Douglas Costa

Could his decline in form be because of the shift to a different wing? i've only really got a passing familiarity with him from youtube etc.
I don't think so, no. He had a great first 6 months at Bayern and then he got figured out. Then Anchelotti arrived and changed Bayern's setup, which made it worse.

At Shaktar I thought of him as Brazillian Ashley Young: good in patches & style is predictable. Had a great more than half a season for Bayern in his first season there, but then didn't show up in second season. He may be young but I do question whether he has the mentality to keep making progress. Let's not forget Brazillian for most part doesn't enjoy long career. There is a chance he doesn't have much motivation left despite his age.

Better, younger and cheaper than Perisic...

Also much more inconsistent, unreliable and coming off the back of a worse season than Perisic. Costa at his best is better than Perisic, but it's just that, his best isn't very common. We already have enough hot and cold superstars.

He will be 27 in September and he isn't better than Perisic.

That's my point. He's supposed to be younger & may have longer left in tank, but people often forget about Brazillian. They tend have both sharp peak & sharp decline. Douglas Costa imo is sharper attacking wise at his best vs Perisic's best. The problem is with Costa as I compare to Ashley Young is his consistency. Perisic now he's developed having better all round game, while Douglas Costa is more narrow dimensional. Douglas Costa's current issue with Bayern sounds like all about money at a time his form doesn't warrant it, so I question his motivation. I personally see this as a riskier deal compare to Perisic

Yeah agree with what you said. It's more risky deal.

Douglas Costa is like having a beach boy Brazilian dude, the types that have long, hard and stretchy muscles that will rocket them around in the sand while you stand there with your pale belly wondering how any random guy can be 40 times better than you even though you've played football all your life!! His acceleration and aggressiveness is frightening to say the least. He's not looking especially bright but he's totally dedicated to football. Being able to speak directly to Mourinho in his own language is a huge help for these guys. I want him here at any cost. Start with a nice and appropriate bid of £25m to get Bayern warm.

Just make sure to do a really good medical this time so we don't happen to sign a player with prothesis (Hargreaves) or suffering from progeria (Schweiny)!!

Bayern wants 50 Mio. EUR - that is already communicated...

The world is filled with players who come off a bad season if they don't feel welcome / loved at the club. Costa hasn't felt at home and Bayern want to fill up the squad with German players. Doesn't mean the guy has no talent. The season before he was a star. And he played very well at Shakhtar. We have been tracking him since the Fergie days, worth a punt.

Mourinho likes players with hunger and character. Costa has the talent but i dont think he has the right attitude to play for Mourinho. That being said, we are seriously short on the RW and a signing is definitely required.

I would have thought a left winger makes more sense, given our current personnel. We have no natural width on that side (Darmian/Blind play conservatively) and Pogba would thrive in the space an out-and-out left winger would open up in the opposition's left channel. Hence the Perisic links.

I feel with Shaw, Young and Darmain (whos better and more attack minded on the left) as full backs we are ok. While, Martial, Rashford arent Left wingers they do play that position well enough.

On the other hand our right wing is seriously short on options. Barring Valencia there are no pacy players that can occupy that space.

Mata is too slow, Mikhitaryan is not a RW even though he can start in that position and drift in-field (which is basically not very different from what mata would offer playing in that position i.e. a false winger). Rashford and Martial dont look comfortable on the right. I think we definitely need a RW more than we need a LW, a player that does well in iso situations and works hard on defense as well (easier said than done).

Bayern can suck a fat kielbasa - he's not fetching more than 35 mm Euros.

Bayern want to buy the likes of Goretzka for 17 million Euros and sell Costa for 50mm.

As much as I know Bayern does not want Goretzka this season. Sanches still will be there and getting another chance - and there is Tolisso, Vidal, Thiago and Rudy. For 2.x spots. For all I know about this two players Tolisso and Goretzka seem to be very similar.

And the transfer market just begins. There is so many interest on the market and you do not have to sell for the first bid.

Fair enough

What makes you think we want to buy Goretzka for 17 million Euros? That would be madness.

We want him for free.

Well, I have serious doubts Mkhitaryan has what it takes as #10 in packed Premier League midfields. He's performance in Europa was much better, in part because of that. The fact that Perišić plays for Inter on the left doesn't mean he couldn't be used on our right, like a even worse wrongfooted Di María did at Real Madrid.

Theres so many holes in that argument that i dont know where to begin. cant wait for us to not sign perisic so that everyone can stop putting him in their imaginary formations and pretending like hes going to solve all our problems. this is the douglas costa thread so lets just let it be.

Reports that Juventus are close to signing Douglas Costa on a €10 mill loan with option to buy for €30 mill next summer
My 35 mm Euro guess was pretty spot on...

I think he looks great for Juventus, he was available at very cheap (31m). Why we didn't bid is beyond me.

He's always great when i see him playing. No idea why we were not after him. Or why Bayern let him go.

Because he wasn't very suited for our style of play. He is blazing fast, so in a team relying more on counter attacking, he will probably be a great player. But we - especially under Pep - relied almost completely on ball possession and every opponent just parked the bus.
In these situations Costa showed more than enough that he lacks in decision making, precision regardings his passes and crosses and general 'footballing intelligence'.

I don't miss him a single bit, he is sometimes very good, but most of the time pretty frustrating player, at least for ball possession teams against 'park the bus' teams.

Costa's been quite impressive for Juve when he's played. He's still not a certain starter when everyone's fit but in counter attacking games, his pace and dribbling can be invaluable. Like Salah he would thrive in the Premier League's open game.

Yeah i think so too, i wonder why Klopp didn't go for him.

Im not sure about him. I love wingers, theyre to me the most fun players to watch but he lacks that something, most probably end product or something. Its like there are a certain type of winger which are blazing fast but they never are able of getting a first xi spot for their own. Theyre always another option and thats it (the lennons, the walcotts, etc. I think douglas is a bit better but i dont know if he can be reliable at the very high end of world football)

He's a bit like Martial, has periods where he's invisible but then has those bursts of quality a few times a game. At 27 he still needs to improve his decision making but let's hope Martial is a better player by the time he's that age.

And I was pretty surprised when I read about Juve actually paying 46m for him.

When it comes to the Euro amount Bayern basically replaced Costa with James. Who is younger. And better suited for their game. And better. Superb deal from Bayern.

This. Some posters only see his good things.

If United were going to spend that on one of the two, Douglas Costa would be the one I'd go for, based on their position, ability etc. Horses for courses.
As someone who probably saw all of Costa‘s games for Bayern: No. Just no.
He plays like a headless chicken. While he is (often) awesome in beating his man, his decision making (and crossing) is horrendous very often.

This is true. It looked good at first, but he never attained a constant high level in these areas.

He's the only player that looks like he has the potential to unlock Spurs atm.
