Douglas Costa

By all accounts we've had a file with his name on it somewhere at Carrington, and have done for a few years. I doubt we've ever stopped monitoring his progress.

He has a scary resemblance to Valencia really. They look pretty much identical, although Douglas Costa seems to show more emotion when he scores (Valencia has improved with that though).

Could you spoiler those? Goes ridiculously slowly on an ipad if you have 3 gifs trying to open at once, and then for every time somebody will quote that.

He really hasn't impressed too much at Shakhtar, although he's generally been pretty good. Ukrainian league commentators have called him selfish at times. I don't think that he's nearly as influential for Shakhtar as Willian was, for example.

Look at the difference between Shakthar this season in the CL and the last. The differences are Fernandinho, Willian and Mkhitaryan are not there anymore. They left a big gap and Shakhtar sensibly filled it with young Brazilian talent.

Yeah they're probably not as solid or even strong anymore but they have some good potential and should improve.

Really baffling why none of the bigger clubs have been in for him yet. Assuming it may happen this summer. He'd be an ideal replacement for Lewandowski.

No he wouldn't. He's a typical winger/attacking midfielder, and is about 5'6 too. Lewandowski is your traditional 9.

Linked with Liverpool and Spurs at the moment. Think he'd be a good signing for someone. There's definitely a lot of talent there, would have loved to have seen what we did with him if we brought him in when we were interested.

Probably on the wing, or convert him to a CM. 6m euros was a real bargain, could probably sell him for four or five times that much

That Alex Teixeira looks good too. Made a couple really nice runs, but like his entire team, couldn't finish. Taison was probably the most wasteful, Adriano wasn't much better. Also interesting to see (another player United were linked too) Bernard near the end, though I didn't notice him that much

Alex Texeira is the best of the lot. I don't think Taison is quite used to the CL yet.

Spurs will be linked with a player like Costa for the same reason that Amazon will link you to razors and clippers and all that junk just because you bought a 100-pack of razor blades.

Bernard didn't do much, but he has huge potential. Of all the players who were still plying their trade in Brasil in 2013 (moved to Europe in August that year), he had the biggest buzz around him by far. I rate him as Brasil's biggest forward talent after Neymar. I still can't decide whether the move to Europe was too early, though, & whether Shakhtar was the right place or not. Huge ceiling though, that's for sure. If he keeps his head down and works at it, he could be a star.

Well yeah, any ceiling is going to look huge to him... he's sodding tiny.

Texeira looked really good, my only issue with him is that when the commentator said his name it sounded like he was saying '...to Shearer'

He and 5 team mates (4 Brazilian and 1 Argentinian) have refused to travel back to the Ukraine after a friendly in France citing (quite reasonably) safety concerns. After what the club president has said in response, I'd be looking to leave asap if I were them.

I always thought Costa would be a good buy for us.

It's crazy that they could be forced to stay, no one should play football in that area next year - mad that Shakhtar could well play in the CL next season.

I don't think anyone can force them to stay in Donetsk........They can stay in France until Shakhtar are forced to sell them.

He scored 4 league goals and had 9 assists in the league last year in the Ukraine...he always seems to excite when he played in the champions league....would be a definite improvement on our current wingers but maybe I'd prefer Greizmann or Depay or someone like that with perhaps bigger potential before going for D.Costa

It's only when the driest of dry spells of news sets in that this guys thread gets bumped.

I bet a newspaper links us within 24 hours now that it has been.

We were linked years ago and now might be our chance. Surely he wouldn't turn down a big pay day to stay and play Champions League in a war zone.

Milan want him but are waiting till later on in the window to go for him so they can try get him cheaper apparently.

I'd take Srna and Bernard. Bernard has massive potential, he tore the Brazilian League up and was close to a move to Dortmund. Hasn't excelled at Shakhtar according to sources but he's a big talent, obviously his height may be a problem but if we do revert to 4-3-3, he would be ideal for one of those wing positions.

Srna would be perfect for a WB position. It's his most natural position, he can defend as well as attack and shouldn't cost too much. I think he's approaching his 30s which may be a problem in terms of settling in and resale value.
