Duncan Castles : Jose Mourinho on collision course with Ed Woodward over Manchester United transfers

If, as I've been told. Jose has given Ed a 31 August deadline, it's not inconceivable that he sees this as the ideal time to squeeze in a few weeks holiday taking in the Lions tour. Then onto His own US tour, leaving himself the whole of August to complete Jose's list, by which time the market should have opened up a bit.

Somehow I doubt anybody has told you anything?

If the manager really has tasked him with getting all the signings in before training resumes and this is the final week before training resumes and the transfers aren't resolved then yes it's fairly poor practice.

He's the CEO of an extremely important organisation and these dealings are crucial to our performance/profit. I know it's 2017 and we can work remotely but he needs to be available for a face to face negotiation in Spain (or similar) at short notice if required.

That said - that's all assuming all the transfer machinations are Woodward's direct responsibility, it may be that they are all done by a huge team and he has no input whatsoever other than okaying fees. In which case this is more an issue of perception, ie. it doesn't look great symbolically to the fans that our figurehead is larking about on the other side of the world when we need reinforcements.

I do get that.

But people are just jumping to conclusions that he is on a jolly - we have no idea why he was there, who is was with etc. He may have been a guest of Mendes, Raiola, who knows.

The Guardian sums things up:
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is frustrated by the club's failure to add to £31m defender Victor Lindelof so far this summer and his staff were surprised at chief executive Ed Woodward flying to New Zealand to watch the British and Irish Lions' first Test last month.

It's impressively stupid logic to believe that Woodward not being sat in his office, by the dial-up telephone, dictates that United's entire operation comes to a standstill.

Some of you lot are probably irritated at the thought of him having a lie-in on a Saturday.

Whether the entire operation comes to a standstill or not you still need your main man at the negotiating table. Otherwise what impression would that give to any potential signing when our CEO thinks it's more important to piss off to NZ to watch the Lions, than it is to represent the club's interests at the negotiating table?

No wonder Mourinho is getting frustrated, his priority is actually preparing our team for next season, whilst Ed's priority is attending the Lions tour. Hardly surprising then if Mourinho has used the media to let everyone know who is to blame if pre season preparations are affected, and by placing widespread focus on Ed and his activities the additional attention will surely have the desired effect and speed Ed up a bit.

I find it very hard to believe Jose did not know where Ed was. I'm almost sure both would have been keeping in touch and know each other's movements. You're telling me they wouldn't have been discussing on going transfers, especially the Morata situation? Doesn't make sense to me.
So either the press are lying bastards and trying to create a problem, or Jose is making unnecessary trouble.

or woodward is back to his old ways of not.. you know working for his salary

The Griezmann transfer issue hasn't really helped us, when we turned our attention to Morata, Ronaldo's issue came up and Real put everything on hold until they sort it out.
Cannot really blame Woodward as I am sure he is trying the best he can to get the targets Jose wants. I just don't like the fact that we have been airing all internal issues to the media, from the Martial/Shaw/Smalling issues to the transfer part.
Mourihno should really keep his mouth shut and solve things behind closed doors, we are becoming a laughing stock on the market and everybody is enjoying it.

So Ed is not allowed free time?
Mourinho should be careful.

A laughing stock on the market?

Well I refuse to believe Woodward would just walk out midway through the transfer window if we are really struggling like the press are trying to make out.

We never really know what's happening, for all we know we could have 4 players lined up just waiting to return from holiday?

We have got 4 players lined up, just waiting for Ed to return from holiday?

You refuse to believe Woodward would walk out if we are struggling? He has been on the Lions tour! That is why we are struggling to complete transfers, because the man we have tasked to negotiate and finalize these deals is in NZ watching the fecking Lions! Suddenly becomes much easier to appreciate why Jose is getting so frustrated.

Youve made some really good points in this thread, especially the post from the early hours of this morning. But you are making a lot of baseless assumptions here.

Yeah I don't get why him being in NZ is such an issue, it's the 21st century for ffs, there are plenty of jobs where you can work remotely.

For all we know Woody might have been there with agents, or corporate hospitality for clients.

Does it really matter.

Seems to matter to Mourinho. Jose's top priority is sorting the team out for next year, Ed's is watching the Lions in NZ. I can't believe jose is getting stick for this. He gets his list in early, and then watches his CEO spend the next fortnight or so watching the Lions, and people wonder why he is getting frustrated! comedy gold!

When has Woodward not 'worked' for his salary? He has a lot of responsibilities, not just baby sitting Mourinho and giving in to him when he throws a tantrum.

I just read it again haha works well!

Well judging by the players we got since he took charge, he hasn't been so bad, we basically got most of the players managers required. I wouldn't really think Woodward is being lazy/not doing his job but so far, bar the Lindelof deal, it's either fake media news linking us to different players here and there or players expressing their interest in joining us, no paper has reported that we had any bid turned down for example.

