Douglas Costa

My best friend has his jersey, and his favorite team was Bayern because he was his favorite player .

Long story short , He passed away April 27th, but I texted him literally the day before saying if costa came to man utd would you become a man utd fan and he told me yes...

So yeah, that's my story.. hope he comes on over to old trafford

We are crying out for a guy like him. Hopefully our scouts have him on the radar.

No he plays mostly on the left (which i don't really understand to be honest) but with Ancelotti our wingers don't play as wide as under Pep.
I think it's pretty easy to understand, he works way better on the left than on the right.

Peps real formation in attack:
------------------Lewy--Müller-------------------
Winger------------------------------------Winger
---------Fullback--CM--CM--Fullback-----------
--------------------CB--CB-----------------------

Under Ancelotti its more like:
----------Winger----Lewy----Winger----------------
Fullback----------CM---CM------------------Fullback
----------------------DM------------------------------
--------------------CB---CB---------------------------

Due to this Costa (but also Coman) played significantly worse this season, because under Pep they always faced 1 vs. 1 situations where they could just use their speed to run past opponents. Costa isn't really suited for this role, a player like Sanchez would be nearly perfect.

From what i've seen of you this season, i don't think that he would fit perfectly to you. Additionally i'm not sure if a player with his mentality would be Mourinhos best friend.
The Juve rumor makes sense...he could be an immense left wingback, bascially a Cuadrado for the left side.

Thanks for the detailed reply. It's nice to see someone put some effort in. :)

Thanks for this. The way I see it, under Ancelotti - he hasn't flourished because of tactics. Mou sets up his team to transition quickly and someone like Costa would be tremendous at that (not just width). We are hopeless in wide positions and have nobody with a decent attacking threat.

Under Pep who depends on Wingers to provide width - makes sense; Under Ancelotti with tucked-in wingers? he should be on the right where he can use his stronger foot to cut-in - that's why Messi plays on the right wing.

My commisserations, hope you can keep strong!

People here are making it seem like Costa is a Valencia type of winger which isn't true. He is originally a right winger, who is great at dribbling and creating unbalances in the defense. His shot can improve, but I think Mou would play him in the right.

It is not just the tactics and the differences between Pep and Ancelotti. He is just not as good as Robben in cutting in from the right as he is more the "Hollywood" shooter (and the Robben of today is very good interchanging passes with others, too - not the individualist the way he was 5 or 6 years ago). He shoots a lot but does not have the precision and not the eye for the pass - and from the right he cannot put in crosses. But that just is half of it.

Costa has been world class his first two/three months at Bayern - but maybe that was as he was still the new one and he still had the form from not having a real summer break (whereas the rest was still building up form for the season) - but already after that his performances started to get worse.

He had 2 goals and 11 assists in his first 12 matches in August and September
3 goals and 3 assists in the next 8 matches in October and November
and 2 goals and 3 assists in the 23 matches after that...

He is not good enough in shooting and in his dribbling to be really the great individualist - but lacks match intelligence and the eye for others to be really useful - and does a lot wrong decisions. A lot of the crosses he made in the first 2 months weren't placed but just shot very hard blindly in the box and just somehow got into the box.

And we Bayern fans are made as Ancelotti still gives him match time when others like Coman do not look as "uninterested" on the pitch as he does.

I remember when we were linked with him years ago and all we could see were very very impressive youtube videos. The few times I saw him for Shaktar in the champions league he looked very talented but greedy and poor in his decision making. Last year for Bayern they looke dbrilliant with him on one side and Koman on the other, seemed to be turning into the player his youtube videos suggested. Have to confess I have barely watched Bayern this year and when I have he doesnt seem to be starting. Reading the comment of German fans on this thread doesnt look like he is showing the consistency we desperately need. If I could sign one Bayern player (other than Neur) it would be Kimmich, seen him play at full back and central midfield where he would be the perfect Carrick replacement. Sadly he looks like the perfect Lahm replacement

Over hyped by people on here. We would sign him and he would turn out not to meet the expectations. Much like Micky T this year.

Micky hasn't looked bad, he looks classy player just not 100% settled. For his first season 10 goals is fine, only 5 assists is underwhelming though expected that to be in double didgets. Think it will click for Micky next year with a year if BPL under his belt

It should be worrying that Bayern are willing to get rid of him already. And the Bayern fans here do not seem fussed about him possibly leaving.

This is and James Rodriguez threads are hilarious. We have Jesse Lingard on the wing but apparently Costa and Rodriquez aren't good enough for our team of elite players.

I'd take him, but after his hot start with Pep, he's fallen off badly.

Can't deny it's not a concern.

It's very much possible for a player to be better than Lingard and still be a bad signing.

Wouldn't mind a punt if he's cheap. Can't see it though, he won't be that cheap and Mourinho doesn't strike me as all that punty

Both aren't the youngest though. And I am sure, Munich were hoping that Costa could replace one of them.
Robben nor Ribery for that matter aren't really slowing down though, still super players. They signed him 2 seasons ago aged 23/24 in thought Robben/Ribery's performances will drop but they haven't. So they are left with a player who is good enough to start for them but has better players ahead of him, who has grown unhappy at lack of game time and wants out. Wherever he goes I have this gut feeling he will do well

The price being quoted is £21m, for that price we can do a lot worse. I am sure he's better than an unconfident Martial atleast.

Yeah I'd classify £21 million as punt-worthy. We've got nothing on the wings at the moment. At least he's an actual winger!

Barely watched him this season.
The poster above makes a great point.
Pep's system has a way of getting the best out of wingers because they play so high up the pitch without any defensive responsibility.
His role for us would be similar to what it is under Ancelotti.
It's just that we don't have a single direct wide man. Every single player we have would rather pass that take on his man. It's so frustrating.

So why don't we sign all those players better than a Martial without confidence and end up with very average players?

Douglas Costa is average and i hope we stay clear of him. Most of the people who want him hardly even watch him play or have only seen him in few matches where he skins some player and looks exciting. He does so much while producing so little (especially in goals and assists).

Funny how people are claiming now he's a genuine winger or wide man but would probably end up saying he's better though the middle after we sign him and he fails to deliver what they expect on the wings. We have enough squad players in the forward positions and we need real/proven quality IMO.

Personally I feel the best of Mikhi is still to come, he's had a very disrupted season. Also it's not a great comparison; Mikhi was hyped for good reason, his stats from 2015/16 were as good as any attacking midfielder in the world.

If we want a 'genuine wide man', I'd much, much prefer Willian. And I don't like Willian at all either.
