Edinson Cavani - SIGNED for United

Teddy Sheringham was 33 when he came in as our 4th choice striker. Did he make an impact? Was he a success? Absolutely. He scored in the CL and FA cup final. One of the reasons why we were able to achieve the treble was because we had 4 decent quality strikers. Cavani on a free is an upgrade to what we currently have. He also has different elements to his game, similar to Sheringham he has great vision and makes loads of assists.

feck United. We’re done as a football club.

This is worse than Valencia, Owen, Obertan.

Anyone that is unopposed to Glazers may as well be supportive of them. And if you are, I wish you die slow.

Doesn't make much sense to me except as a plan b. We have martial as first choice and Greenwood as second choice striker. When will he play? Or are we abandoning the way we've played since ole came? Nobody in this United team can cross so there will be no service to a striker like Cavani. Really strange and smacks of panic signing.
No, Greenwood isn't our second choice striker if he's our starting right winger!

No because Im pretty sure we aint done

Whats rubbish are other things but signing Cavani isnt one of them

I’ll check in with you on Tuesday but recent transfer windows experience tells me we sign feck all else of any significance.

Club signs backup striker and thats ruining the club... right
A backup striker who was available the entire window - who could have been training and playing games with us if the club weren't an utter shambles

Like Zlatan, Sheringham was always slow so aging mattered less. It was never a part of his game.

Well yeah but we were supposed to be signing a proper right winger this summer. Greenwood is a centre forward. That's where the focus should be not plan b strikers. But give the guy a chance I suppose.

I didn't engage with this when it was first doing the rounds because it looked like a desperate signing of a bloke who doesn't really want to be here. Now it looks to be happening I'm hoping for the best and trying to see the positives and ignore the lurking feeling we're being done again by agents.

Yes and hes replacing Ighalo not Martial so its not a big deal. He’ll be fit again by Jan

The schedule is more congested this year. What if our main guy needs rest, while Ighalo is still this non existent, offering nothing, and result suffers in the meanwhile. Then what if Cavani turning out shit. We need to give him time right? So there is the risk of signing no forward in January.

You need to be able to assess short term player ASAP. It's about planning here.

Apparently because he may take a few weeks to get back to fitness that means Ole is mad for okaying it and the board don’t know what they’re doing. All before a ball has even been kicked
It's going to be a bit longer than a few weeks. His last match was 7 months ago. His national coach has said he hasn't been training properly for many many months. He's already injury riddled & at the end of his career. It took Ighalo a month after not playing for 2 months, and he was 2 years younger and much fitter.

Cavani might not be up to speed until Christmas maybe. Would you still hold the same opinion then?

Get some sleep

Why are people citing Teddy Sheringham? Like it’s nowhere near same situations. Holy feck, I’d I love Teddy right now.. genuinely.

He hasn't played a match since 11th March. 7 months. When Ighalo joined us, he hadn't played for 2 months & it took him a month to get his first start. That's with Ighalo being injury free beforehand. How long is it going to take Cavani with his injury troubles? You're not concerned by those quotes?
What is so concerning? It's not like we are depending on him as a starter. Ideally he'd be fit sooner rather than later but really we need him to be fit and ready by Christmas when Ighalo will be about to leave. Its not like this is some super risky signing either as its a free transfer minus the agent fee. Best case scenario is we get a forward who offers something we don't currently have (an aerial threat in the box) who can start the occasional game and sub on when we need a goal. Worst case scenario he is a complete flop and we can probably loan him out next year on subsidized wages and it's not the end of the world.

Right now, our in game substitutions are to bring on Ighalo or one of Greenwood/James/Mata, and none of those players are really much different than the players they replace in the front three. We can't rely on Martial and Greenwood as our main striking options in an already condensed season. I'd rather us sign a stop gap player now and wait for Greenwood to develop into a true number 9 than spend 40-50 million on some half decent forward we don't really want who will be on the books for 5 years.

I’m out of popcorn after the last 3 hours of posts in this thread .

Calm before the storm though until Monday at lunchtime when Romano says Sancho deal is dead and no further signings.

What makes you think Greenwood is second choice striker ? He plays on the right as he is not ready to lead the Line. He will get bullied from there. He is at his best when facing the goal. Ole seems to agree...

Even if we buy Sancho (very unlikely) 5 players capable of playing in the front three is not too much, even then we will still miss one...

And if Greenwood play central who plays on the right ?

He’s not expected to be our first choice striker starting game after game straight away is he? I’m sure he can come on for 10-20 mins and ease his way in, we’ve still got the super loan united fan igahlo too! We needed another striker, here’s another striker for free, still not good enough though

You seem a nice chap.

Guess we should have not signed a striker instead then. Not like one of our main targets is available next summer for a known fee

The club aren't going to let 200k+/week of players be unregistered and they're certainly not going to want to pay off the contracts.
We'll clearly clear them out someway. Lots can be done on deadline day. Cannot let them being here hamper improving the squad. It has with the CB position but can't let it affect elsewhere.

The simple fact is this becomes a whole lot more palatable if Sancho is on his way to us as well.
Was thinking this myself. I don't mind the Cavani signing at all... In isolation. Looking at it though it seems like a panic signing else why leave it so late for a freebie? That being said, if we do get Sancho, what more could you have asked for to reinforce our front line? A superstar player and an old head to provide some experience.

To be honest, this whole time I thought this was that United linked with every cat and his dog kind of story. To actually see that we are taking him, I would never have guessed!! Not sure what to make of it!
Definitely feels outside of our transfer "plan" and smacks of panic. But if he can do a Zlatan job, then lets see. Won't criticize until/if he flops (Hopefully criticism won't be needed)

Who clearly wasnt the first choice
Yes, the absoulute definition of a panic buy. That's the point people are making. We couldn't get our preferred targets and ended up with this guy. Everything about him is terrible and then adding to that, he hasn't even played football in almost half year.

I look forward to finally seeing some headed goals, though instead of it being passed to him, it would be in anticipation of some of Rashford's shots..

Only that's he's the most natural finisher at the club so makes sense to have him in front of goal eventually so the centre forward role seems to make sense to me for him. He could play across the front 3 but I think he will end up.in the centre.
