Edinson Cavani - SIGNED for United

Another one trying to be pedantic. Some of you guys love to clutch at specific comments and take them too literally.

My point is noone would care if it ends up as a success or not. Right now, if we don't sign anyone else, people will have big expectations from Cavani. And I'm 99% certain he will not come anywhere near close to what those big expectations would be.
I’m not trying to be pedantic, I’ve quoted and replied to your posts directly about signing Cavani and you comparing it to Sanchez, nothing about the state of the club or other signings

and probably similar expectations to the igalho signing, to be used as cover. Only a lot more quality

At this point, I have no clue why we got rid of Sanchez if we end up getting Cavani. I think Sanchez would have been more useful and is younger as well.

We also would not have lost so much money, as we had to pay Sanchez to leave for FREE, whilst now we are also paying Cavani a ton of money and he will leave for FREE as well. What a shambles.

Honestly don't know what is going on anymore. Ighalo made sense but signing a 33 year old Cavani no other club deems worth the wages is kind of hard to fully understand. Just Ed behind this deal?

Well check the Donald Trump has coronavirus thread. Few people wish him dead. Once you open a can of worms..

I don’t want glazers dead. I don’t really know if I do if I’m honest.. Look, it’s an off the cuff remark that I don’t particularly find becoming but I’m not going to take it back either because thinking back on it.. feck those cnuts!

Edit: Also, nothing to do with Cavani as a signing. Think he’ll do well. He should have been signed weeks ago and we still need a rw.
That’s the thread I meant I didn’t agree with

also, I never picked you up on it, just replied in jest

Can't believe what I'm reading flicking through this thread. People suggesting that this signing is 'better than nothing' are just as much part of the problem as the fecking idiots at the top. How the mighty have fallen.

I don't understand all the anger towards this transfer.

We are getting a top player with at least 2 years of high level football left in him. A player whose scored 112 in 213 (Serie A) and 138 in 200 (Ligue 1). A player with lots of priceless experience that he can pass on to youngsters at the club. He's high profile so will bring in even more commercial revenue and will offer serious competition for Martials position which can only be a good thing.

And what is the transfer fee we have to pay for this privilege...............£0

It's a no brainer in my opinion and means we have more money to improve other areas of the squad in one of the hardest transfer windows in decades (Covid)
If he was 2 years younger, wasn't crocked, and wasn't coming off the back of 7 months out without serious training, maybe you would have a point...

There's a reason why he was a free agent, and being touted around Europe by his agent without a buyer until the last second by us.

Did Rooney's experience count for anything on the pitch for us in his last years? You have to look past the shiny name and look at the reality of what we're getting. He's going to take at least a month before we even first see him as a sub. On the pitch, I doubt we're going to be getting much.

Why did ighalo make sense but this doesn’t? Ighalo is shit ffs

Hes 33? And the agent fees are £10M.....

Agreed that his age isn't ideal but he's a top short term option and at 33 I still think he's got 2 years left in him. Suarez is 33 and just taken the striker position at Atletico. Lewandowski is 32 and just scored 50+ in a single season. I'd compare Messi and Ronaldo too because of their age but they're on another planet.

As for the £10m, some people are saying its less but even if it stays at that amount, that's £5m a year fee for a player who brings all those things I listed, that's great business in this market. For comparison, Higuain cost Juve £91m 2 years ago and they've just let him go on a free.

I just find it a bit odd when people give em the eyes whenever we’ve been clearly taking the piss. We’re a shambolic run football club and I’m not overstating that. We should have consolidated our third place finish. We should have capitalised on our finish to the season.

That Uruguan coach analysis is pretty damning. He's not played or trained in months, 33, don't see us getting 3/4s of the Cavani of 5 years ago.

I agree with the sentiment he's better than Ighalo... But damn, I was excited about the signing of VDB early on. A good depth signing. But just adding Cavani in this window will be pretty miserable and we need to get behind Ole, and put all of our anger towards the board... But I don't think the board will care much, they never have.. ugh!

Ah well least we got Sanchez replacement, no idea why we need him, is well past his prime and isn’t going to improve us.

Now we just need Telles to put the Ball on a plate for him and Sancho if we can pull it off.

Guys Cavani is our ST now so we need to get used to it and get on with it because if he gets us past PSG this month I can imagine the whole stance will change and he'll be described as a masterstroke.

I wasn't keen on this transfer but he's here so yeah... Time to support. Give the lad time before comparing him to Falcao.

