Edinson Cavani - SIGNED for United

He’s not expected to be our first choice striker starting game after game straight away is he? I’m sure he can come on for 10-20 mins and ease his way in, we’ve still got the super loan united fan igahlo too! We needed another striker, here’s another striker for free, still not good enough though
I would be happy if he was somewhat fit. Heck even if he was coming off a few months out I would still be fine with it, because we need all the bodies we can get. But this is looking worse than when Falcao joined. End of career? Injury riddled? Over 6 months out of competitive training too? The danger signals are there.

Ease him in? Good luck with that. I bet we don't see him even as a sub until November.

We need fit strikers right now. What good does being fit by Christmas do for us really? He might as well be a January signing.

Where is the link with Joshua King?

Previously you say you can accept this as for January when Iglaho left, right? We have quite some time to get another forward if that's the plan.

This type of transfer, where player ain't getting conditioning for months, is better for the beginning of the window. Had it come down to this, then rather not doing it.

Not our target, but it's not like there is lack of option. Dzeko, Milik are all available to move, beside all the forwards that already moved.

He isn't half the player Cavani is and would cost minimum 20m and a longer contract.
Also has very little experience of European competition let alone the UCL

No we don't Jan is in 3 months, the Jan market isn't going to be easy (hence we ended up with Ighalo last time) and we are likely targetting someone like Halaand next summer

Well yeah but we were supposed to be signing a proper right winger this summer. Greenwood is a centre forward. That's where the focus should be not plan b strikers. But give the guy a chance I suppose.
Why is he a centre forward?
All the games I have seen he does not play straight down the middle and Ole has stated he is not good enough in the air to be a centre forward.

I never lose sleep with the club spending extra on a player compared to not spending money at all.

Cavani even in his 40's is better than Ighalo. Ighalo has been given chances to show his worth in matches & not shown much. That improvement no matter how little is important.

think he'll get us 15+ goals with at least one hattrick if he starts 25+ games. I'm being positive about the "if" though.

No it isn't, lets pretend we didn't attempt to sign him before we got Ighalo too, he wasn't the first choice is not a definition of panic, its the definition of not being the first choice.
Yes, it is, you proved it with your own words. We couldn't get our first choice options, we waited and tried to play smart all transfer windows and now that we have 2 days left only, the club is panicking and buying whoever is actually available.

This is a textbook panic buy, a trademark Woodward deal, desperately trying to salvage another failed season.

Who were?
Yes the same player we almost signed last Jan, right....
We also signed him at the same time as the Pallestri kid who weve been linked with for months.
Of course though just believe the media narrative

More than likely we waited to see if other options would come available but always knew Cavani was an option (since we have been linked since Jan)

Was signing Sanchez better than signing noone? People back then were saying it's even better, because we were getting rid of a useless player in Mkhitaryan.
 The whole Sanchez saga has killed any chance of united ever signing someone over the age of 20 with success again.

He is much better than Martial will ever be and I am a fan of Martial but its what it is, theres levels to this whole thing.

It’s nothing to do with Cavani..

This Cavani is worse right now, and has been for this past year.

All the people talking about Cavani being good is based on distant past exploit; and hope for the future/potential despite he is supposed to be short term fix signing. Think about it the paradox in that.

Don't agree with the signing at all but he's gonna look amazing in the kit. Cool looking bastard.

Feck sake, why couldn't this be 5-6 years ago?! One of my favourite non-United players.

No he hasn't but anyway we agree to disagree no need to carry on the conversation
No its based on the fact even with limited minutes last season he was still very good, just a different type of player.

Show me a top club which regularly buys over-the-hill players? We are the only constant losers who go after the overused players of other top clubs.

It's an absolute embarrassment. What is even the goal for this season, what are the expectations? Barely getting into top 4 again? Hoping on a miracle domestic cup run? We sure as hell ain't competing in the CL against the likes of PSG, Bayern Munich or Liverpool.

Yes, four weeks away, like what was first stated that you disagreed with.

the only problem I have with this signing is that we kept ighalo

He is certainly better than signing no one though, and I highly doubt it will actually take till Christmas for him to get fit. He probably could start coming off the bench by the end of the month which is when we will first need him.
Why do you highly doubt it? He's 33 years old, crocked and hasn't played for 7 months or trained seriously since then. We're looking at a long time before we see him, longer than it took Ighalo at least and can hardly expect to rely on him much anyway, seeing as he only played 1k mins last season.

