Downing to Liverpool?

Henderson, Adam, Downing, Carroll.. that's 80M for England B.
 
He is looking to recruit a lot of English players after Rafa bought in all those Spanish players and God knows who Woy bought in.
 
Whilst £20mil is absurd for Downing I don't doubt he'll be a good signing for them. They've been crying out for a bit of quality in wide areas for years.
 
They always complain about having spent less or whatever, when they blow all this cash on average/decent players.

THey'll have the but we're decimated by woy and we need to spend to catch up, while we're having the best teams and shouldn't need to buy so much,

Just reading this now. Allforone stuff is feckin hilarious.

As for Pool splashing all this cash. Dunno why we are laughing. Yes they are over paying. But what do we care? Why would their fans care? If the owners have the cash it matters not.

One thing that is clear. Their squad will be a big improvement. And getting young English players in too is never a bad thing.

Downing is a good winger. The type Liverpool have needed for many years. Young IMO is a better all round player. But end product – there aint much of a difference between the 2. And we paid roughly the same amount.

A lot could well be eating their words. If this team clicks they could well challenge for the top 4 this season
 
Young is a better player than Downing - not by an absolute country mile, but the difference is noticeable.

I hope this post won't be edited at a later date.
 
Sky Sports news as said that they've taken their spending to £100m in 6 months! That's a lot of dosh.

Funny thing is £50m for Torres was an insane amount of money, particularly given his form for the past twelve months, but the way they used it it seems like it was a bargain for Chelsea and not so much from Liverpool's point of view. £107m spent since and their team barely looks better.

They are going all in when it comes to getting a top 4 position next season. Could be ugly if they fail though.

The team is infinitely better than it was last season. The prices are extortionate, indeed, but the team has been improved. Downing, Carroll, and Suarez is a front three that I can see actually complementing each other really well - one player who stays wide, one who cuts in, and one who is direct. It's not a perfect team in other positions by any means, but in fairness, it's going to be a tough side to beat away at Anfield especially.

Agree with this.

We can all talk about how much they've spent but when you simply look at the players brought in and not the nonsense surrounding it they've improved.

Although I'm struggling to figure out exacty how they'll line up.
 
Now this deal is signed Liverpool need to focus on improving their defence as is weak at the moment.

Over priced but Downing will be a good player for them who will benefit Carroll with his deliveries into the box.
 
They are building a solid, good squad with an English core. Whether these players will make them a top 3 side remains to be seen though
 
Well I am sure they would be more than happy with 4th

If I was a betting man I would be putting cash on Arsenal to finish outside the top 4 next season

Is it? Henderson and Adam are supposed to replace Meireles who will probably be departing, and I think he's superior to both of then. Torres is far, far better than Carroll and Suarez, although now they are able to play 4-4-2. Downing will be an improvement on.. well, on no one really as they haven't had a proper winger for ages, but he's still a Villa/Tottenham quality player in my eyes, he wouldn't play at any top 4 side. It's better but only marginally, and for a £55m net outlay I would be disappointed. Funny thing is that if you stuck a proper winger into their last season's side, and bought a striker to compliment/back up Torres, you would be looking at a superior side for less money.
 
I wouldn't be worried but on top of all that solid but unspectacular English talent they've got a gem in Suarez who looks the business.

And he was decent value at £22m. Their best buy yet, although looking at how they operate he will probably share Meireles fate and leave for Italy or Spain for less money than he was signed for, and I base this on absolutely nothing.

He looks like he's taken to the premiership like Torres has. I think he'll do brilliantly and if he goes he'll go for an even bigger amount.
 
Downing is a pretty good player, under-rated on here, and will definitely improve Liverpool's first XI and squad depth.

Whilst 20m is over-the-odds, it's certainly much better value for money than the deals for Henderson and Carroll.
 
Good player Downing. Never worth 20m though.

Must admit I am impressed with their spending so far. All good players, but nothing much to worry about.

I don't think they have the quality to do anything other than challenge for fourth place.

Plus in two years time Carragher and Gerrard will be totally past it and deeper into their decline, plus Suarez will leave for a team who challenge for titles.

I'd rate Downing around the 16m mark. Imo he and Young both are at a similar level to Valencia when he joined the mancs.

Think he is going to surprise a few people with how good he actually is when people start watching him more and being in a better team. He has come a long way in the past couple of years.

I also think he'll have a better season than Young. Not necessarily because he is a better player, but I imagine Young will be rotated more and used to plug holes in different areas. Downing will go straight into the team and fill a role he is tailormade for in a team that is crying out for for what provides.

Oh and Valencia was 23 when he joined Utd, nearly 26 now, same age as Downing. I think we all know who the better player is.

More or less. So do many Villa fans. I would have been equally happy with either before their transfer sagas started.

Valencia is the better player as it stands but he made a step up once he joined a better club and started playing with better players. I expect both Young and Downing to do the same.

Each team is biased but Young offers a lot more in terms of versatility and set pieces, and he's a better crosser. he'd have been a better buy for you than Downing.

Valencia is a better player period. Not trying to be biased. Young isn't as good as him either.

Both are versatile players. Downing is as comfortable on the right as he is on the left these days. And his crossing completion rate in the league this past season is the highest of anyone in the past three years.

Young is better through the centre and a better passer.
 
Liverpool sign a run-of-the-mill England B player for twenty million pounds.

Imagine Roy was still in charge - they'd be having mental breakdowns crying into their Mata bedsheets.

Instead now, it's all about cross completion stats and percentage of times he didn't fall over when taking a free kick.

No longer can we judge the player by watching him play for Aston Villa and England, it's all about the amount of times Heskey or Carew managed to get their bunce onto his crosses.

I think the final fee will be closer to £16.5 but of course the £20m spouted by Sky will stick. Even using a compromise figure of £18m it's not a bad deal when compared to what you paid for Young as he only had one year left on his contract. I'd have been happy with either Young or Downing. The two left footers will certainly give us a bit of balance.

As far as I was aware Villa fans were more upset at the prospect of losing Downing than Young. The proof will be in the pudding.

Still need a big feck off CB though.

This seems to be one of the major justifications I'm hearing from Liverpool fans about why Downing is a good signing i.e. that Villa fans would miss him more than Young.

It's become fact that Downing is better based on this.

The Liverpool Way. Add 5 Million quid to every United transfer sum, subtract 5 Million quid from every Liverpool deal. Then celebrate how Kenny did good business while United overpaid once again.

Wasn't really a justification, more a comment. I would imagine them choosing Downing ahead of Young for player of the year gives a good indication that they rated him pretty highly.

Not that I give a feck as it's what he does in a Red shirt that's important.
