but of course, massive gamble on fitness record. If hes fit then I think he'll only help.

yes

The way this thread has gone, there's probably somebody in here waiting at the end of Manchester Airport runway with a Stinger missile launcher.

Then you can't say for sure whether him signing will prove beneficial to our younger strikers.

I still think its a common footballing myth that younger players will automatically be better players training and playing in proximity to older stars.

I am looking forward to him playing. Let's just hope he stays injury free. Whatever little I have watched of him, he always came across as a fighter who gives his all on the field. We lack those kind in the team at the moment. Might also be a good influence in the locker room.
I don't understand the excessive negativity. It's not like we gave up on Sancho/Dembele to sign him. These are mutually exclusive decisions. As an independent decision, I would nuch rather have Cavani in the squad then not have him.

This has Falcao written all over it. It would be nice if he comes in and has the level that keeps Rashford and Martial away from the striker starting spot. That will need to really be at some level, but I will be surprised if this doesn't go the way of Falcao. Will be interesting to see though, a mate said "more CL capable bodies for CL this season" and it clicked as to what this signing means.

If he gets any kind of starter role right out the gate you've gotta be expecting another massive season derailing strop from Martial again. That would be a weird dynamic to introduce to the squad when we just saw two months of an acceptable platform of performances to build on for the next few years with him up front.

Like I said, this is a weird one apart form another CL body is a good thing.

And some are seemingly still scared by it.
I was one of those excited by the Sanchez signing hoping he could raise us a level, it clearly didn’t work but we can’t cling onto that and use it against signings forever.

I’m not excited By the cavani deal but I’m relatively happy with it and doesn’t seem massively high risk

I’m not saying they need to improve considerably to be effective just to pick up things from quality strikers will definitely not hurt.

They could all learn from his off the ball movement.

I don't enjoy the Falcao comparison. Correct me if I'm wrong but Falcao had a far worse injury than Cavani to come over, and Falcao was brought in as our number 9 whereas Cavani is brought to add depth and help us with a plan B.

Moreover Cavani is reported to come in on £175k or so a week according to Athletic whereas I think Falcao was on 200-250k? So is this comparison just based on age? Or what exactly.

If martial can’t handle being dropped because there’s a player here playing better than him, that’s on him and his attitude, no one else. We can’t not sign players incase our existing players sulk if they’re dropped for them

You can, it's qualitative. The concept of role models is well-established - Have you not picked up important learning points from observation or interaction with those more experienced or learned than you?

I think we all know that the moan-at-all-costs Cafe hipsters won't be happy with that scenario for multiple reasons, but it would be a more than decent scenario for us.

My one concern with this Cavani signing and also with Dembele is that we are not moving away from our strategy of buying players who really want to be here. I strongly agree with Oles holes instead of arseholes comment.

If we end up with both of those players on loan, and they have both convinced the club that they want to give 100%, then fantastic. Even getting 25 games each out of both of them is going to be a big help in our getting through this season, and we can look for more permanent solutions next summer.

I'd agree.

Falcao was brought as our No.9 to allow Rooney play 10 but Falcao just didn't work out for a number of reasons.

He was also coming back directly after a very bad knee injury coming into a league know for its high speed.
We essentially needed Falcao firing on all cylinders from day one but we no current injury issues for out forwards he be phased into fitness/league style.

I agree we need another striker, but brining in massive ego's to be an option off the bench is not going to turn out well.

As for breaking our wage structure its already a complete mess, even with Sanchez gone. Saying it didn't break the wage structure could make anyone from 100k to 300k.
I have no idea if he will be another massive ego. For sure, they would have made it clear what his role is in the team before they signed. Well we'll only find out later. For now, we can only hope for the best.

As for the wage structure, well if it was already broken before this, then it has nothing to do with Cavani, does it? I do agree there are concerns whether it is too bloated. I only hope we can keep control over it as we offload surplus players and get new long term signings.

People moaning that this deal should’ve been done earlier would be moaning that we’ve given up on Sancho too early. Cavani is a fine signing and a shrewd piece of business.

The reality is that as it stands Odion Ighalo would play a lot of games for us, because our first choice front three physically can't play them all in this tight a schedule. Which is a problem as Ighalo clearly isn't particularly trusted. And Ighalo leaves in January, so even then we would need to find a different replacement in that window instead.

In other words signing nobody isn't an option.

Would I prefer that wasn't the case? Sure. But it is. So if this is indeed a 1+1 deal then it's potentially a good move as it solves that one problem for a season at least. Cavani doesn't have to be a revelation to fit that job description.

Regardless, if the signing will be done, I hope its done soon so we can see which shirt number he's given. That might be a telling indication as to whether we're actually packing it for further transfers or not.