Well look at Bayern getting Perisic. He helped them so much in winning the CL. Yet we probably would have looked at a deal like that like something we are just too good for.
Older players can work out

Cavani is still much better than Martial and he probably always will be. just look at Martial in our first few games this year, completely disappears

Its not that Im in favor of this signing btw. Would have prefered Telles, Dembele and Sancho but Cavani is much better than Martial.

They are not comparable at all. One is a free transfer of a player on a 2 year contract for half the wages of Sanchez. The other was essentially a 30-40 million pound transfer and long term contract that broke our wage structure. The risk is so much lower for this transfer so I don't really see the point of bringing it up. You should be comparing him to the potential signing we could make for about 15 million in transfer fees and 5 million in wages. Don't think there are that many strikers out there of decent quality for that price.

When Choupo-Moting got minutes when both were available (both running out of contract), then you would think Choupo Moting was world beater if you think Cavani was very good last season.

Agree to disagree then.

We didn’t buy Cavani.

I just think it’s funny as soon as we’re linked with someone who isn’t a massive youth prodigy the Sanchez comparisons come out

Bayern are destroying the Bundesliga every season and have a very strong, competitive squad, they get the signings they need before doing deals like Perisic.

Cavani is not miles better than Martial, you are chatting absolute bollocks. The guy is done at the top level, when are we going to fecking learn with these players?

he wont he'll be injured 80% of the season just expensive company for jones in the treatment room. Sanchez mk2
Nobody can predict the future. However, the big difference, huge difference between Sanchez and Cavani signings is that Jose brought Sanchez in as a starter, we are clearly recruiting Cavani as an experienced backup, to add depth to our thin and young squad and provide a mentor to our very talented but inexperienced front line. It is a very smart play, if it works.

how about the falcao comparsion? Or the bastian comparison?

Who were those players? I can only remember Schweinsteiger and Falcao (on loan) who were definite bad decisions at the time of signing. Based on what you're saying there must be many more names.

Sanchez, Schweinsteiger, Falcao. It seems every couple of years we do one of those ridiculous signings that only our club would make. No wonder other clubs and agents always take the piss and demand more money from us, they know that the people in charge are incompetent morons.

I still cant believe we would do this. I thought a single player transfer window was mocking the fans who support the team through thick and thin. So Woodward takes it a step further and gives a tight slap on our faces as well.
What a farce.

I do agree we should have done signings way before we sign Cavani. There were more immediate needs and Mason can fill in at that backup striker spot too.
I am not super psyched about Cavani but again is he better than Martial? Yes. 100 %.
He is/was elite. He has reached the level that Martial never has. Heck bring back 38 yr old Zlatan, still better than Martial too.
Martial is too inconsistent while true elite players stay elite for a long time. Martial just isnt that level. Cavani is. So is Zlatan.

This opinion is so wrong that it makes Trump look right.

Now you’ve added another two players, ok. You make out like we make 3 of these signings a year.
And the initial post I quoted was laughing at the Sanchez comparison, they’re nothing alike

apples and oranges. Perisic was a depth player for them, but they were already a stacked team. We have holes in our squad and desperately needed to strengthen this summer. Reactions to Cavani would have been different if we had also brought in other players that we need, but we haven't. That's the problem, not the Cavani thing in isolation.

Cavani is still much better than Martial
utterly ridiculous take, sorry. I swear, some of our fans just like to piss on our players for fun ... Martial scored 17 PL goals last season. People need to stop thinking of prime Cavani, we're simply not getting this version. We're getting the version that is 33 years old, has been plagued by injuries, scored 4 goals in Ligue 1 last season and hasn't played a single game since March.

Who were those players? I can only remember Schweinsteiger and Falcao (on loan) who were definite bad decisions at the time of signing. Based on what you're saying there must be many more names.
That's not enough for you? We've also been linked to Bale for god knows how many years, even now when he is clearly way past his peak.

Why do you highly doubt it? He's 33 years old, crocked and hasn't played for 7 months or trained seriously since then. We're looking at a long time before we see him, longer than it took Ighalo at least and can hardly expect to rely on him much anyway, seeing as he only played 1k mins last season.
It took Ighalo about 3 weeks to start playing and he also had to quarantine for part of that time. Yes it is going to take some time, but he will at least be an option off of the bench within a month most likely. I don't see why this is such a travesty either. Spurs have the same situation with Bale. He's far better than nothing, and the upside is that we are getting a player that can score goals in a way that no other player in our squad can consistently offer.