I honestly think Mourinho is lost on the striker's part.

I think you'll find Jose getting 'stick' because of the public nature of his gripes. I'm still not totally convinced that the press is not causing trouble and it has nothing to do with Jose's mouth running off, but if he is, this is not the way to go about things. By all means have a go at Woodward if he's not doing what he should - but it should not be done through the press. We've never operated like that and he needs to learn this is not on. Go and quarrel with Ed in private.

To be fair, Mourinho is under a lot of pressure this coming season to really challenge for the title and do well in the CL. The pressure is from us the fans, the board, owners, Ed and all the business related contracts United have. I think therefore, when looking at the quality of RM, Barcelona and seeing how many points behind we were from the top sides in the PL, it's fair that he feels worried about the lack of supposed progress in the recruitment of some of the players he wanted (having given options for each of them). He's the one under the most pressure next season that is without question.

Having said that.....if it is indeed true he used Castles to vent his frustration, then that was a wrong decision. He's a big enough man and personality to pick up the phone to Ed and the Glaziers...that is for sure!

Precisely.
He always says only 'men' play football - well I assume he sees himself as that 'manly' tough type of a manager. Therefore, I expect him to deal with things like a man - face to face, instead of moaning to his favourite hack - that's not manly in my eyes - that's cowardly.

So Ed is not allowed free time?
Mourinho should be careful.
It's the most crucial time of the season for Ed. He should go on holiday once the work is done. You wouldn't be pleased if Mourinho disappeared to Australia for 2 weeks in January to watch the tennis.

Fortnight?!

Youve made some really good points in this thread, especially the post from the early hours of this morning. But you are making a lot of baseless assumptions here.

why? We have had lots of baseless speculation about why Jose has decided to use the media to put pressure on ED. I have spent half the night contesting most of it, which has led to every possible criticism of jose, from his demands being unreasonable, his targets unobtainable, his short term ism and unwillingness to consider more achievable targets. Lots of other bollocks that i refuted as nothing more than the pointless debate of non issues borne from a lack of facts within the media.

Then we find out that our CEO has been in NZ for 2 weeks watching the Lions, and Jose clearly feels this is affecting our ability to close the deals, so he decided to use the media to speed things up. I don't think that is baseless assumptions, that is a very likely scenario in my view based upon Ed's recent activities. Is it speculative, yes of course, we don't know anything for certain. But that certainly makes far more sense than most of the other bollocks people have been spouting.

We will soon see, he is allegedly flying back for 'urgent transfer business' according to another poster. If he comes back and the deals are tied up swiftly, -Morata in particular- then we have to conclude Ed's presence was actually required to complete this deal, and therefore had he been present earlier, the deal could have been completed earlier. I would bet that is how mourinho will view it, and more than likely why he has deemed it necessary and appropriate to use public attention to force ED to get a move on.

Since I asked whether Jose would walk if this transfer window didn't go well, all the press have been reporting that Jose is frustrated with Woodward.

A case of journos reading the caf or were my concerns legitimate? Like i said at the time, Jose must know this squad is going nowhere and all he'll do by staying is ruin his reputation. Hopefully it doesn't come to this, which i don't think it will.

Jose beingfrustrated at the lack of business so far does not mean he's unhappy at Ed. I am sure they update each other on a daily basis. I read it as Jose is pissed that everything takes so long to be done, which is not Ed's fault

I wonder if Jose knew of Woodwards holiday plans when he said the summer is Woodwards time to work and that he can go on holiday after August.

I think you may be right:lol:

We know they lurk here after all.

That's a load of shit...

If Jose was 100% on the ball, then he'd not be on holiday or back in Portugal wherever he is...he'd be sat in Carrington, working on things for next season...everybody is entitled to a holiday...

So what if Ed Woodward was in NZ watching the Rugby, it's not like you don't have a portable computer in your pocket, that allows you to work whilst away from your desk...if only they had phones which you could actually take with you when you visited a new country...

Not a rugby fan, but you are right it's probably been closer to a month thinking about it. i find it hard to fathom how Ed can justify this decision so close to the start of the tour.

He was there for 1st test, has there been any evidence for the 2nd?

I will agree if he is there for the whole tour fair enough - all I have read was the 1st test, which personally I can live with.

Are you saying that because everyone else is spouting baseless speculation, why shouldnt you? If so fair enough, I certainly agree a lot of people are talking a lot of bollocks about Mourinho as well.

Fact remains though, the idea that the reason we havent done the deal yet is that Woodward is in NZ is highly speculative. Id go further than that actually and say its bollocks, pure and simple.

I agree with that.

IMO the papers are just latching onto the fact Woodward is in NZ and are using that for clicks.

Jose can hardly be angry at Ed when Inter and Madrid are being knobs? I am sure he will patient as long as he gets his man.

I wouldn’t blame JM being pissed if Ed was off in NZ

But I really wish he would feckign stop leaking to the press.