It was a short term loan. Signing a 33 year old, who doesn't even fit our style of play, for high wages is the opposite of a rebuild it's going backwards.

I agree we don’t seem to be run well and it’s hard to see as a fan. I’m not against this free Cavani signing though

Here's a big fat £300k+ a week sticking plaster to hoodwink at least some of the dumber fans into thinking we're not sinking faster than the titanic.

Can't believe we started out in the position of "just finished third, make 3 or 4 astute signings to improve the first eleven and push for the top 2" ... to "finished third, ignore all the positions we desperately need to strengthen. sign a 33 year old galactico has-been in a last second desperation bid to claw onto the top four"

But yeah, he is three times the player Ighalo is. Woop de do.

I agree with you, my friend. It was a time to keep the positive vibes. One of the reasons I got excited finishing 3rd was adding Sancho and kicking on. This board has a pattern that's been reiterated here a lot. Top 4 = tight wallets; drop out - sack manager, new manager and spend cycle. Could have got Maquire 20 mil cheaper under Jose. Just shambolically run and have been since the Glazers and Ed. Ugh!

So can he play RW?

Genuinely beggars belief.

Just watch him score at start and lunatics will pop with lols at those who expressed their concerns/issues regarding this signing.

Ole:
“But, yes, we now have to be very thorough and very sure when we put big money down for players.

“They have to be right for the future, they have to be right for now, and they have to be right for the group that is already here. It's much more complex than just pointing a finger at a player and saying: 'He's got the quality.'

When you sign players you go into a thorough process to make sure the ones you bring in are right for the club. It's easy to pick out the best players in the world. Every club knows about them.

“The process of recruitment means it is vital to make sure that when you invest money it is well spent. I think the people we have involved to monitor and identify players are doing a good job.

“We've lost a few good players who have gone on to do well at other clubs – but we felt that we wanted to go in a different direction.

“When I came in, my view was that we had to give young players a chance, that we had to see if we could find something in our own ranks – and that has worked well.”

Took us 2x months to evaluate a free agent did it? :wenger: :(

“When people see Cavani on the team sheet, that’s gonna send some shivers down their spine.”

Think about the fear factor we're getting. Those crisp shirts are getting printed as we speak. We're back baby!

Or a free transfer for a back up and different style of play. For when we need that plan B that people slate Ole for not having.

how high are his wages then? And what are ighalos wages?

Rooney declined very quickly because he was genetically built like that. Some players stay athletic their whole lives (Ronaldo, Zlatan), Rooney was never like that. He peaked very early.

From what's been written in the press, I believe Cavani wasn't snapped up by any other top team because of his financial demands. Especially with this years market and everyone tightening their purse because of Covid. We were just in a better position to make the deal happen.

The problem is, we can't buy Sancho AND a top striker. You have to decide which you want more right now. Say we pay £80M for a young top striker now and wait next summer for Sancho. Whats to say other big clubs are not then in a position to compete for him?

I didn’t even want Sancho particularly. I just wanted good scouting and reinforcements. We’ve signed a guy who’s been let go and has been available for the past 7 months in reality.

You said "maybe Sanchez was a dick". Do you use cards instead of a crystal ball?
You’re saying it’s another Sanchez signing, how you can possibly know that I don’t know but if we’re doing that My cards say it’s another Ibra signing

If Cavani was worth the wages he's asking for + his agent fees, he would have been picked up already. There is a reason why he wasn't signed yet.

I wanted someone like Ziyech, would have made so much sense. We had to make 3 signings before the season started, yet again our whole season is compromised due to lack of planning and lack of adequate preparation.

Whats our style of play? I am curious how many people having actually seen Cavani play and just think he's some kind of target man...

No, personally I'm unhappy we're signing a 33 year old on a two year contract on £172k a week (basic) when that money should have been spent elsewhere. We're papering over cracks yet again like it's January, fecking why?

Lets put some context here . Martial is our main striker and rightly so. So essentially we are looking for a backup. Greenwood probably would take the right wing anyway as I don't think Sancho is coming and we are now coming to realization that we need a striker . If Sancho was here ,yes Mason can deputize (personally I don't think he is ready to lead the line yet).

Now whho is realistically available who can come in without a quality drop ?

Spurs just paid 35m for that Brazilian guy. Liverpool has been continuously spending on backup options (Origi, Shaqiri, Mino, Jota- thats 60m+)
Arsenal spent 100m on Laca and Auba.

This is a short term fix until we have Mason ready or Halaand (or any xyz). Its a one year deal with an option for second.

Its going to be okay !
