Yes, definately a gamble. I agree, his level of ability is outstanding, but his level or performance has been hit n miss. Still think he would be a better fit and certainly more exciting signing than most of the other names we have been linked with attacking wise. Not sure I can see Mourinho wanting him though personally
You can't be comparing Obertan to Douglas Costa. That is just bizarre.
Yeah, I'd be surprised if we can find a winger this summer who would score more goals than Martial out wide, unless Bale wants to leave Madrid, which it seems he does not. Perisic seems like he can be counted on for 10-12 goals or so from the wing in about 40 matches, looking at his last 3-4 seasons (injury seems an outlier) and I'm sure Martial would get that if given 40 games out left. His defending and crossing would be weaker, but no less goals.
Don't know if this comparison is right or not but can we compare him to Nani ?
Yep. Is capable of the incredible, but will divide opinion because he is also capable of looking like a pub footballer.
That's what I just thought when I re-read my first post. Nani has been doing many magical tricks with us but his inconsistency was an issue for some fans.

Costa would open up so much space for the rest of the squad it wouldn't matter if his goal tally was relatively low. We need a winger with pace who can beat his man off the dribble and Costa fits the bill exactly

He was in such a great form for Guardiola, I remember he was terrifying Bellerin two seasons ago in Champions League. Not sure why he had such a big dip of form last season.

Dougie can play RW as well, right?
I like him more from the right tbh, can cut in side or whip in a cross.
But imagine this, if we decide to play 4-4-2 with Rashford and Martial upfront, Dougie would be great fit for LW.
Tho If we buy him now I reckon he'll play RW, he used to play it under Guardiola and back in Shakhtar.
I'm eagerly waiting (hoping?) for the links to him. Don't think we've had a player of his ilk since Nani. He'd suit us to a tee, his attack first, think later mentality and his long range shooting would be what we need to break down teams in those frustrating matches we dominated yet drew. His speed and dribbling would be ideal when we are sitting deep and looking to counter, too.
I can see Man City and Pep swooping in for him to replace the Jesus Navas role.

Played a lot there for Shaktar. But he's been more LW for Bayern from what I've seen. Either way I think he would be perfect.
City have played Navas as a wingback. They are looking for a proper LB to fill that position. They're not going to buy Costa and play him as a fullback considering his decision making is one of the weakest areas of his game.
Pep has done stranger things.
Surely if he is any good, he will be going to City. Pep has worked with him. In their last season together, Costa had a fine season.

Problem is, with City's attacking talent, he may see it as moving from one bench to another. Does he want to compete with Sane, D Silva, B Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling for starting roles? At Utd he'd probably be the best winger in the team.
True. But I wonder if it would be more of the case of replacing Sterling by shipping him out. But I guess the downside of that for them is, losing an English quota player.
Was referring the Navas role, as in utilising him as an impact player rather than being a starter every game.
Hence why I said Sterling. They have Sane on the left and Bernardo Silva on the right, that leaves Sterling on the bench.

In the nt he's bench because he plays in the same position as Neymar or Coutinho.
But when he was starter in 2015, and the team was really struggling in that time, he showed a lot of mental strenght in tough games against Uruguay, and against Argentina away, etc.
This is why when i read some Bayern fans talking about things like behaviour and commitment i thought something sounds wrong..maybe he just know that he's not good enough to bench Ribery or Robben(well, to give up its a weakness tbh).
I have no opinion formed on Douglas Costa because i only saw him three times for Bayern and four times for the NT, but he's good to watch in his best version, because the majority of players are fecking boring these days.
Has anyone watched him consistently for the last 3-4 years? He was fantastic when he moved to Bayern but some of their fans dont seem to rate him based on what happened after. Is he a one trick poney who keeps using his burst of pace to beat a man and get in a cross or is he capable of a lot more?

Bayern fans got used to season after season of having the best wing play in the world with Robben and Ribery. Costa was a decline in comparison. Lingard made 42 appearances for us last year, Costa will seem like we signed Messi at his peak.

I dont want any signing to merely be great with respect to average players like Lingard. You're right about differing standards, but if we're spending 150 million every summer we better start putting the bar Bayern-high, and at least look to get players of that talent even if not accomplishments/current level.
Well sure, but we're not very good in the transfer market. Ideally we'd sign a bunch of Bailly and Pogba types in their early 20s who could form the core of the next great United team, and we'd have bought Ousmane Dembele last summer and wouldn't need a winger.
If we're choosing between guys like Costa and Perisic it's because Mourinho wants us to be better immediately.
That's what we've hired this manager to provide. Seriously, we spend 150 million in 2/3 of the last 3 summers and will do so again. There's no excuse for managers to repeatedly blame a shit squad. Buy quality and you won't have one.
I think we've hired a manager who is good at identifying weaknesses in the squad and players to fill them but who is known for preferring veterans to young players and who is also known for sometimes falling out with talented players rather than making it work with them.
And that's what this summer should look like. It seems established that Mourinho has said he wants 3-5 signings at positions he thinks we need to address. We can be pretty sure that includes a CM, at least one attacker (9 and/or a winger, tougher to say, especially with Zlatan maybe coming back and no clear indication if Griezmann was supposed to fill one of those roles after Woodward said that one was going down or was being signed to be our 10 and have us play more 4-2-3-1) and then presumably an LB and/or an LCB.
So while I would love for us to acknowledge we have a long way to go and sign only younger but proven players as we build for the next few years, with Costa as the oldest signing (26) along with Fabinho (23), Lindelof (22) and some other players in his age-range like Morata (24), Lukaku (24) or Belotti (23), I have my doubts, and fear we will see a massive spend on someone like Perisic since Mourinho cares much more about 2017 than 2019.
Could his decline in form be because of the shift to a different wing? i've only really got a passing familiarity with him from youtube etc.
